| José González – Heartbeats Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| I think it might be about how it's not enough just to pray; we also have to live. Our lives are just a moment ("one night" or "ten days") wherein we make promises, fall in love, make mistakes, and discover and experience things much bigger than ourselves. Our moments touch each other's. Part of being human is going out there and doing stuff, even if we fail and screw it all up and have to start over. It doesn't mean we have to be stupid about it ("you knew the hand of the devil..." that whole section seems to be about how paying attention and a certain measure of carefulness can save your life), but we have "divine sense" - God-given brains. We've been blessed with the ability to think, so we don't have to ask God how to tie our shoes every day. So we shouldn't settle for the kind of life where we're afraid to do anything so all we do is sit in our rooms and pray and never experience anything. It's not good enough. I mean, there's a time for that, but we also have to go out and live. | |
| Regina Spektor – Laughing With Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| I think there are a few layers to this song, and most have been touched on, but there is one that hasn't. I feel like she's not talking about being funny as in laugh-out-loud funny, but funny as in "hmm..." When God is presented like a wish-granting vending machine, or a pissed-off dictator who hates everyone, or someone who will make you rich if you pray some prayer, that should make us scratch our heads and maybe even laugh a little. Something is off there. Something is funny there, not right. I feel like "we're laughing with God" in that context, then, means that some folks cheapen God with their view of him, and it's laughable how inaccurate it is. So much so that even God has to laugh, and perhaps those who laugh "at God" - the atheist who doesn't believe in a magical man in the sky, the person walking down the street who hears the man yelling through a bullhorn on the streetcorner and thinks, "Ugh, that's not a God I want to follow," and the wounded ex-Christian who was burned by a pastor telling her God was going to send her to hell for loving other women - these views of God *should* be laughed at. They should be approached with frivolity, and ultimately rejected. Because they cheapen who God really is, and maybe God is laughing at those views of himself, too. Just some thoughts. | |
| Avril Lavigne – Things I'll Never Say Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Ok, so I'm famous for mis-hearing lyrics to songs (my favorite was the time I thought the song went "I can see clearly now, the rain has gone...I can see all the popsicles in my way..." lol) So the first million times I heard THIS song, I thought it was really inappropriate, haha. In this line: "I want to blow you...away" The "away" came a little late, haha. And I swear to Bob I didn't think she was saying "I want to see you go down on one knee," but rather, "I want to see you go down..." Um. Well, you get it. Haha. | |
| Snow – Informer Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Bwahaha, dude, all that was blatant satire. :) | |
| Devendra Banhart – Long Haired Child Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| katie bird: Wrong. Everything Devendra writes means something, most everything means multiple somethings in fact; he uses tons of subtext. Theories abound as to how; some say it's drug-induced, some say he's just crazy deep, or it could be both. :) | |
| Hurricane Chris – A Bay Bay Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Uggggh, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thinks this song is absolutely annoying. And pointless. | |
| Kimya Dawson – Stink Mama Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| To be honest, I have no freaking idea what this song means. But I'm so curious, actually. Any ideas??? | |
| Snow – Informer Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| If we read between the lines and work to find the *deeper* (giggle) meaning behind Mr. Snow's lyrics, we can see that he is a deep and tortured soul who is speaking about his personal experience of being turned over to the police by someone. In the chorus, he says, "Informer you no say daddy me Snow me or I'll go blam, I'll lick you, boom-boom, damn. Detective mon said daddy me Snow me stab someone down the lane, I'll lick you, boom-boom, damn." Translated into English, this essentially means, "You who have informed the police, if you indeed gave the law enforcement my name, I will kill you with a gun. A man who is a detective said that I stabbed someone down the street, and I will kill you with a gun." But that's not as catchy. :*) | |
| Bethany Dillon – For My Love Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Guys...I think it's about God. There's an analogy that's frequently used in the Bible to describe the church's relationship to Jesus...a marriage. Bethany frequently makes reference to that theme in her music (it's beautiful and really amazing)...she says things like, "All I've ever wanted, and what men have given their lives for, is a God who understand my weaknesses, a God that I can love," and "If only you could see how heaven stills when you speak..." and both of those were talking about God (or from his point of view, in the case of the latter one), not a boy. What I think is that this song has two sides, a double meaning. I think it could relate to either a relationship with God or another human. I just think it is neat to look at something in a new light sometimes. |

