"This one seems to me to be about Elliott fearing that the woman he is dating is in love with the public idea of 'Elliott Smith' rather than the real him. The one she really loves is the Elliott on the blue screen or on the coin-op tv. He fears he "can't compete" with the image of himself that is out there. His public image is totally wrong, but he feels it is better than the real him, and he can never measure up to the pictures of him" I cannot agree, because at this time, when he wrote this song (around 94/95 I guess), he wasn't famous except in Portland maybe. I think the song has - like in many ES songs - a general meaning. I'm french, so sorry for my bad english but how can you discuss on lyrics that are not correct? By the way there are 3 versions of this song : Stickman, Alternate (2) and an older live, with differents lyrics. "Slide after slide You know pain's the sharpest knife" - Slide after slide seems to be about a kind of chess game, and refers to "trying not think to many moves ahead", a common picture to talk about life. But on Stickman Alternate you can really hear "I cut slide after slide, mental pain's the sharpest knife" But what does mean "I cut slide after slide" so ? :o "You'd see I'm on the run From some monster offscreen Killing sons" Same here, what does mean killing sons ? Why not children to mean "young people". Cause, all the lyrics seem to be about the childhood : there is stickmen, drawings, monsters, he plays with the world as a balloon etc... but the idea of death is everywhere, really "disturbing" Anyway this song, the lyrics are certainly one of his best songs, so haunting |

the song can't be about suicide, just listen at the song, read the title men : it's call HAPPINESS :o I think it's about love, a love story. ES was a junkie, but it's very funny to see how people come to conclude that all of his songs talk about suicide, or drug. |
