Seems like he's trying to make the point that the devil isn't to blame for all thats wrong in the world, its humans themselves ("and i cry out, who killed the kennedys, when in the end it was you and me"). All in all, I agree with tuot. :) Any way you interpret it, its a wonderfully written song, musically and lyrically. Wonderful. |

@Malkavian: Have you heard any rap that isn't on the radio? Have you listened to Dalek? Or Outkast? Outkast DOES have meanings. BOB is about half-assing yourself, Hey Ya is about how shallow and stupid relationships are becoming. As for this song, I think its about one man too obsessed with himself and his surroundings, trying to best everyone and everything, but totally forsaking everything he once loved. Someones already been crowned as the best, but that doesn't stop him. |

Sounds like he fell in love with a prostitute, and hes saying you dont need to whore yourself out for money or 'love' anymore. Various people have told me that bordellos, waybackwhen, would have a red light on the front door or in the window, and hes saying "you dont have to put on the red light". So, I'm sure red light doesnt mean 'stop being a hoe', since hes telling her she doesnt have to. Hes there, he can take care of all her needs now, he doesnt wanna share her with everyone else. :D |

I love this song, Cash's version doesnt really do it for me. It seems to me like he has personality issues, maybe MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder). About every verse has an allusion, and several contrasts, to good and evil. Every other verse has an allusion to the bible or something holy. Part of him denies the suggested murder, while the other is like one of those convicts who take up biblethumping as a hobby while in prison, trying to make up for what they've done. In the last few minutes, where he repeats the chorus over and over, it seems like he's alternating between the "good" and "evil" personalities... One verse is "And anyway there was no proof Nor a motive why"; so he's denying it; while the verse following it has "And I've got nothing left to lose And I'm not afraid to die", hinting that he knows what he's done is wrong, and he knows the consequences for doing so. It also hints at MPD in the verse "Like my good hand I tatooed E.V.I.L. across it's brother's fist That filthy five! They did nothing to challenge or resist" Hes talking about how his hand did something horrible. "that filthy 5; they did nothing to challenge or resist" may mean his fingers. It wasnt him who did it, but his hand. He KNOWS what 'it' did was horrible, and he's criticizing the hand for its, um... lack of better judgement. Any way you put it, this song gives me chills. I love it. |