| Devendra Banhart – A Ribbon Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I was always enthralled and confused by this song. I love it - it's amazing for when I can't fall asleep; it's pure lullaby. But the last part confuses me: "ribbons around the fumes/we'll be sleeping soon" - I could never figure out what that part meant. This is going to sound really strange, but this song makes me feel really attracted to him. I think it's just the intimacy of the whole thing, it feels like he's singing just to you - it's an expression of respect, he's asking permission for everything before he does it, and that's really gentlemanly...it's just a cool song. :*) I love hippies. |

| Caedmon's Call – Bus Driver Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I love it when he says "We're all just bus drivers, and it's time to go home..." I think that is talking about being humble: from janitor to brain surgeon to bus driver, our careers don't elevate us above or depress us below anyone else in this world, not in light of the truth, anyhow. It truly is "time to go home"--give up the elitist crap and just be who we are, who we were made to be. Whether that's a bus driver or a brain surgeon. | |
| Caedmon's Call – Dance Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I think it's cute that 2 of the people who replied to this song are named Sarah. :*) "Every Sunday night, you know that Sarah comes to see us..." |

| Caedmon's Call – Piece of Glass Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I've never heard the "filling me up, filling me out" version--are you sure you didn't just hear it wrong? | |
| Regina Spektor – Consequence of Sounds Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Ok, so here's what the lyrics really are. : ) My rhyme ain't good just yet, My brain and tongue just met, And they ain't friends, so far, My words don’t travel far, They tangle in my hair, And tend to go nowhere, They grow right back inside, Right past my brain and eyes Into my stomach juice Where they don’t serve MUCH USE--not "my juice" NO HEALTHY CALORIES--not "all melted calories" Nutrition values. And I absorb back in The words right through my skin They sit there festering inside my bowels The consonants and vowels The consequence of sounds The consonants and vowels The consequence of sounds Got a soundtrack in my mind, All the time. Kids- Screamin' from too much beat up And they don't even rhyme, They just stand there, on a street corner, Skin tucked in And meat side out and shot, And I’d like to turn them down But there ain't no knob. BORN--not "run"--into picket fences Not into picket lines. All this hippie-shit for the 60's KIND OF CLICHE--not "and another cliche"--for our time. But, But a one of these days your heart Will just stop ticking, And they sorta just don't find you till your cubicle is reeking. The consonants and vowels The consequence of sounds The consonants and vowels The consequence of sounds Ahh ah ah ah ahh ah ah ah Did you know that the gravedigger's still Gettin' stuck in the machine Even tough it's a whole other daydream. It's another town it's another world, Where the kids are asleep, where the loans are paid And the lawns are mowed. Whad'ya think? All the gravediggers were gone Just cause one song is done? There’s always another one, Waiting right around the bend, Till this one ends, Then it begins SQUEAKY CLEAN--not "quickly"--then it starts all over again. The weather report keeps on Tossing and turning, Predicting and warning, And warning and warning of, POSSIBLE LEAKAGE FROM--not "possibly it could be"--news publications and, POSSIBLE LEAKAGE FROM--not "possibly it could be"--news TV stations. That Very same morning right next to her coffee She noticed some bleeding and heard hollow coughing and National Geographic was being too graphic, When all she had wanted to know was the traffic “The worlds got a nosebleed” it said “And we’re flooding but we keep on cutting The trees and the forests!” And we keep on paying those freaks on the TV, Who claim they will save us but want to enslave us. And sweating like demons they scream through our speakers But we leave the sound on 'cause silence is harder. And no one’s the killer and no one’s the martyr The world that has made us can no longer contain us And profits are silent then rotting away 'cause The consonants and vowels The consequence of sounds. The consonants and vowels The consequence of sounds. Ah ah ah… My rhyme ain't good just yet, My brain and tongue just met, And they ain't friends, so far, My words don't travel far, They tangle in my hair, And tend to go nowhere, They grow right back inside, Right past my brain and eyes Into my stomach juice Where they don't serve much use No healthy calories, Nutrition values. And I absorb back in The words right through my skin They sit there festering inside my bowels The consonants and vowels The consequence of sounds The consonants and vowels The consequence of sounds |

| Devendra Banhart – Long Haired Child Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I don't think it's necessarily about freedom, although that's one possible meaning. I think it's more about the universal cry from parents everywhere: they want their kids to have it better than they did, whether that means more freedom, being more prepared, having more money or more opportunities, whatever. | |
