Counting Crows – Mrs. Potter's Lullaby Lyrics 19 years ago
Definitely about his crush on Monica Potter. I heard that he actually played this song for her at one time. After a short relationship, they parted as good friends.

Some of the more intricate meanings of this song are lost on me, though. The wording is beautiful, but still extraordinarily vague. I do, however, love the line "If dreams are like movies, then memories are films about ghosts."

It's sad, but he obviously had a lot of dreams and goals in his life that, for some reason, were never achieved. Those so-sweet things in the past just seem to die off and fade in importance further along the road of life.

Blind Melon – Soup Lyrics 19 years ago
"All over a bowl of bitter beans". Here's what I got from that:

Some great tragedy has been perpetrated over something petty and worthless. Beans are often associated with the poor, a cheap meal that has no real worth.

It's like he's trying to say that, whatever bad thing happened, it was all for something worthless... something that was bitter anyways.

You're all idiots. Really. I am completely and utterly abhored with how you are approaching this song. The comments started with insightful ideas on the songs meaning, and since have degenerated into trite insults and one-liners abour Republican vs. Democrat. Every last one of you are armchair philosophers.

I am going to attemtp getting the discussion back on the right track by saying what I think the song means, rather than bashing those "communist liberals" or "facist conservatives."

One will never understand the full meaning of art... only the artist can understand this. One can, however, discern broader themes and meanings. I did not real through all the comments, so I may have missed some of the meaning, but tell me what you think of this:

"You depend on our protection, yet you feed us lies from the tablecloth." This strikes me as anti-war, but not anti-troop, like they believe the 'powers that be' are lying to the troops and stuffing their heads full of hollow propaganda. Filling the military with pride and a sense of good, almost divine, purpose makes them feel as though they are truly doing good while they fight in the Middle East, even making them EAGER to go over there and fight... like it's a party.

I don't agree with everything they seem to be saying, but I respect their passion, their insight, and I respect the fact that, unlike 99% of you, they grew up in a place where life was genuinely hard.

"djhtjl" seemed to have an idea about this song somewhat similar to mine. I invite any responses.
