A. A. Bondy – A Slow Parade Lyrics 13 years ago
I think it's much more a song about losing someone. From the first verse, I get the feeling he's a pall bearer in a funeral procession a la Louisiana, literally dragging the coffin and it's shadow down the street. Perhaps contemplating the moment he met the person that died.

The chorus is either him sinking in a depression or simply being in a place where the oceans waters calm him down.

The second verse actually gives me the thought it's a funeral. A slow parade could easily be a funeral procession. Ashes are nothing and the person missing from his life doesn't bother him sometimes, but others it leaves him distressed not knowing what to do. He is well aware that people leave your life just as quickly as they jump in it, and he wants the depression to dissipate so he can move on. The depression is pretty strong though as he says he was just gliding through a dream where the love was real.

The ending chorus may be simply reiterating the first's feelings, or him killing himself. That's just how I see it. It always leaves a twinge in my heart similar to Lover's Waltz.

My Brightest Diamond – Golden Star Lyrics 13 years ago
I get the feeling that the song is about making love, but if you look a little deeper, you can see that the song is about finding a love or feeling you didn't see before in plain sight. The opening verse reflects that by saying she didn't feel close to him, that something felt off being near him. Now she finds herself together in bed with him resting underneath his arm and she is lit up inside with a feeling she did not expect and can't contain it. Whatever relationship they had before is now moot and as they get closer the feelings she has for him become more powerful, their love, and exploding golden star. Tonight we are full up, in spite we rejoice could mean something keeps them apart and in the moments they are together they rejoice.

Fleet Foxes – Meadowlarks Lyrics 14 years ago
That line makes sense to me, just boys and girls playing together. This just occurred to me, "Little children laughing at the boys and girls" is likely "Little children laughing, all the girls and boys." Makes the lyric make sense a lot more.

Going by the actual musical sounds, I can hear a bit of that sleepy you're talking about, but most of the song seems to be in a minor key and again to me, more of a sad tone. The last note is in a major key though, ending the song literally on a happy note, so the sunflower wanted to nourish the hummingbird, but the hummingbird cannot eat seeds, primarily nectar. The meadowlark on the other hand can. That aside, this song is remarkably beautiful. Should I ever have a daughter, I will sing this for her.

Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal Lyrics 14 years ago
I always thought that the song was just reflecting on childhood memories. The person talking to us in the song is pointing out the things he most remembers about an event or events. In this case, we have a group of kids playing in the snow and are bundled up. In their playfulness, the person talking turns his head to see a friend fall into the snow, with either his scarf, or a small amount of blood (think a bleeding nose or a slight cut, nothing deadly) contrasting the white snow on the ground.

Going by the video, and it backs up the childhood memories, you can see that they are winding back through time to when they were young, remembering the clumsiness of one friend and still being a happy thought. At the end of the video, time speeds forward and their age catches up to them. We should all know by now that Spring is the time of new life and youth, Summer is the prime of life, Fall is the decline, and Winter is the end of the cycle. Knowing this, a group of old men in their White Winter fondly and happily remember their youth. There you go, White Winter Hymnal.

Fleet Foxes – Blue Ridge Mountains Lyrics 14 years ago
I'd like to agree with the people saying that the cabin (wooden nest, the home that gets snowed in) and the nature in the area itself is calling out to the singer.

I myself have a brother and I know that the time when we go our own ways in life is quickly approaching. Though I am the elder brother in this case I know I don't want to lose touch with him or my sister when we're all on our own.

-So the first lines of:

Lie down with me my dear
Lie down
Under stormy night, tell nobody

-Something is calling to me, a memory or a place perhaps.

My brother, where do you intend to go tonight?
I heard that you missed your connecting flight
To the Blue Ridge Mountains, over near Tennessee

You're ever welcome with me any time you like
Let's drive to the countryside, leave behind some green-eyed look-a-likes
So no one gets worried, no
So no one gets worried, no

But Sean, don't get careless
I'm sure it'll be fine
I love you, I love you
Oh brother of mine

-My brother is stranded at an airport on his way to the Blue Ridge Mountains, with no where to go, I call him up and invite him to stay at my house, he is always welcome in my home. We should go out to the country and leave our cares behind and be ourselves again. Then my brother tells me it's okay and there's no need to intrude, so I tell him to be careful, and he'll get home and tell him I love him.

