The Stills – Gender Bombs Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think this song is in any way critical of women... but more a song about having to get over a crush, and the bitterness of having to surrender beloved romanticism which is all to often wrapped in gender. Having to realise that even though romantic images are compelling, and even though impulses are strong it still doesn't change that whatever happened at the sunday evening [with "her"] was nothing more than an innuendo... IS the logic that will break your heart, the logic which you learn, and your unrequited crushes school you in it. The stills lyrics are so dark and about such basic loss. and amazing

I'm with tania,

plus i love how rebelious she gets... she's celebrating that she CAN record this no matter if she didn't get major label backing in the beginning.

I think it's a response to xenephobia to her lyrics... i didn't know about the american reaction to her, but that makes sense.. anything foreign is terrorist.

"The village got on the phone
said the street is comin’ to town"

That's what she sees her message as, i reckon, the third world bringing their authority to the first world. The last lines have got a real sting to them

"bird flu gonna get you
made it in my stable
from the crap you drop
on my crop when they pay you."

all that hype and paranoia about birdflu last year coming from all these far away places really shook some governments up. She's like saying that if it was manufactured, they almost had it coming, and it'd be made of the pollution suffered by third-world countries.

Her music is like that, their ignorance and neglect of foreignness that they like to call terrorist, is coming back to get them.

(Deforestation and dumping due to industry for FIRSTworld consumer products has the brunt of it's impact on the THIRDworld which creates it. )

To me it's a bit more satyrical...

Kind of imitating the ignorance of people who may think prostitution is simply a case of playfully going to the shop and not having enough... sucking on a lollipop to get what you want.

It's just that cute kitschy image of a Lolita-like (maybe a japanese street fashion reference too) girl, that really really is bull shit when it comes to prostitution, women are forced into it by poverty, and suppression, beaten into it.

Whereas people are still prepared to think of prostitutes as "man eaters". I thought of it as a punchline, sarcasm. Women suppressed by MEN, being called man-eaters, it's just obscene, but people still buy it. I'm just very glad that someone like her is still prepared to inflate that thought, she knows it's the world turned on it's head.

So yeah people are saying they're getting a less positive view of the character in the song as opposed to a prostitute. But basically that's how a lot of people SEE prostitutes.

LCD Soundsystem – Losing My Edge Lyrics 19 years ago
no man i think you have a point...It's more subtle than a direct piss-take that line is very important

"they're actually really, really nice"

It does explore the absurdity of it of trying to know music that no-one else knows. But eventually it will out run you, but it doesn't matter. He's not bitter about losing his edge, he just is.

And it's like he goes through all the things he knows owns and has done, and the fact that even he has lost his edge... means that if that's where you place your importance, you're as out-of-touch as him, because there are not very many people who can claim all the above.

"You don't know what you really want."

People say they want some sort of musical perfection, they seek out something that no-one else has heard of, they want to be in the centre of the next big thing. But even if they had, it still wouldn't complete them.

It's so brave for a musician to actually discount the kind of people that they attract... there's lots of elitist people that stumble onto lcd soundsystem, it's their fanbase who were the type of people to talk about this "lcd system" band that no-one has heard of, they'll say "I was there" but with a pinch of salt and a tongue in cheek.

LCD Soundsystem – Too Much Love Lyrics 19 years ago
IT seems to me about love being futile in a relationship, and it having to break down. And that too much is invested in it, and we use too much love to try and make things work when maybe they shouldn't.

The thing is every line of this song needs a translation. That's just a summary for now^

Grandaddy – The Final Push to the Sum Lyrics 19 years ago
I thought it was about old age, and waiting to die, thinking "what have i become" and the pace of youth just flashes by with impossible speed which he can't grasp. The new faces, strange places being hospices and hospitals and the unfamiliar locations that just meld into a blur as he fades from conciousness, as the music fades "what have i become".
