| Röyksopp – Running to the Sea (feat. Susanne Sundfør) Lyrics | 4 years ago |
|
I don't think this song's really about suicide, since it keeps reiterating "I remember" and I mean if it is, then it'd have to be a ghost story or something (not impossible, mind you) The song is clearly about some emotional experience and the memories tied to it I think it's about the memories of someone she loved dearly > and all is wasted in the sand think hourglass > like breaking diamonds with your hand idk what the writer meant by this but given its placement in the song it makes me think of how she's as likely to break diamonds with her hand as she is to forget this person.. the river is her love and the memories are like diamonds |

| Röyksopp – What Else Is There? Lyrics | 5 years ago |
| sometimes I wonder whether this isn't just a love-letter to death :/ | |
| Röyksopp – What Else Is There? Lyrics | 5 years ago |
|
I definitely think this song's about an accident, with the main character as the victim What I don't get is who/what gave her the one wish. At first I thought maybe it was something after the accident.. ie a near death experience or something, but the comments here make me think maybe the whole thing happened because of a wish for true love or something along those lines like the person found her and it was fate, afterwards they fell in love but looking back on it.. the storm, the wonder, all that metaphor for the mystical elements of it all.. it was hellish and be careful what you wish for then again idk, "I've got a golden ear" (empathy?), "I cut and I spear" (power) but what else is there? "what I have and what I ache for" the one wish seems to be the center of the song's whole meaning, that's the only thing I can be sure of great damn song! |

| Depeche Mode – Halo Lyrics | 10 years ago |
|
After hearing this song (which I adore) last night, I awoke and suddenly had this realization: practically any depeche mode song I could think of sounds like it's about bondage. This song especially, it sounds like someone's trying to seduce some religious chick, even right up to the end of the song. "it will be worth it", taken to mean the sex/climax. Actually, it comes off as a pretty fair criticism of religion in general, althogh keep in mind that in the end, the guy's (probably) just tryin to get laid ;-) |

| Guster – Dear Valentine Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Well in the beginning I think he's sort of describing an actual dream. First, I noticed he's falling asleep *to* black and white tv (many people say they don't dream in color). He's flying in the dream, and can feel time slipping by, year after year. The way the song is written makes me think this is a story he's telling somebody, perhaps in a note, letter, or even a song ( ;) ). Next, he's looking at someone else's life, perhaps pondering his own, and can clearly see what is missing; maybe it's his dear valentine? |
|
| Counting Crows – Einstein On The Beach Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| The song basically says to me that intelligence is sometimes overrated. With the line, "the worst things come from inside here," it's talking about your head. Maybe that's also how the song relates to the songwriter's dog too; I mean dogs aren't very bright, but anyone who's had a dog knows how loving they can be. It's almost like saying that his dog probably contributed more to the world than the scientist. | |
| Counting Crows – Mr. Jones Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
Sounds to me like Mr Jones is someone's drinking buddy or something, and that most of the song is just some drunken rants & thoughts of the night coming from this dude. Strange th ough, I always thought for the one line he was saying "I don't wanna be bob dylan", and that line seems to fit in better than the next.. because bob dylan may be great and everything, but not exactly what you'd call funky. |
|
| Green Day – Having a Blast Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
First off, idk if this has been said already but the lyrics on the page i'm reading here says "i'm talking" and it should be "i'm taking." Anywho, this is probably one of their better songs, and that's saying a lot. The first line is just so damned bitter. The lyrics flow together perfectly, and really draw you into the plight of some unknown protagonist, and the last two lines tie it all together perfectly. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Debate Exposes Doubt Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
My impression of the song's ending was the same as @eatrawsugar's. It just looked to me like a reference to drunkeness, which isn't at all uncommon, especially considering the song starts out in a bar. This song's actually far more cynical than it might appear at first. His realization is (more or less) that love doesn't really exist. They're in the bar "Quietly erasing the week" with a few drinks. "And the words that we drive into the ground" are the most basic ones, "I love you." Maybe he's thinking of a past lover while pretending to read. When I read something like "The differences pale when compared To the similarity they share", it makes me think of that special and unique kind of love everyone thinks they have not being so unique and special. Then, everything makes sense to him; the doubt is exposed through his own internal debate, but he (alone) is left staggering and numb, perhaps physically as well as emotionally. |