--I imagine it's either the passage of time or simple distance that hasn't necessarily estranged the two brothers, but more like the older brother has a family and they are what his majority of time, care, and attention goes to and the younger brother just wants him to be his brother again.

In the quivering forest
Where the shivering dog rests
Our good grandfather
Built a wooden nest
And the river got frozen
And the home got snowed in
And the yellow moon glowed bright
Till the morning light

-This is all imagery depicting the sights they saw when they were younger, and the younger brother is recalling them all, precious times with his brother.

Terrible am I child
Even if you don't mind

-Here I think the older brother really does not want to impose upon his younger brother (and genuinely feels he would be bothering him,) even though he does not mind lodging him. At the very end of the song, the younger brother tells his older brother he is no trouble.

Fleet Foxes – Meadowlarks Lyrics 14 years ago
I think this might be a song about a Sunflower.

Meadowlark, fly your way down
I hold a cornucopia and a golden crown
For you to wear upon your fleecy down
My Meadowlark sing to me

-The Sunflower is wanting for the Meadowlark to come down and feed upon its seeds, the golden crown being its petals.

Hummingbird, just let me die
Inside the broken ovals of your olive eyes
I do believe you gave it your best try
My Hummingbird sing to me
Mmmmmmm...
My Hummingbird sing to me

-The Sunflower wants so badly to peer into the eyes of the Hummingbird as it feeds upon it, but for some reason either the Hummingbird is not able to feed (not it's food source) or doesn't want to feed on the Sunflower, thus the Sunflower settles for just being able to hear the Hummingbird sing.

Don't believe a word that I haven't heard
Little children laughing at the boys and girl
The meadowlark singing to you each and every day
The arch-light on the hillside and the market in the hay

Here I think we have observations held by the Sunflower being relayed to us, such as a person saying "Don't believe a word that I haven't heard" Little boys and girls laughing and playing, the Meadowlark singing everyday, and a light on a hill or a market near a field.

As a whole, this song feels like a song of longing, of wanting to be something more, but still content, at least to me. It's hauntingly beautiful.

Fleet Foxes – Quiet Houses Lyrics 14 years ago
I kinda heard "Docking in" as opposed to Don't give in or Darkening. Those two make more sense than what I hear.

Going out on a limb here, and rationalizing to the best of my ability, lets assume docking in is correct.
We then get:

Lay me down - the course is being laid out and likely the shortest point between A and B.
Docking in - the sailor or whoever is finally docking in at his destination
Come to me - either the sailor's wife is calling to him or vice versa in one of those slow mo running towards each other kind of moments
Lay me down - someones getting a little something something, with the oooooh ooooohs in for good measure.

If it isn't docking in and is darkening instead, song gets kind of grim, as someone may be dieing/already dead, at least in my opinion. I'd like to think the song is a happy one however.

As for the whispered part I can make this out of the first line:

Quiet houses, lit up by candle light, in the pale of the night

In a youtube video I can hear the second line as:
Count your blessings, say goodbye, say goodbye, (something random goes here)

That second line is a pain in the ass, I can't separate his voice from the instruments well enough.

Oh my Jim James is a clever and sneaky bastard. My case:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Sec

Mind = blown.

Either we have just a regular walk through a town on a cold dry day or a song about two different walks, one where he's happy with the world, and the other where he's wary of the dangers of the world.

My Morning Jacket – O Is the One That Is Real Lyrics 15 years ago
No, idea what this could possibly about. I guess I can make a really bad analysis on the fly though, doesn't hurt right?

Always leave your televisor on.
Always give your answers by the phone.
-These coupled sound like a warning to anyone who'll listen.

If you're hurt he wants to feel it.
If you've money he's your dealer.
-This makes it seem like whatever "he" or "it" is there to possibly revel in your pain, and perhaps drive you to vices to bring about more pain.

If you're ready for him i don't want to see it.
-I'm not sure about this. Thinking about it now as I type, it makes it seem that if you are ready to confront "him" the speaker doesn't want to stick around and watch the slaughter.

