| Jefferson Airplane – White Rabbit Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I'm sure I read a quote by Grace Slick saying she wrote it as a warning to parents who let their kids read Alice In Wonderland and then are shocked when their kids do drugs. | |

| This is an old Blind Willie Johnson song...great stuff! | |
| The Von Bondies – Pawn Shoppe Heart Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I read in an interview how jason was talking about Detroit being full of pawn shops and he once saw a wedding ring ring in there and it made him really sad, as though it was a broken heart, hence the album title. His howling is fantastic, you feel in in your gut..... |

| Zwan – Lyric Lyrics | 18 years ago |

People this song is amazing. Come on, about how religion/beleifs appear to constrrain but actually do quite the opposite. 'So take these chains and hold them as our' and 'a faith, not a grave' explain it. |

| Propagandhi – Bullshit Politicians Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This is amazing! "On this Day of Remembrance let us not kneel and pray for the dead. Let us stand and activate for the living, to rescue those about to die" That's awesome, it's in quotes so i was wondering who had said it first? |

| Propagandhi – Ladies' Nite in Loserville Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
I always thought this is about the Grace Atkins comment of "Feminism is the theory, lesbianism is the practice". There are certain feminists who belive the very act of sex to be demeaning to women and i think in this song the woman is like 'I'm gonna enjoy sex and not have it made into a political issue'. I mean it's said pretty explicity in the "fuck your bullshit femi-Nazi crap, no needle dick's gonna silence me" line. Basically you can be a feminist and enjoy sex with men. |

| The White Stripes – Rated X Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I meant it's about how harsh society judges women. | |
| The White Stripes – Rated X Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
The lyrics are really great actually, and very sad. Like if a woman looks like she's been around, the ladies hate her and the men want her but have no respect for her. It's about how harsh women are judges, so if you make a mistake you can be bound to it and suffer consequences forever really. But I think it's wrong To judge every picture If a cheap camera makes a mistake That's incredible. |

| The White Stripes – Icky Thump Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
It's basically about how it's ok for the rich white american to go to Mexico to get a whore ('you better kick yourself out....etc') but shouldn't complain when the tables are turned on him and he gets robbed and learns his lesson ('learnt to clean up after myself ....etc' prob maybe also mirroring menial jobs immigrants do in the US etc). It's cool, kinda political but not overtly so, takes a few times til you get it. A bit random but the whole topic of the song is like Propagandhi's 'Fuck the border'. |
|
| The White Stripes – Catch Hell Blues Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Bar far best song off Icky Thump, musically and lyrically! What about the 'if you really want some hot water, i can help you find it?'. Cool twist. |

| The White Stripes – A Martyr for My Love for You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Well it's all those things, he knows he'll wreck but cares too much for her and can't do that to her. And perhaps the teenage thing meaning that she's very innocent but he knows how manipulative people can be and how guys can use girls....so perhaps he's admitting that he'd only end up using her? But she's too young to have experienced that? | |
| The Smashing Pumpkins – Silverfuck Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| 'And i feel no pain' is pretty great, like he's not going to mourn her, or her fading because she made him know he wasn't enough ('Ive failed your summer ways'). | |
| The Smashing Pumpkins – Frail and Bedazzled Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
This song is inredible. And all I wanted Was to be a man And since I gave up I feel free Like there's no point living for other people's expectations. |
|
| The White Stripes – I'm Finding It Harder To Be A Gentleman Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The 'and i got mud on my shoe' bit seems quite mocking, like it's her fault (by complaining nad hence Jack dropping her). It could also mean that even when he's sticking up for himself, as he goes in the end, he'll still somehow suffer because of it, so no win situation ha! | |
| The White Stripes – Icky Thump Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Check out this month's 'Dazed and Confused' magazine, Jack said the song was about this white American going to Mexico to get a whore, and her turning the tables on him, which is quite a theme on the album apparently. AMAZING as ever. | |

