| The other comments have covered the meaning, so I've gotta say the "harbors of my own" is a nice little reference to Harbor :) | |
| Josh Groban – You Are Loved (Don't Give Up) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I don't understand why people feel the need to see this song as being from/about God specifically. To claim Josh Groban is a Christian artist is to narrow down his fanbase considerably -- he makes uplifting music, yes, but the beauty of it is that it can be interpreted in both spiritual and secular ways. I've never heard God referenced in any of his non-classical songs; even You Raise Me Up is meant to be taken any way it's needed. | |

I'm inclined to say - keeping in mind that this is just my interpretation - that if this does have religious undertones, it can be interpreted as almost anti-Christianity, or at least our idea of it. The duet parts seem to me to be symbolic of duality (God and the devil being the same being), or evil masquerading as Jesus/God/what have you (I'll refer to this as "Jesus") - for example: " Bound at every limb by my shackles of fear Sealed with lies through so many tears Lost from within, pursuing the end I fight for the chance to be lied to again" It's as if the singers know it's ("Jesus'" words) a lie but, as they're drawing closer to death, desperately wish it wasn't. "You will never be strong enough You will never be good enough You were never conceived in love You will not rise above" "Jesus" - note the duality - is breaking them down, telling them they're not good enough for "him". "They'll never see I'll never be I'll struggle on and on to feed this hunger Burning deep inside of me" Singers want to tell people that everything's a lie, but know no one will believe them. "But through my tears breaks a blinding light Birthing a dawn to this endless night Arms outstretched awaiting me An open embrace upon a bleeding tree" They've given up and given in to believing the lies. "Rest in me and I'll comfort you I have lived and I died for you Abide in me and I vow to you I will never forsake you" Take a good listen at how this part is sung, and note again the duality - sort of menacing, imo. |
