| AFI – The Prayer Position Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I think this song is about how we have replaced the Christian God with the Machine God, how we have regressed from nature, become connected through technology, and are in the a transition period of this. So yeah.. I don't know, this is my interpretation.. I think this is pretty deep for a pop punk song .. "Now! Peel the skin back from the flesh. Steal the flesh back from the starving static minds." primitive existence vs futuristic existence. our 'starving static minds' are constantly hungry for a new achievement. detachment from our 'out-of date' corporeal selves. "From nature we must stray, to clarity we'll climb." - Our society has no room for nature anymore. "Deadly impulse seems so natural, just look beyond it and we'll find a brand new evolution." - Human beings are wired to progress toward this technological era- it is in our nature. But, it is killing us in some ways. "Pushed to our knees so let us pray, and all together we'll bring the real rain." - rain represents a cleansing of the old ways "Watch all that's wasted wash away, so let it come. Our will be done." - Arrogance in our rejection of the old ways; WE are God now, so it is OUR will being done as opposed to 'his'. "Stature retrieved, regain our form. Break free from instinct that's left us all confined. From nature we must stray to clarity we'll climb. Tradition ingrained, now impermissible." - Our primal instincts are again, rejected for something else "Now comes a call for all to find a brand new evolution." - As we becoming more secular, we need to replace our previous God with something. "I can't help but fear, look to my species and tremble, to think that God is just..." - Unease at the coming of this new era, unease over the Machine overtaking of the 'creator', who has been denounced. "And in the distance there's a gathering that no longer seems so far away." - this could refer to how we have become constantly connected through the internet, cell phones, ID.. and what effect this could have us. Remember- only 100 years ago, it took months for a letter to travel from Europe to here. |