Oh.
O is the one that is real.
-I had this crazy idea before I started typing this comment, maybe O is Oneself. Who else but oneself would want to feel pain or drive you to a vice or what have you. Using this logic, the previous lyric of If you're ready for him, I don't want to see it becomes a conflict between you and yourself.

The Radio, it plays!
-I guess since the radio plays the same songs, this turns into whatever you are saying has been said before, and will likely be repeated yet again.

How's that for an on the spot analysis? :D

My Morning Jacket – Run Thru Lyrics 16 years ago
I can imagine someone running from something or someone, possibly a fear even. The runner gets homesick, painfully so, and wishes and prays he can get home, then something challenges his faith or he is perhaps caught off guard and has to continue running from whatever is chasing him/whatever he left.

often times, i would hope & pray
then (that) faith came my way - "that" makes sense to me more than "then".

If we take it as "that faith came my way", it would change the meaning of the song a bit. It would mean he possibly is running from something terrible that possibly shakes someone to their core, and when he thinks that faith (God I'm guessing,) can save him, he is scared again and has to keep running. I could be totally wrong however, that's just how I see it.

My Morning Jacket – One Big Holiday Lyrics 16 years ago
I take this by the literal meaning. Starting with:

wakin' up, feelin' good & limber - One day, the singer wakes up, feeling well and ready for the day.

when the telephone, it ring - all of a sudden the phone rings

was a bad man from california - guessing from the following lines, a record producer, possibly sketchy.

tellin' of a stone he'd bring - I think of the agent or whatever saying "I'll make you golden" that kind of thing, and or diamonds and other types of stones that depict value.

and of better days - this goes with the previous line, promising better days.

from this town, we'd escape - Finally leave a possibly small/mundane town.

if we holler loud & make our way - If they sing loud and proud, in their own way...

we'd all live one big holiday - Their lives would be like a vacation.

so we listened & up the river - They heeded the agent's advice and went up river (to another place)

and recorded all the sounds - Should be obvious enough.

was some shakin' & some record playin' - Like someone said earlier, most likely handshakes in deals and records being played on the radio.

all the leather kids were loud - The rockers (usually associated with leather) were loud, cheering.

The literal meaning aside, when I listen to it, I feel as if I'm at a concert that starts of with an intro, then rocks something ferocious, mellows out a bit, rocks on again, then winds down to end the show. Like another person said, like an Epic tale. That's just me though :P

Gorillaz – Sound Check (Gravity) Lyrics 16 years ago
I decided to do some looking into what the sample could be saying.

On one site someone said "I've got no luck at winning."

I manage to hear several different things:

How come nobody's leaving?
leaking?
I saw no bodies ---

I can hear all three of these possible solutions. The real thing that is throwing me off is the word at the end that sounds like leaguing/leaving/leaking. Maybe he's saying "I've got no luck at leaving." We may never know.

Keane – Atlantic Lyrics 17 years ago
[I hope all my days
Will be lit by your face
I hope all the years
Will hold tight our promises]

The speaker is thinking (hoping)that throughout his life, his wife (I assume) will be the face he sees every morning, and he hopes to live his wedding vows with her until the very end. Til death do they part.

[I don't wanna be old and sleep alone
An empty house is not a home
I don't wanna be old and feel afraid

I don't wanna be old and sleep alone
An empty house is not a home
I don't wanna be old and feel afraid]

This is a fear that most people have, my greatest fear, of being old and alone in the world, afraid of the end. This could also mean that the speaker is a woman, thinking about her husband, since in most cases a woman outlives a man by about 5 years. If you think about it, someone you have known and loved for many many years, is gone...I can't imagine how crushing a feeling that is.

[And if I need anything at all]

[I need a place
That's hidden in the deep
Where lonely angels sing you to your sleep
The modern world is broken]

I'm thinking that this part means if he/she were to end up alone, he/she would need a secluded place, where lonely angels sing you to sleep (fond singled out memories I guess.) The modern world doesn't really cater to this, making it broken.

[I need a place
Where I can make my bed
A lover's lap where I can lay my head
Cos now the room is spinning
The day's beginning]

Again, the speaker needs a place, a home. A bed to make, a lovers lap to lay in, to take solace and be at peace. The room is spinning, perhaps the speaker is waking up from a dream, maybe even a nightmare since the first half of the song is dismal and stormy. The day begins anew with that, and is the partner in the dream next to the speaker in bed? I'd like to think so.

