I think this song is about lying to yourself.

classydame, you're on point. I like your interpretation.

I originally thought this song was about ending a drug addiction. Rails being rails of cocaine. But now I think I was wrong. Maybe they like to hang out at the trainyards. Maybe the train is a metaphor for something, maybe not. Regardless, it's a great song.

The Notwist – Consequence Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a great song. Especially the simple advice given, "Fail with consequence, lose with eloquence, and smile."

I need to do all three more.

The Notwist – Pick Up the Phone Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song might be about agoraphobia, or drug addiction. Someone close to the songwriter, who is holed up in their apartment, too broken to leave, to ashamed and scared to answer their phone.

Or maybe it is about a relationship... a fight caused by jealousy.

Subtle – Red, White, & Blonde Lyrics 19 years ago
I can't even pretend to understand 90% of Dose's lyrics. But... it is always entertaining to try... and this song is a little more approachable than most.

To me, this song is a critique of mainstream American culture. Trying to intellectually blossom in a shallow, hollow, land of denial.
I dunno. It is definitely a time for bling and blong and noise and haircuts and fashionably lying to oneself.

Death Cab for Cutie – Lightness Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a beautiful song. Obviously on the surface it is about longing, lust, and the hesitant nature of a particular woman. When I read between the lines, (I'm probably over-analyzing), I think this song is about the songwriting process. "Ivory lines lead" immediately provokes an image of piano keys to me. In the background of the song, there is a squeaky, nostalgic swingset sound. It sound like Oo-wa-ho to me. Maybe the song was written using this sound as a lead. Or maybe swingsets have some significance to the subject of the song. Also, with "looking for the patterns in static / they start to make sense the longer i'm at it." I interpret this as a search for inspiration. When I'm trying to put something together (like a song), I focus on some thing, a paperclip, or dust floating through the air, or anything that will provide a focus for my mind while I piece together the fragments of my idea.

It's interesting how we interpret lyrics in whatever way makes sense to ourselves personally, based on our experiences and personal battles and beliefs and what not.
