| The Flaming Lips – The Sound of Failure/It's Dark... Is It Always This Dark?? Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| It's someone who's fighting to be living even though they know it's a meaningless struggle, because they're going to die soon [of something - illness]... and finally, they're just too tired, and so they stop fighting and listen to "the sound of failure". And they accept they yeah, some people need cheery happy smile-until-your-teeth-break music and people and things [Britney, Gwen], but she's tried of that, it isn't helping her, because she doesn't know the point of living anymore, and if there is or isn't a difference in dying, and maybe dying would be the best thing for her. It's okay to fail. | |
| The Flaming Lips – Suddenly Everything Has Changed Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| It's like when you're doing something, and suddenly, you realize... Something isn't there anymore, or somethis new is there. Suddenly, you realize, one day, you're gonna die, just like everyone else. | |

The lyrics are off. "Touch me on the inside with a finger full of gravy, wanna get you on the sofa, lady, wanna shake and bake me" "Bottle full of pain with a hog's head screaming With a scumbag soul and a body always screaming" "...violin cryin'..." "Hail to the dawning of the plentiful sensation 'Cause the town is full of sound and I killed my last relation" Sounds a lot like drugs, if you ask me, but my view's skewed. But ex-girlfriend makes a lot of sense. |

| The start's so bizarre... And I hear the song is actually sung by a hobo that Beck talked to some. Poor hobo? | |

| It's just bonus noise at the end. I hear it has a name... I forget what, though. | |

"garbage CLASSES"... It's not vomiting morons. It was originally called "Minus (Karaoke Bloodperm)" Or maybe just "Karaoke Bloodperm". And that name's a thinker. Free association? Stream of Consciousness? |

| Beck – Static (Version B) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I'd say it's about not letting just the same-old, same-old fill your mind. Break out of it, even if it seems that it would be worse to do it. You've not been alive for so long, and it doesn't seem possible, it doesn't seem good... But it's the best thing you could do for yourself. Don't fake it... This static is leaving you stranded in nowhere, but you're distracted by this nothingness and don't realize what you're missing. | |
| Beck – Sexx Laws Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I've heard that he used 'hepatitis contact lens' to refer to those weird contacts people wear... that change the color, shape of the eye. To quote whiskeyclone, who quoted Beck... 'They're those things that those industrial and goth people wear that turn your eyes yellow and white. I couldn't figure out what they were called officially so I just gave them a name. They make your eyes look kind of sick and demonic.' | |

I feel like... He doesn't want to break up with her, it hurts both of them too much, but they're killing each other... She doesn't get it, and is can't get over it. He doesn't want her to be left alone, and hurt herself, but she's terrified of people now, no matter how much she wants to be around them, and lashes out at anyone who comes to help her or watch her. The chorus laments how he can't fight for someone who doesn't understand why. All the people around her, instead of being supportive even as she lashes out, and instead gawk at her as if she's some sort of circus freak. They know everything about her, and her about them, but even so, no one moves to help her. The last, he talks about how due to all of their actions - his, hers, theirs - she's going to be somewhere frightening, painful. No one will stand up for her, no one will laugh with or at her... She will be completely alone. |

I see it as the opposite... It feels to me to be getting more optimistic as the song goes on. The first verse feels cold, tired - exhausted "Go to sleep now, we're so tired now"- someone defending another from the dark, and whatever is in it... Something unpleasant. It seems impossible - "Hang your hopes on the wind" ((The music video adds so much. They illustrate that beautifully, with a kite in the sky.)) A small spark of hope - A new day - comes, get out of what binds you. The chorus reassures whoever the narrator/singer is with, a child, someone younger, someone loved... Don't worry, we just go a bit farther, it's okay. The second verse feels much darker than the first, 'flying backwards', 'night', 'cold bones', 'black rope'. But the black rope is from a swing, something innocent (children playing on a swing), 'all our dreams are waking' could mean that they'll soon have everything they could need and want, if they get away. The bridge, 'can't stand on... explode' brings light, but in such a terrible way, with the 'satellites' - the stars and moon exploding, and they can't walk or move, perhaps to leave. The last verse, though, seems to finally bring hope - mixed with risk, of course. "Sailors run aground" - whoever keeps them chained, or perhaps just unfortunate bystanders have their wants diverted due to things far beyond their control - the sea change, but this misfortune brings fortune to narrator... 'In a stolen boat', pushed by 'strange waves', they 'float away' from whatever was the evil. The end repeats the reassurances, saying just a bit more, just hold on, we'll have everything we need and want once we're away from here, if we survive. Mine's a bit different... and it's probably due to how I first listened to it. I had put my songs into repeat for the night, so I'd hear all my music as I was sleeping... I sleep much better that way... And about 3 in the morning, I woke up, humming the song as I was listening to it. And that probably changed how I looked at it... But it does sound much more hopeful to me at the end rather than the beginning. |
