| Kurt Vile – Freeway Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| beefsoupplease's explanation makes way more sense. Thanks though, Dfovero, for being really patronizing without offering any real explanation as to what actually makes that a biblical reference, or how the biblical reference ties into the rest of the song, kid. | |
| Theory of a Deadman – I Hate My Life Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| A rock star bitching about how hobos don't work and just "sit around and get paid". This guy gets to play music for a living and make tons of money yet he is bitching about his life. Also it sounds like nickelback mixed with kid rock. Worst song ever. This band is nothing but a money grab fuck fest | |
| Modest Mouse – The Stars Are Projectors Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Austral Opithecus: Even if Isaac Brock didn't write songs on psychedelics, his songwriting was certainly influenced by them on many songs, including this one. This song to me is mainly about the nature of our existence, life, on a very large (universal) scale. The stars are projectors. They provide the light that is necessary for life to survive. As mentioned before , the line "everyone wants a double feature, they wanna be their own damn teacher", is referring to people wanting an afterlife, people finding ways to assert their own beliefs. The part about the moderate climates is pretty straightforward, in order for live to evolve and become advanced, a planet needs a moderate climate, like ours on earth. Throughout the song, brock is drawing parallels between stars, the cosmos, scientific beliefs, and religious beliefs (you gotta be blessed and be cursed for sure). Another parallel is drawn in between these ideas, and thinking of the stars he's referring to as movie stars. People do worship movie stars and pop culture icons, and we are inundated constantly by the media. You've got the harder part You've got the kinder heart and it's true I've got the easy part I've got the harder heart, ain't this true Right wing, left wing, chicken wing It's built on finding the easier ways through I'm not quite so sure about this part, but I think he's talking about reproduction, and how reproduction spurs evolution in a species. the "you" he is referring to is a woman, and "I" is a man. evolution is built on finding an easier way, by passing on the best traits of the parents. This leads to the next part quite well.... God is a woman and the woman is an animal That animal's man and that's you Was there a need for creation? That was hiding in a math equation and that's this: Where do circles begin? This part wraps up the entire song, and seems pretty literal. All of creation, and the entire universe, is by nature a circular thing, with no clear beginning or end. This is really summed up well by a line in another MM song, third planet: "the universe is shaped exactly like the earth, if you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were. Certainly many ideas that go against christianity and creationism. Of course, christians that like Modest Mouse will skew what is presented to fit in with their beliefs, just as they do everything else. (everyone wants a double feature; they wanna be their own damn teacher) |

| Toby Keith – I Wanna Talk About Me Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| This song more than any other contemporary country song makes my blood boil. The meaning is obvious... he wants to talk about himself... but instead of just talking about himself, he talks about how he wants to talk about himself... This entire concept is ridiculously egotistical, and completely fucking pointless, esp considering that almost all of his songs are ABOUT HIM!!! Just look at how many of them start with the word "I". Does he really not talk about himself enough? Does he just love the sound of his own voice that much? Besides that, this song is written as though it is for a contest to see who can fill a song with the most trite bullshit possible. Who gives a fuck if you want to talk about yourself toby keith? | |

| Circulatory System – round Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Great lyrics, so universal, so simple, so pure in conception. could be about so many things all at once. Cycles, repitition, days, weeks, months, years. Bad Habits. Relationships. Could be about anything repetitive | |
| Elf Power – Rolling Black Water Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Its about obsessing about negative things | |
| Elf Power – The Spider And The Fly Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Not exactly sure, like a lot of their songs its about tripping, but there is more to it than that. "the spider and the fly": feelings of being the fly, trapped and helpless. Also about out of body experiences, past lives, and intrinsic knowledge gained from these things | |
| Neutral Milk Hotel – The King of Carrot Flowers Pts. 2 and 3 Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
people were right saying this song is about birth... at least part 3 is, obviously. but what about part 2, with the icky jesus reference that people get so uptight about? part 2 to me is about conception, with the lines "i love you, jesus christ, i love you, yes i do" is a dialogue of people having sex, jesus christ simply being used as an expression. This interpretation puts context to the lines "And on the lazy days The dogs dissolve and drain away" (FILTHY!) Although i find all of NMH's songs to be very spiritual, i don't believe this song has a damned thing to do with jesus directly. To truly appreciate this album, eat some psychedelic drugs and listen to the whole thing front to back, maybe a couple times. THe lyrics are truly unbelievable, the way they encapsulate all of life, in the most universal and specific terms, open to a mind boggling amount of interpretation. |

| Elliott Smith – Condor Ave. Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Unbelievably good lyrics... I agree the story is straightforward, and its about poor communication and a girl killing herself... one thing that no one mentioned, maybe because its too obvious, but "condor ave" is a reference to death, what with condors being scavengers and all. The song could also be talking about drug addiction, especially the lines and she locked the car and slipped past (withdrawing from the world) into rythmic queitude (developing a habit) lights burning (getting high) voice dry and hoarse (from doing too many drugs) and the entire second verse is talkign about alchoholism , etc. elliot was certainly a genious, most of his songs have many different depths of meaning |

| Modest Mouse – Cowboy Dan Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I agree with a lot of the things said on here, but there is also another way i've found to interpret this song. When isaac is talking about the "cowboy scene" he's talking about the current music scene, cowboy dan either representing himself or the part of the scene he doesn't like, pprobably a little bit of both. the lines "he hops in his pickup puts his pedal to the floor and says 'I've got mine and i want more'" really fits good with the excessive rock'n'roll mentality, and it could be interpreted as not talking about a pickup truck, but rather the pickups on a guitar and effects pedals. Just another way of appreciating this great song, from a musician's standpoint |