| Bob Marley and the Wailers – One Love Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| funny, but about the fourth line of the second verse, I always thought he was singing "just to save his home." I'm not saying the lyrics are wrong at all, that's just what I always heard when I was listening to it. | |
| Pink Floyd – Welcome to the Machine Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think the machine is basically just a system of control. I guess in a way this song makes me think of some of the dangers of materialism. Sometimes when you buy more shit, in a way it's you that's being bought. You spend time making money to buy more things you probably don't need, to get through a life you're not too happy about, so you can make more money to buy more things. It's a rat race; it's a machine. Some people buy jaguars, and some people just get really drunk ^_^ (and some people just turn to religion; Marx had a point about it being the opiate of the masses) (R.I.P. Richard Wright!! A man who really left his mark upon the world) |

| Pink Floyd – Let There Be More Light Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| oh no, the aliens are going to get us!! :o | |
| Pink Floyd – Jugband Blues Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
well, IMO psychiatry is probably one of the biggest psuedo-sciences in existence. It's funny, people are so "skeptical" of string theory yet take psychiatry on complete faith, as if you can really prove what motivates a person to do something or prove scientifically why they do what they do. They make a behavioral observation and call it something. What the hell's scientific about that?! In other words, I don't think syd was, or wrote about being crazy. I think he was just very self-reflective and contemplative, and didn't take himself too seriously. He probably fell down the stairs one day, hit his head, and everyone just blamed the drugs. This song's basically what the title describes: a blues song. It takes a fun and light approach to some of the sadder things in life. It shows what an incredible artist Syd really was. RIP man! |
|
| Sponge – Plowed Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think this song's about that feeling you get when the music just takes you over, and it's kind of like being plowed :o | |
| Green Day – Give Me Novacaine Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I don't think jimmy's some kind of alter ego, I think it's just a metephor for bj's angrier/frustrated male side, as in his dick. maybe he just wants to get laid. I mean come on, think of it people.. he mentions st jimmy and BOOM! Full attention! |
|
| Death Cab for Cutie – Marching Bands of Manhattan Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I was watching the video over on yt, and the scene at the end where the guy with the bag over his head lays down next to the woman with the bag over hers, and it begs the question: why would they be wearing the bags over their heads? It sort of makes me think of memories and bad things that happen between people, which is the sorrow dripping into your heart, drowning your love. It sort of reminds me of that movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and the sort of things that transpired between the main characters that made them want to erase their memories in the first place. I see the paper bags over their head as kind of like that. | |
| The Doors – The Celebration Of The Lizard Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think the lizard is meant to be an embodiment of who jim was as a musician, sort of like a jungian archetype. I don't think he was talking about his dick or trying to deify himself in any way. Maybe this is a sort of poetic story about how the doors formed in the first place. I get the sneaking suspicion sometimes that jim might have been a male prostitute at some point in his life, but that's just a guess. Perhaps he felt the need to shed his old self, and all his concepts of love/hate, good/evil, and 'try something new' | |
| The Doors – The Soft Parade Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think this song is about a hitchhiking, but it also tells a person's story, and why they chose to do that. | |
| The Doors – Wishful Sinful Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think he's using the beauty of the planet as a metephor for the beauty of their love | |
| The Doors – Touch Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| he's sayin don't be afraid to love him, because he's going to love you for a really long time! Really really!! | |
| The Doors – Maggie M'gill Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think this song's about a prostitute | |
| The Doors – Land Ho! Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Considering its placement on the album I'm tempted to think this song is a continuation of 'ship of fools' Maybe they were thinking about being sailors or fishermen? Port to port, drinking and women, travelling and whatnot |
|
| The Doors – Ship Of Fools Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think it's kind of like what jim said at a concert once; "I don't know what's gonna happen man, but I wanna get my kicks in before the whole sh*thouse goes up in flames, alright! alright!" | |
| The Doors – Blue Sunday Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Yeah this has to be a song about pam; this is one of my favs on the album | |
| Nirvana – Serve the Servants Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I think the main chorus may be a reference to trinitarians being so judgemental. Serve the servants sounds to me like a reference to something jesus said about "he who is master must be servant", and then the legendary divorce could be trinitarians from christ's basic message of being kind & nonjudgemental of others. He's sick of thinking about it, he's sick of writing/singing about it. Then there's this whole part: "As my bones grew, they did hurt. They hurt really bad. I tried hard to have a father, but instead I had a Dad. I just want you to know that I, don't hate you anymore. There is nothing I could say, That I haven't thought before." (sounds to me like his dad was a religious nutter who used to beat him) I've always really liked this song. I actually remember getting a guitar and learning to play when this album came out. |