My Morning Jacket – Sec Walkin' Lyrics 17 years ago
Left leg. Right leg.
One leg at a time I
Keep on walkin. I keep on walkin.
Red light. Green light. First
Light I see tonight I'm walkin.
Ooh yeah I'm walkin.
-----
The speaker is walking. Walking one leg at a time. The red light/green light significance could be a red light being an obstacle/hardship, and a green light being movement forward and prosperity. No matter the "light" he will continue walking.

Fever! breathe in your own cool, blue air.
-----
Perhaps, in times of hardship, or a big decision, tension rises (fever) and as advice says to take a deep, fresh breath of air.

Look for eyes that hypnotize and sparkle.
Look for eyes that hypnotize and sparkle...everywhere.
Brother, brother- don't you care?
Brother, brother- don't you care?
-----
While in his/your journey, look for the people who's eyes will captivate and amaze you. They are perhaps there to help you/be with you. In the case you are no listening/paying attention, the speaker calls you brother and asks you if you even care about his advice maybe...

Left leg. Right leg.
One leg at a time I
Keep on walkin. I keep on walkin.
Red light. Green light. First
Light I see tonight I'm walkin.
Ooh yeah I'm walkin.
-----
Same as before.

Fever! breathe in your own cool, blue air.
-----
Also the same.

Demon eyes. demon eyes are watching.
Demon eyes. demon eyes are watching...everywhere.
Brother, brother- don't you care?
Brother, brother- don't you care?
-----
Like the phrase before that is very similar, the speaker is again giving advice. This time to watch for the demon eyes, the evils that will approach you. Again, as a friend/brother, do you even care about the speaker's advice/warnings.

In my opinion this is the second best song on the album right behind Thank you too! with Touch me I'm Going to Scream pt I & II tied for third. Anywho, that's what I think the song is about.

My Morning Jacket – Thank You Too! Lyrics 17 years ago
Really didn't think I was gonna make it.
Really didn't think I was gonna make it this way.
Put on my robot face. Hide my emotions way far away from me.

Oh! You really saw my naked heart.
You really brought out the naked part.
I don't know what you were doing-
I know I just want to thank you for thinking of me.

I want to take you. For all that you are.
Although our worlds seem far apart
I want to see you- thru all that you do.
I want to thank you.
----------
This part is obviously about the speaker who had been squeaking through life, having no love in his life, put aside his emotions and is telling a woman about his tale. Then he goes into explaining how this woman who is now in his life saw through his "robot face" and was able to bring about the return of his real self. The speaker had no idea what the woman was doing in, I assume conversing and building a relationship with him, but wants to thank her for saving him. The speaker wants to see and take in everything that the woman is. As for the worlds apart line, I take that to mean that perhaps they are two very different people.
++++++++++

It was strange and it was soothing, and you could even say amusing-
The way it came to me.
You'd devised a simple plan, that would change the fate of man,
you'd thought of everything

Oh! you really saw my naked heart.
You really brought out the naked part.
I don't know what you were doing-
I know I just want to thank you for thinking of me

I want to take you. For all that you are.
Although our worlds seem far apart
I want to see you- thru all that you do.
I want to thank you.
-----
I think this part he is directing towards God. After realizing that God has found him and vice versa, the speaker begins to thank God, for in the greater scheme of things, took time and consideration to bring the person into the speakers life. That would explain "I don't know what you were doing- I know I just want to thank you for thinking of me."

All in all, this has to be one of the most beautiful songs I've heard so far in my life, all 21 years of it. Evil Urges has introduced me to one of the greatest bands, and I will gladly make my way backwards through their past albums to find more treasures.

My Morning Jacket – Highly Suspicious Lyrics 17 years ago
When I first popped the cd into my computer to rip the songs into the media player when I reached Highly Suspicious all I could think was "what the hell is this?" After a couple failed attempts to make it through the song initially, I actually realized that this song is strangely awesome. It sounds as if it came straight out of the 80's and in my opinion is comedic in the way the falsetto and back up vocals make it a sort of "trip." The guitar is what finally made me like the song. The riff at 1:20 sounds kinda porn-tastic for some reason.

