I was lucky enough, ten years ago, to capture a live rendition of this song on the radio. I don't know where was it performed, but it brings tears to my eyes. It's so powerful... much better than this studio version. |

I love the sudden jump in the course of events when he inverts the colours of eyes and hair. Brilliant, gives an unexpected and perfect portrait of the now revealed killer. The "pretty mouth underneath all the foaming" is a powerful image. This Cave guy is a master at what he does. |

It seems to me a relationship of two people who want each other, but in which the author gets disgruntled by the ignorance/lack of intellect on the partner's side, and finally decides to kill her in a most gory manner ("Incoming!" makes me think of the blade approaching quickly to my face).

I once read in an interview that Eldritch had said that the "she looked good in ribbons" line meant actually "cut to ribbons". So there's another path for song interpretation. |
