well not that every song has to be pinned down to one granite meaning but this to me is all about war, the rag is obviously a flag and the guttural bark of 'hoist that rag' sums up superbly the horrific vomiting bark of jingoism.
Getting even more specific it could not have been written when it was without alluding however indirectly to foreign policy of the good old us of a. Hoist that Ring! |

that's so funny I've always thought about the Thomas Jefferson bit and hadn't related it to a coin. nice little irony of the face on a coin in the gutter. nice one enslow: it's amazing how so many comments on this site are just: wow yeah that's a cool song. Independent as a hog on ice suggests an incompetent person desperately asserting their independence and flailing around in a panic as a result.
to me anyway
I love it because it is both a superb piece of on-the-nail characterisation in a few words and yet also elusive enough to create breathing room for the listener to get creative and add their own interpretation.
