I think gibbler's point on 1992 being a bad year for Blur makes sense, but it's important to recognise another possible meaning. 1992 was the year in which Damon first got with Justine Frischmann, and 1998--the year prior to '13' being released--was the year they broke up. In a way, the song's a dark recap of Damon's post-Leisure personal life, in particular his relationship with Justine, but also the direction Blur's music was taking at the time. A brilliant song, with--fittingly--oblique lyrics. |

I absolutely love this little unknown gem. Would it be wrong to see this as an equally cynical, perhaps even darker--albeit less angry--precursor to "Common People" and other songs from "Different Class"? We get a bitter lesson on class & love as only as Jarvis can make it, and the incessant passing of time. In all, a great stomp-along, think-your-heart-out song. |
