i'm not sure but here's my guess as to a meaning for this song - there's this girl he really likes, and thinks could like him too, but she keeps pulling away and making excuses not to be with him, telling him about his 'faults' and using them against him, for instance: "So I had a drink 'Cause it helped me think Now you say I've been drinking too much" Also, perhaps she's afraid of committment? Because of the chorus - it doesn't even sound like they're in a proper relationship and he's saying "We're not married yet!" However, we can also see that although he's saying slow down and stop worrying, that he's really serious about her cos he says "ain't your mister YET" - implying that he could be. But all he wants is a chance to get closer to her (the metaphor or "next to me" i think): "Wait a minute sister I know I ain't your mister yet Just give me a chance and see But you won't even get next to me" Perhaps he thinks that the girl's attitudes and actions are a facade and not the real her, cos he says: "Put away your old disguise" Which is why he's taking so much effort to try and get her to spend time with him, cos he can see how wonderful she is inside. |

As far as I can see there's actually no real reason for it being a guy rather than a girl making him dance with him, I think it's just incidental. | |

Presumably he really likes this other girl, and it's a really physical desire ("I want you like I'm eighteen" and "In another life I'd be drenched in sweat with you"), but he's already with someone else ("I'm tied to my baby"). So they have to "get over it" as in their desires, because "it's this life darlin', and in this life we make do" - you can't always have what you want in this life. Really like this song - very catchy like you say! |

starydancer is right, but the reason I love this song is cos I think it can be applied to whatever makes you feel like that in your own life. For me it would be dancing as well, but for others it could be any number of different things. And also it seems to fit with what I think falling in love is like. That confusion of emotions, feeling everything at once, and something trying to burst out of you. |

ahh awesome, that makes a lot more sense than all the rubbish i was coming up with! and yeah that's a good point about the religious connotations - "now i'm filled to the top with fear but it's all just a bunch of matter" - it's nothing more than just matter if god's not there to give life a meaning. ("now i'm looking for a reason why you even set my world into motion" i thought of it 1st as romantic but it's got some potentially pretty deep stuff in here. |

Maybe it should be "If there's a reason I'll WRITE always"??? Otherwise, I think this song is pretty simple to understand! Guy really likes this girl, wants her to "stay the night" so to speak, and thinks maybe she's just tentative and actually likes him too ("I can't decide if you're giving me a sign, well maybe you are just like this all the time") but asks her to "Take a chance". Love it. |

Since nobody else has posted, I'll try to start it off! But this is all just from my head, and I may get it totally wrong! I think what she's saying in all the bits like "Then you'd say all of the right things without a clue But you'd save the best for last Like I'm the one for you" is that she wants him to say he's in love with her and all that - she wants real, stong feelings from him. BUT, she knows he's a player, and that actually it'll never last. Therefore her emotions and feelings for him keep switching from wanting him to be serious about it and feeling like she really loves him, to knowing that he's a player, and then trying to be strong and saying that he doesn't mean that much to her either. Hence the bit that goes "You should know that you're just a temporary fix This is not rooted with you it don't mean that much to me You're just a filler in the space that happened to be free How dare you think you'd get away with trying to play me" - she knows the truth really and is trying to be strong, and make herself believe he doesn't mean that much to her. She knows that the truth is that he's a player and that he's not that serious, but still she always comes back to the fact that she WANTS it to be real, and that her hope keeps her illusions of love going - "But, despite the truth that I know I find it hard to let go and give up on you Seems I love the things you do Like the meaner you treat me the more eager I am To persist with this heartbreak and running around And I think that I know things may never change I'm still hoping one day I might hear you say I make you feel a way you've never felt before ............." I think the reason I think it's about this is becasue I'm in that situation right now - being with someone who you know is just having fun and isn't feeling anything strong and serious for you, but you want it to be more, but really deep down you know the truth and try to make yourself think like they are and not being so serious. However, I could be completely wrong?! I hope when Adele's album comes out next year she becomes really successful cos I think her songs are amazing :) |

I can't believe only one person's commented on this song!!! I love Gavin DeGraw and think this is one of the best songs on the album. I think it's about a guy who used to just go out and have fun - "I’ve had days Of wine and women and wine" But he's realised now that he's with this amazing girl (or could be with this amazing girl?) that was all a waste of time because this feeling is so much better. I think he either isn't going out with her and is just fantasising about it, or has only just started dating/getting to know her - it sounds quite like a new love, and is saying he WANTS to get lost with her, not that he has got lost and liked it!! Basically it's about how much he likes a girl. And like Jess says, it's really sweet. (I also love how the title, before you listen to it, makes you think it'll be an angry song with him telling someone to "get lost" but in fact it's entirely different.) |

I think this song is about girl who likes this guy and can't stop thinking about him - she daydreams about what it would be like to be with him and it's like she has a burning desire. But she's just "curious" and doesn't want anything to actually happen... yet. She's happy just thinking about it, although it ends with her still thinking about him: And I hope you're satisfied Because I'm satisfied Just bein' curious I can't get you off my mind - is she REALLY satisfied??? Also does this mean she has a boyfriend already, or is she talking about the guy she can't get off her mind as her man? "Does my man understand Everything that I am" If she had another man that would explain the bit about how how "the time is not right" and why although she says she's happy just being curious, it then ends "I can't get you off my mind". Before I heard the end of the song I thought she was writing in a suicide note, although obviously she's not considering the ending! What xrach1807x said is pretty much it I think... not sure about diary or song though, I would say her diary. Maybe the person she found is him (as in the writer of the song) and so she tells him about how she felt and all the stuff she wrote (in her diary or whatever), and so he wrote a song about her? Or maybe I'm trying to make it too complicated! |

To me it's simply: This guy has done bad things to his girlfriend (cheating on her for example, possibly more than once?) and he feels really guilty because she doesn't know. "Something I've been keeping locked away behind my lips..." And also "And even though you are next to me I still feel so alone" - alone because he can't tell her, or presumably anyone else. He feels so bad and knows he's done wrong and that she'd be devestated if she found out, so hence the "I don't know if I should stay or turn around and run" - he wants to stay but he feels so guilty he knows it'd be easier just to run and take the easy way out. The chorus I think is pretty amazing - the fact that her breathing - something so quiet and everyday - is keeping him awake. Shows the enormity of what he knows he has done. Also, just as a side point, I LOVE the tune and the vilolin in the song - awesome. |

Wow. I agree, BeachBabe182 makes a lot of sense! I really like that interpretation, although I don't think he's judging her or angry or anything when he says "slide between the sheets of all the beds you never knew" - I think he just accepts it. Also I agree with bigfatgut - I love that the song is so upbeat - it sounds weird but listening to it really cheers me up. Even when you know the meaning, and it's so sad, you can still appreciate it as an almost happy song because he's so okay with it all - it's her family that's so upset about it and yet he's still there saying "I'll have you - I still love you and I think you're beautiful." Possibly the best Goo Goo Dolls song. Amazing. |
