Belle & Sebastian – Piazza, New York Catcher Lyrics 17 years ago
Ok, so I'm a big music and baseball fan, so let me take a crack at this one. This song has probably seen a lot of recent popularity because of Juno. There are two things obvious about the song. It's about baseball and a relationship. Instead of trying to separate those two themes, it is easier to join them. One thing about baseball is that pitcher and catcher have an intimate relationship. This will sound like a stretch for those not too into baseball, but think of a professional relationship where the two people are unique and different but both rely on each other, like a soldier and sergeant if you will. The line "my responsibility has found a place beside you" refers to the a relationship where one is motivated to do the best for the other. In baseball the catcher calls all the shots. The catch tells the pitcher what pitches to throw (in general, don't jump on me if you think you know baseball and I don't) so the catcher has a duty of calling the shots for the pitcher.

Then, the song goes on into a tale about two lover's running away and adventuring together. Then comes the second verse that heavy with baseball analogies. I think the key lyrics to this verse are

"he’s praying for a doorway
Back into the life he wants and the confession of the bench
Life outside the diamond is a wrench"

The diamond is obviously the baseball field, and whether the pitcher is Sandy Koufax or another actual player, the pitcher needs baseball because life without it is not the same.

And this brings us to the last verse. The first two lines:

I wish that you were here with me to pass the dull weekend
I know it wouldn’t come to love, my heroine pretend

Speak of a relationship that is separated. The singer knows it won't come to love, but still wants that time together. This is analogous to the pitcher and catcher relationship where the two know that their relationship is professional and they're playing days won't last forever, but they need the game to make life seem important and to share something together. I think the whole song is tied up very well with the line

Meet you at the statue in an hour

The statue is outside the stadium, remember? It is time for a rendevous for the pitcher and catcher to play baseball, as well as for the couple to spend some time together. It is a moment to be together and forget about everything else. It won't come to love, eventually the baseball players will retire and they will be remembered by their stats, life will go on....but for right now, why not take the time and run off together, or meet for a moment to do something that makes you feel like a kid and distracts you from the outside world (play baseball) or just have a moment with someone you fancy. The baseball players and couple that is running away shouldn't be viewed as separate parts of this song but people with parallel feelings and in the same situation. So there you have it. It's late, I rambled, but enjoy.

(I don't think the gay references to pitcher and catcher are a stretch, but it's more so about the relationship. Koufax or not, again, I think it's about what it means. Piazza was a good player but was always followed by the idea that he was gay. The pitcher hits the sauce and is losing "his speed". Baseball players have personal lives and are people but are remembered for their stats and statues, etc...the two in the song just want to play baseball, blah, blah, ive said enough)

Deerhoof – Milking Lyrics 19 years ago
So I agree that the milkman is a creepy dude, but this song especially makes me think that the children try to retain their innocence by escaping to some "dream world" or area up in the clouds. Could be off, but the first stanza makes me think of the chaos of the world below while the children are safe above it. Or....maybe the children aren't safe, instead the armies and marching aren't necessarily bad, but an unavoidable chaotic part of life and the children have missed out on their normal childhood and growing up by being taken advantage of by the milkman. Both long shots but let me know what ya'll think.

Arcade Fire – Intervention Lyrics 19 years ago
brilliant song. in a time where most bands find it really easy to complain about the U.S. and the state it's in, the arcade fire wrote a song that at first seems about Bush and Iraq but things don't match up perfectly when you look at it that way. It is about religion and struggling to be a soldier of God when those around are not religious. "Every spark of friendship and love/will die without a home" Friends and family aren't religious so they will not have a home in God when they die. "As if there were only mouths to feed" People's spirit and sould must be attended to and taken care of, not just the physical body. It seems to work at first as an anti-war song but it all works when you think of it in terms of a person struggling to hold on to their religious beliefs while those around him/her do not have any.
