I think it's about his former addiction and the music industry at the same time. 'Monkey on your back' is definitely addiction: so the 'sidewalk boss', the music industry boss (and yeah there are shades of 'pimp' in this phrase - showing how degrading he feels the whole showbusiness thing is) only sees him as a junkie and is exploiting his image as an addict to sell records: 'shaking hands with my monkey.' At the end of the day, the music industry becomes his new monkey and he doesn't feel able to move on from his junkie image: he'll be 'pumping out the product' because 'anything is better than nothing.' The verse that starts, 'look at your hands unoccupied' seems to me to be the music industry bosses talking to Elliott: 'now you've got over your addiction you can write us lots of music...' |

The other night my boyfriend and I got drunk and listened to this song which reminded us of about 5 years ago when it came out and we used to hang out in our home town bumming cigarettes and wearing huge baggy jeans and wallet chains. even though this isn't the kind of thing either of us really listen to anymore.. I dunno, it put such a huge smile on our faces because it's a song about nostalgia and loving where you come from - that makes us nostalgic for where we came from. :) lovely. |

Elliott Smith so often hides his drug references in everyday phrases made into elaborate metaphors, and that's why I think he's one of the greatest writers about that subject ever. it all sort of represents the way addiction just creeps into every part of a person's life. |

Really? I've always found this song easy to interpret but maybe I'm just kind of projecting my situation onto what are some pretty abstract lyrics...
anyway to me it seems to be about coming home to a place where you used to party hard (living in a bottle), but have now left (out of here), and having one last joyful fling with the place and the people you used to hang out with (we know your house so very well and we'll bust down the door if you're not there). Anyway. whatever. beautiful. |
