I honestly think that all interpretations for this song (custody battle, environmentalism, etc.) are all interesting and pretty valid. But really, this song hits me on its emotional meaning rather than any specific story. Just the sound of kids playing at the beginning and then we he says "Control yourself, take only what you need from it..." combined with the music just sounds so sad and bittersweet. Also, the part about "But I thought this wouldn't hurt a lot, I guess not" could be about anything, but ultimately speaks to me about the sadness that comes when experience replaces innocence. Just beautiful. |

| Built to Spill – Saturday Lyrics

To me, this song seems like it is about an exceptionally selfless and dependable friend. The singer wants to let this person know how grateful they are they can trust them and pour their heart out to them, even if the friend can't actually fix their problems. |

| Okkervil River – Bruce Wayne Campbell Interviewed on the Roof of the Chelsea Hotel, 1979 Lyrics

The alien ship additionally ties in with a lot of the glam rock space themes. I think the last part is talking about how even though Campbell is ruined in terms of his musical career and will die of AIDS, he is, in some sense, not meant for this planet and his spirit moves on with the starship.
Also no offense Appers66, but I'm pretty sure you are misrepresenting the lyrics. This song stands alone pretty well as talking about the gay glam-rock musician Bruce Wayne Campbell a.k.a. Jobriath. |

| The Dandy Warhols – Nietzsche Lyrics

Werumm is right when he says Nietzsche was NOT a nihilist. Easily mistaken for one, but he was rejected nihilism. And all you out there who think Nietzsche is simply anti-christianity, get a clue. He was anti-christian, but he was also against any conventional morality. If you smugly sit and say I'm an atheist because I believe in the power of science, you are in reality just following one of the many "shadows of God" (a term nietzsche used). So either, this song is about more than Christianity or the Dandy Warhols didn't get Nietzsche either. |

| The Dandy Warhols – Godless Lyrics

I took the next song on the album "Nietzsche" to be a clue to this song. Someone who is totally godless (including all other god-replacements e.g. the human spirit, the tao, etc.), would hold nothing higher than their own whims. The truly goddess individual would be intolerable and incapable of anything but a very conditional, temperamental love. |

| The Thermals – Test Pattern Lyrics

I sort of think this song might be from the perspective of a guy who is in love with another guy but the other guy doesn't want to admit that he is gay. As in their relationship is just a "test pattern" and the other guy wants to be able to have a "normal" relationship and leave whenever he wants. Obviously the singer is upset about this. |

I think this one must be inspired by the Abjuration School of Magic from D&D. Its all about protecting yourself and the downside of what happens when you protect yourself too much from others. |

| Bloc Party – On Lyrics

In response to Adsar and bloc_party15, it definitely is related to cocaine but the song could just as easily be about a person associated with the drug for the singer. Someone who made them feel good at the time but was ultimately destructive. |
