It definitely seems like a song about a prostitute. Burlesque dancers in videos are "code" for more naughty stuff. Oh, and it's not "Blagger" - I'm fairly certain it's "Blackguard", which is pronounced "Blagger" in England. |

This song has a great Irish ballad feel. The lyrics are nice and complex, without being bizarre or pretentious It seems pretty straightforward, lyric-wise - she's exhorting her lover to come with her on adventures out in the world. NPR says that the guy who wrote the song wrote it for his wife, Christina, but had one of the women sing it because it sounded much better with her voice. |

I can't agree with you on the daughter thing. I have a young daughter, and the tone of the piece is too sexual, too permanent to be a daughter growing up and moving away. I still remember being rejected by a crush as a young man, and this song captures the frustration and bewildering terror perfectly. Letting a child go out in the world is not trivial, but it is bittersweet (i.e. there are good things - pride and secondhand excitement). This song is totally bitter. |