The Decemberists – Eli, the Barrow Boy Lyrics 17 years ago
Suicide makes sense, but I think both Eli and his Love are on opposite ends of the social ladder. In a way, that would make his Love's burial place one of choice, perhaps on her family's land.

Eli, who perhaps had an unrequited love for this woman, worked peddling different wares to keep himself alive. When his love dies, he wishes he could have had money with which to buy a fine robe she could have been buried in. Since he could not do that, he would do the next best thing.

He saves up enough money to buy himself "finer" clothes and throws himself into the river to join her in the afterlife. His family has him buried in a church yard hoping to gain him entry into Heaven. Lo and behold he is denied entry and is left to wander the Earth, trapped in a moment in time where he may have been wishing he had enough money to make his love his wife and thus buy her a fine gown. Perhaps this was a dream of his while they were both still alive.

In my opinion, this story doesn't necessarily take place in older times, but perhaps this day and age where there is still much a broken social ladder with little to no hope of moving up. The barrow is/contains his burdens and weighs him down, never able to climb to be with his unrequited love.

That's just me however...don't know if I make any sense.

The Decemberists – Sixteen Military Wives Lyrics 18 years ago
You all have got o be the stupidest people known to man.

How can any of you compare Hitler to Bush? Dumbasses.

Let's see, Hitler: Killed millions on his hellbent quest to take over the world. Brainwashed his nation and took advantage of them. Attempted to wipe out an entire ethnicity. HIS OWN ETHNICITY.

Bush: As far as I know, has not taken anything over, has not killed millions, has not tried to wipe an ethnicity off of the face of the planet. Clearly has not brainwashed his nation if so many of "you" are in such great and united opposition of him. He's done his fair share of idiotic things, but there is no way in hell that he can be compared to Hitler. You dumbasses actually believe that a president, no better, no worse than any other in U.S. History, save, the world, is as evil and vile as Adolf Hitler, the man closest to being the devil.

It sickens me to my core that any of you can believe that filth. Do you want to know why the United States sticks it's nose in other people's business? Because you fuckers can't even take care of your own shit. Not only that, but (especially to Europeans) don't see the irony in all of their U.S. Bashing claiming what the U.S. cannot be anything else like the rest of the "peaceful" world. You shitheads pretty much created the United states. you created every ideal that the United states has borrowed from. You spawned the United Stated from your own corruption. YOU, are what created everything the United States is, and ever will be. Don't believe me, read up on your history, and look at the total number of wars, the amount of corruption, the brutal nature of "civilization", the raping of land and peoples that occured before the United States, and who will you find at the helm? That's right. The rest of the world. It's human nature, deal with it. You say we don't care about the world, but remember, you didn't care first.

The Decemberists – Sixteen Military Wives Lyrics 18 years ago
Hmm. Haven't seen the video but I'll take your word on it. I'll admit, it's a protest song, but it's also dealing with the idocy of the media and celebreties.

Get ready for this. I was going to spare you all, but I changed my mind and I'm forcing you all to read it.

You know what bothers me though? Too many of you can't think of this war in a logical sense. Yes it's tragic that our soldiers are dying for what is a "wrong cause" yet, you fail to see that those men and women VOLUNTEERED, to serve our country. They knew the risks when they signed up, yet they still wanted to lend a hand and serve their nation, serve their brothers and sisters.

I'll admit, the US has taken on the role of "world police" but I highly doubt we are "bullies." I'm not proud that the US has done so, but lo and behold, who else is stepping up to do the task? The rest of the world certainly doesn't give a damn. If you wish the US would just stay out of everybodies business so be it. But what would have happened during WWI and WWII had the US not been involved at all?

As I recall, the US did not want anything to do with either war. We were an isolationist nation, meaning we didn't want to deal with the shit in the world. The rest of the world was getting its ass kicked in both wars. We didn't join in on WWI until two years before it was over because of Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare. We didn't want to, but we were forced into that one. WWII, same story. We didn't want any involvment. Japan had other ideas however and attacked the US first.

Where would you all be now if we hadn't been there to help?

