| The Dresden Dolls – Coin-Operated Boy Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Wow... Okay, a lot of people I notice are saying it's about a sex toy... Which is impplicated in the song, but I don't interpret it that way... I feel I can connect to the song, never having my love returned to me from someone who I deeply cared for... Anyways... This is how I interpret it. The girl wants a "coin-operated boy", which could stand for a boyfriend who loves her but she doesn't really love him, but she can pull him along and have just for the sake of not being lonely. And she can wrap her arms around him and pretend that he is her true love. "All the other real ones that I destroy Cannot hold a candle to my new boy and I'll Never let him go and I'll never be alone" She says that she'll keep her boy because with him she won't ever be lonely, which is a lot more than could be said with all her previous relationships. The part in the middle ("This bridge was written...") I think is her saying to another guy who she has feelings for, wondering if he would be willing to persist and earn her love even after she bets him that she'd never love him, and if he would keep trying to prove that she's "dying" (she's becoming dependant on her boy so she won't be lonely but is dying inside because she wants someone that she can love, too). "I want you, I want you, I want you, I want you..." As she says this, her voice is growing more intense, like she's making a choice of the new guy over her boy, finally deciding what she really wanted (risking giving her love to someone and be rejected instead of living loveless but never alone)... But then at the peak of this, it slowly changes to "I want a, I want a, I want a... I... want... a..." She changes her mind and decides to stick with her boy after all. She says he feels like a normal boy should feel, meaning he's just like any other guy, so what's the problem? "With his pretty coin operated voice Saying that he loves me and he's thinking of me Straight and to the point, that is why I want A coin operated boy" She likes hearing him say in his pretty automatic voice that he loves her and he's thinking of her, straight and to the point. She never hears just that from any other guy, and her boy just says it so automatically... Overall I think she's just saying that she'd rather be with someone she doesn't love and be happy because she's not lonely... instead of giving someone her true love and having it rejected time after time. >_> I want a coin operated boy now.... So, that's just the meaning I got from it... if you think differently, then you're entitled to your own opinion... If it doesn't flat out say a certain thing, then it is open to many possible interpretations... |
