this song for some reason just sticks with me alot lol. so i thought i'd share my interpretation of this song... it starts in a living room, a man in a chair drinking a beer or whatever, sitting staring at nothing and speaking to a sniffling adolescent male. and in a emotionless and slightly evil tone he begins telling the boy his life story... "all my life i've never wanted kids. so far as to make my women get abortions. i've stuck my dick in everything from strippers to cowgirls. and i swear if you start crying i'll tear your eyes out. now then your mother was a whore, and if you say anything i'll kill your family too. i'm a piece of shit and i know it. and i want to kill myself, but i stick through it." "you'll get yours" the boy mumbles under his breath and the man hears it. " you hear your mother anywhere? i drowned her and stuck her in the corner and you're not going to do shit about it. so fuck off and listen to your music or go watch some action movie and wish you were as tough as them." *switch to fresh orphaned child a few years later* he sits writing music to have a place to pour out his emotions instead of bottling them, then one day he writes a song fantasizing about killing the man that killed his mother. all the evil thing he would do with the corpse to defile it. he keeps remembering that one day the murderous man's day will come and it will be him to exact revenge. one day he finally breaks and kills the man, but during that he's panicking looking for a way to hide the body; bury it, grind it up and flush it, nothing, and he starts thinking people have known what he's done. so int he end he finally decides to cut the body up, pack it in a satchel or suitcase and burn it. mike patton is a fucking genius. |

from a literal standpoint i'm gonna say this song is about a soldier, official, "gunslinger", mebe even an assassin of sorts. "He’s a stranger to some And a vision to none He can never get enough, Get enough for the one" here to me it seems as if jared is talking about how this character is rarely seen. he's always gone, taking care of some sort of duty. yet he still somehow still funds his family. "For a fortune he'd quit But it’s hard to admit How it ends and begins On his face is a map of the world A map of the world" in this part ima have to continue the story saying how he would give up this life for a fortune, enough to keep his family fed, in clothes and sheltered "But it’s hard to admit / How it ends and begins" and in this one line it gives me the idea that he couldnt see himself quitting for real because all it's come to is war and that's all he knows. "On his face is a map of the world" this could be a refrence to scars, wrinkles, being rough, etc. moreso medals or marks from where he's been and fought. "From yesterday, it’s coming From yesterday, the fear From yesterday, it calls him But he doesn't want to read the message here" every day e recalls the previous days, their encounters, their feelings. and it kind of comforts him. he knows he should give this up but he finds fulfilling his duty to be more important than his family. he is in essence like all humans and afraid of dramatic change to his daily life. "On a mountain he sits, not of gold but of shit through the blood he can look see the lives that he took From a count to the one He'll decide when he’s done with the innocent" and here seems to be the mosy cryptic of passages. to me it looks like from all he's been taught philisophicly he may have a great ammount of wealth BUT its worthless without that which really matters. the second half of wich are his current thoughts, he kills, he understands what he does, yet he doesnt know weither to stay at this or go home, so he tells himself "i'll think about it when i'm done here. this requires my attention." then through the last part of the song i get the idea that he is torn between his family and his profession. he's a fraid to feel useless, but he wants his family as well. all in all i think i'm trying to say the song is about longing... be it for family, friends, home, and yet not wanting to sacrifice what you've grown accustomed to. inrelation to the writer it could mean that as a musician he's been all over the place and he's tired and wants to be with his family, but yet he loves what he does and continues, knowing he should be at home. |