And about the current war on terror...again we were attacked first. Iraq is a mistake, I admit, but do you want us to leave Iraq without footing or fixing our errors? If we leave now our losses will have been in vain and guess what? That tribal warfare/civil war will just ignite (if it already hasn't) and Iraq will be worse off.

I can only think of three wars the US has started on its own. The US Civil War, the Gulf War, and the war in Iraq. What happened to Korea and Vietnam, not to mention the Cold War altogether? You can't pin that all on the US, the blame equally falls upon Soviet Russia for those wars as much. The US willingly stepped up to the bat to stem the tide of Communism which was very agressive. Note how wicked bad Communism has failed since its iterration. Don't tell me "look at China, they're doing good and they're Communist." You ignore the fact that they have a Capitalist market in place of a Communist one.

Ah, the U.N. What a useless piece of crap that is. Hell, every "league of nations" type organization has failed before and will likely fail again.

What will you all do if the US goes isolationist once again? I don't know about my fellow Americans, but I'm tired of my nation bailing everyone else out of a bad situation only to be spat in the face and ridiculed. When the world's in flames and you come running to the US, don't be surprised if we're fed up and tell you "deal with it yourselves."

To me this girl seems to be the love of his life. She knows what he thinks, knows his secrets, she gives herself to him and vice-versa. He thought there would never be a person who understans him the way she does. They both understand each other and he's glad he's found the one. I don't understand how some people can follow a band so closely as to read all kinds of interviews and actually look into the lives of the band members. If it's solely to understand some of the lyrics, go for it, but no matter what, what is said here on songmeanings can only lead me into finding a meaning for MM songs. Music is what you want it to be.

Modest Mouse – Spitting Venom Lyrics 18 years ago
Anyone else besides me like the trumper in the second half of the song? Makes it sound like he's losing a battle and/or rising up to defeat his opponent.

Woohoo woohoo!

Everytime I listen to the whole album, it feels more and more like Modest Mouse. Love the new sound, it changes like all of their albums.

Woohoo woohoo!

Modest Mouse – Fly Trapped in a Jar Lyrics 18 years ago
Haha, I think this is the new Alone Down There and Satin in a Coffin combined. I like the Disco-ish sound. That may be because I've listened to it growing up so I'm used to it.

Modest Mouse – Dashboard Lyrics 18 years ago
I, like many people, didn't even hear of a band called Modest Mouse before Good News came out. I loved it so much I bought a majority of their albums that were older. I love the sound of the old stuff, but I also like how they've evolved over the years, keeping things fresh but letting us know it's still them. My first listen through this album gave me an impression of "wow, this sounds different." I listened to it several times and have already gotten used to it. All of you who are playing the sell out and their new albums are shit cards are full of it.

The Raconteurs – Blue Veins Lyrics 19 years ago
I reversed the reversed part and it's confusing as hell. I've able to come up with:

Then he needs to know where wer're going first of all
And I'm just as cool as the rain yeah
Then all the folks will want to believe him
Come live with the best of all yeah

This could also go for the last two lines of the reversed part:

Then all thoughts of a woman will leave him
God this was the best I found yeah

I hear both and I can't decide which would work, or maybe a combination of them. There's my two cents.

As for the meaning of the song, me and my dad were listening to it some time ago and he was telling me that if someone has blue veins, that it could be they have blue blood, which would make them wealthy. This would make sense with the lines:

Yeah but all of these things
All these things
They're all truly nice but ain't nothing
Ain't nothing compared to the love that's running through your little blue veins.

Thus meaning he loves the woman more than her money.

This may anger some people, but I don't care. The Raconteurs kick Panic! At the Disco's ass! (My sister refuses to believe so)

The Raconteurs – Intimate Secretary Lyrics 19 years ago
It took time listening with only one headphone (the left ear) but this is what I hear in the last two verses.

Within the rubble obscurist?/ of scariest? malarky.
A Doulocracy Ecclesiarchy.
Our fellow's craft is just not for sharing
He's not an intimate secretary!

The Ex-Agnis Inspector Inquisitor
I dare mock our illustrious master.
Are you part of this kakistocracy?
Is this greeting the type that's meant for me?

That's what I was able to discern. I dunno if I'm anywhere near being right. Thought I'd give it a try. Bitchin song!

P.S. I just realized this song could be dissing the government.
