Antony and the Johnsons – Free at Last Lyrics 14 years ago
The lyrics look like an old negro spiritual (is that racist?) from the 19th century, but sung by a hermaphrodite from Manchuria in the 21st century. The track is pretty jarring among the rest, but that's why it's the 2nd-to-last track, now isn't it? It's such a perfect perfect perfect intro "I am free at last!" to Bird Gehrl. Despite the heartache and despair, I Am A Bird Now - free at last - born into soon the sky

Avey Tare and Kría Brekkan – Sasong Lyrics 15 years ago
it's absolutely a sa[d]song about a break-up. it's about a period of life marked by absence. shadows, moments of missing, and unbearable emptiness that affects you on a visceral level. "a disease that makes my hearing imperfect" and "i hid my eyes with my hand." but at least he makes some wonderful noise!

Diane Cluck – Held Together (Let Go If You Will) Lyrics 18 years ago
i think this song has some moral ambiguity to it. it seems as though it's talking about letting go of any inhibitions, preconceived notions, and becoming someone new. 'hold together' and stay the person you've been or if you feel like a change is needed then 'let go if you will.' maybe suggesting that the things we take as foundations for our own lives aren't so important, that we can let go of them if we choose, that we shouldn't be so attached to this identity that we think we've found for ourselves.

that being said, it also has a sort of hedonistic tone to it. becoming who you will, doing what you will, and paying for it all 'once you decide to' does sound fun. but, as she says, 'see what's left' afterwards. frivolously abandoning oneself for a lighter existence will not necessarily yield a substantial existence. the tone of the music is haunting as well, suggesting that maybe messing around with these sorts of things like one's identity isn't necessarily as easy as holding together, and letting go if we will, as much as we'd like to think that we can become whomever we wish.

as for the only real concrete imagery cluck presents us with in this song -- maybe the collision that won't happen before its time demonstrates some sort of destruction that happens just as it should happen exactly when it will happen because it was always meant to happen precisely so. you watch documentation of that collision in slow motion, either praying that it won't happen this time or wishing it would happen already. and, trying to avoid this collision through drifting apart (rather than coming together) yields the same result in the end. these collisions happen and we can either face them as they are - "hold together" - or delay them until they come in alternate form - "let go if you will."

The Books – Take Time Lyrics 18 years ago
i just watched Medea today actually, after randomly finding it in torrent form a few days ago. i was pleasantly surprised when i recognized those lines in the first scenes of the movie!

according to the film's english subtitles (which aren't that great) and my own interpretive translation:

"tutt'è santo" means "all is holy"
"non c'è niente di naturale nella natura, ragazzo mio" means "there is nothing natural in nature, my boy"
and, "tienilo bene in mente" means "remember this well"

in the film, a centaur is speaking these lines to a small boy, so the line should probably be "ragazzo mio," not "ragazza mia."

i'm just a piece of zwieback toast getting soggy in a baby's aching mouth"

Joanna Newsom – Sawdust and Diamonds Lyrics 19 years ago
since nobody's mentioned it yet, this is the only song on Ys that she performs completely solo - just her voice and her harp. it makes the song seem much more intimate than the others

when i casually listen to the album i like Only Skin the most, but when i am trying to absorb this album, I loooooooooove Sawdust & Diamonds the most.
