I think this song is about a couple at the crossroads, that point where the fervor has faded enough for them to see they aren't gonna make it in the long run. "From 6 to 10" it feels like true love, but by morning they've been yelling and don't want to look at each other.
Richard is letting her know that he is staying regardless, for better or worse. It's such a sombre song, until the chorus tells that he is truly in love with her despite their troubles.....I still get a little choked up the way he hits the lyric "beside", that longing for something so close yet still out of reach.
He's leaving her to make the call, the pill or the gun. I guess metaphorically the pill is her giving him what he needs to be a better partner, and the gun is her ending the relationship. |

I feel like it's about a guy whose parents got divorced when he was a kid, and his journey to become a man in the aftermath of that upbringing. Then in the last verse he's telling his dad it's ok you quit being mom's husband but you can't quit being my father. |

@[Harmony4:18450] I've always heard the first line as "Twenty-nine, pearls in your kiss, a singing smile".....this would imply that the song is written for one who is 29 years of age. |

I think this song is about a deadbeat dad who didn't know if he was in or out.....but that's me, I could be wrong. |

I think this song is about the son of a clingy mother who believes she made him and therefore owns him (Stretch the skin over my head, yeah you know where I'm comin' from). She invests too much of her identity in him (Give up to greed, you don't have to feed me), and expects too much intimacy from him (Give up to fate, you don't have to need me). He's coming of age and breaking free from being her boy (So let it go, won't you let it drown me in you) even though it will kill her inside (I see you turn around and burning down) and the relationship will be forever broken (Seal my tomb without my face, I'm going to the lonely place).
This song is definitely a Top Five Side One, Track One.....and I love the way it segues into My Wave, then Fell on Black Days, and then Mailman. Great '90s album. |

I remember hearing a soundbite where Chris Cornell said he would imagine himself as Syd Barrett while singing this song. He went on to say the first Pink Floyd album had imagery he wanted to recreate in this song, it had a timeless quality that was as powerful today as when first recorded. |

The meaning I find in Venus is the singer in awe over the beauty of a woman. Yearning to connect with that beauty, and yet asking who is worthy of loving the woman. |