| Bob Marley and the Wailers – African Herbsman Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
this song is really great; it's funny how many of his lyrics I was hearing wrong I always thought he was saying "the old sandman might run slow.." |
|
| Bob Marley and the Wailers – Chant Down Babylon Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| babylon, as in the tower of babel; I suppose one could see it as a metephor for a system that builds it up so much it ends up collapsing in on itself. The money, power, and greed built it up and end up being its undoing. | |
| Bob Marley and the Wailers – Kaya Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I always assumed kaya meant sunshine :\ | |
| Bob Marley and the Wailers – Small Axe Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| this is probably my favorite bob marley song. I always took it to be a deeply spiritual piece, and the first verse definately sets up the mood of it all. One of my favorite lines ever, "no weak heart shall prosper." Here's a man who really knew the difference between playing smart and being clever. Sometimes you just have to follow your heart, no matter what anyone else thinks. | |
| Enya – Pilgrim Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
don't listen to other people, just follow your heart (yada yada) :) |
|
| Enya – Flora's Secret Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
this is a really beautiful song, but I'm inclined to agree with myoria. It has to do with how and when the past tense gets thrown into the song. In particular, these: "Some they know as passion some as freedom some they know as love and the way it leaves them" (the way IT leaves them) "this will be the day she will remember when she knew his heart" "whispering of love and the way it leaves them" "telling them of love and the way it breathes" oddly enough, the sex thing kind of fits >:) |
|
| Bob Marley and the Wailers – Could You Be Loved? Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
I figured a good way to do this would be to put my thoughts certain lines in parenthesis. "Could you be loved and be loved?" ( it appears he may be speaking of two sources of love that appear to be in conflict ) "We've got a mind of our own So go to hell if what you're thinkin' isn't right" ( I mean hey, come on.. even jesus got crucified! ) "Love would never leave us alone In the darkness there must come out to light" ( it's inevitable :) "We've got a life to live They say only, only Only the fittest of the fittest shall survive Stay alive" ( don't let "the man" get you! ) "You ain't gonna miss your water Until your well runs dry" ( loss of that spiritual love, when hatred/fear/whatever seems to overtake you.. it's a sh*tty feeling when you compare the two ) "No matter how you treat him The man will never be satisfied" ( don't take it personally; as the great buddha once taught, suffering is caused by attachment ) |

| Loreena McKennitt – Snow Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
it's an incredibly beautiful song about.... snow :) |
|
| Loreena McKennitt – In Praise of Christmas Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song always brings a smile to my face. I'm not even sure it's because of its lryical context so much as the manner in which she sings it. | |
| The Doors – You're Lost Little Girl Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
This is definately my favorite song from the album, especially this part: "I think that you know what to do Impossible? Yes, but it's true" I think this song's about people in general who aren't really true to themself; people who tend to lie to themselves and not do what they know they should be doing. |
|
| The Doors – The End Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| this song reminds me of 'catcher in the rye' for some reason | |
| The Doors – Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) Lyrics | 17 years ago |

| Guster – Satellite Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Well I think this is a love song. I seriously doubt that, in this day and age (with cell phones and whatnot) that a satellite would be used in these sort of negative unnatural and unttainable reference. Satellites relay information and keep people connected. She's his satellite, she's the navigator (passenger side!), she's his shining star (his guiding light). It's obviously someone who's a part of his life, otherwise it would be something like "you're my asteroid, baby!" The only reason she's always a little out of reach is because she's so independent. He knows she'll never just blindly follow him or agree just for the hell of it, and maybe that's one of the things he loves about her. In short, I think it's a real classy love song! I figure the melody alone sort of gives it away. I can't really think of anything negative about it, it's just beautiful. |

| Green Day – St. Jimmy Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The rock opera thing iambilliejoe said kind of makes sense. Don't wear it out! :P | |
| Green Day – In the End Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Yeah Whalebone & Drink_and_Fight pretty much already nailed this one. Great song >_ | |
| Green Day – Pulling Teeth Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I think this song's about a really bad relationship. Someone you really love who basicallydisrespects you constantly, pulling you back and forth. It's like pulling teeth | |
| Green Day – Burnout Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Perfect song to start off the album | |
| Death Cab for Cutie – The Face That Launched 1000 Shits (Revolutionary Hydra cover) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
It kind of sounds like a bad joke or something if you think about it. "That one chick was so ugly!" "How ugly is she??" "She's so ugly.. she's got the face that launched a thousand SHITS!" |
|
| Ministry – Cannibal Song Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| It sounds to me like a song about someone stuck in a prison and how the place seems to consume him. | |
| Ministry – Burning Inside Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This is without a doubt my favorite Ministry song. It's basically a story about someone who's driven over the edge. The first verse pretty much explains how he got there, the second one why he stays, and the third one what he did when he got there. | |
| Green Day – 1,000 Hours Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| It's a good song but I'd have to agree with bj; sappy is the perfect way to describe it. I mean it sounds like something you could hand to wayne newton! | |
| Ministry – Breathe Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| It's about really fucked up shit! | |