| AFI – Ever And A Day Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
All great and pretty logical interpretations, but i don't think it's that despairing..... Davey says "So I lie in this field bathed in the light that loves me, with nothing left to lose". Light is knowledge, so perhaps it means he is now knowledgable about this bad situation, perhaps also meaning to say that it's not the first time he's been here (as the light 'loves' him). I get the feeling he's saying that he has learnt so much from this bad situation that he can no longer be destroyed further ("nothing left to lose"), which seems doomy at first though it could point to the notion of you need to die/lose all to be reborn/really gain freedom. I get I'm prob totally over analysing from the wrong angle but just seems to tie in with the end of Exsanguination....... |

| Hole – Reasons to Be Beautiful Lyrics | 19 years ago |

How can you say this is not about Kurt when she clearly plays on his suicide note at the end? When the fire goes out you better learn to fake It's better to rise than fade away... Whereas he'd written something about it being better to burn out than fade away. |

Some of these lyrics remind me of the following by Rumi: Oh, my Beloved, you will find us every night, on your street, with our eyes glued to your window, waiting for a glimpse of your radiant face. Beautiful song! |

| The White Stripes – Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Jack: “It is about really knowing what you want to say, what message you want to convey. To have control over your words. At the very last moment I changed the words “I don’t have the patience to watch you battle every miniscule disease” in the song “Girl, You have no Faith in Medicine” on the new record. I did it because it was written about headaches, but I realized it may be interpreted as if I was putting down people who struggle with other serious illnesses. At the same time, it was important for me to inject a certain measure of mystery in what I was doing, for it not to be too obvious. Therefore, I am sometimes reluctant to discuss individual lyrics. An artist does not write down in the edge (of the painting) what he wanted to say with it, what it should mean.” | |
| The White Stripes – Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
That was meant to be headache above.... Look go to http://www.whitestripes.net/faq.php Girl, You Have No Faith In Medicine [top] jack: "It came from a discussion between me and other guys about when girlfriends have headaches and won't take certain medicines 'cos it has "something in it." Guys will swallow anything. It's because [women] don't have faith. "It's about the irritation I was constantly getting with females arguing about headache medicine. Like, 'Oh, I can't take Tylenol, it doesn't work.' Whereas a guy would just take anything, he doesn't even think about it. It seemed like this tiny thing was a big, telling sign of feminine behavior. In my eyes. A guy can just put his coat on and run out the door, but a girl has to take 25 minutes waddling around looking for her purse or whatever. Not that one's better than the other, but they're different." Jack White: "I suppose it is just about this tongue in cheek take on male and female relationships when things are bothering girls about headache medicine. Aspirin, Tylenol and things like that. Its like men can take anything like a sugar pill and it will make their headache go away but there is always some sort of special care for women. It is sort of a metaphor for taking the time to care for someone I guess." |
|
| The White Stripes – Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Jack once said it was to do with women being stubborn and how if a guy gets a ehadache, he'll take an aspirin/medicine but a girl will try to 'let it pass'. Something to that extent.... | |
| The White Stripes – Ball and Biscuit Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This is amazing! I agree with most of what's posted and the whole sex/cockiness thing. But it can generally be 'you don't know how great i am (in more ways than just in bed) but once you do, you'll be sorry to have underestimated me'. 'Just wait Stick around You'll figure it out' Be patient. You'll see! |
|
| The White Stripes – Blue Orchid Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Yes, I agree with the virginity themes too, especially the view that the girl just gave hers up too easily. The whole 'you were given a flower, but i guess that there's just no pleasing you', like the girl didn't realise what a beautiful thing her virginity was. Plus orchids are especially vaginal, and well white...there you go! Actually, without meaning to sound like a freak, a girl once told me about how she was sexually abused as a kid but not raped, so she was still a virgin, and i had very odd dreams about white orchids with creased petals..... |
|
| AFI – The Lost Souls Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I really don't think it's religious either, though religious themes can and are used as methaphors.... Notice how strange the chorus is, 'look what you've done to me now, you've made me perfect'. When one says 'look what you've done', it's very negative, as though they shouldn't have done that, but 'you've made me perfect'. Makes me think of someone who is scared to love/open up to others (perhaps because they fear rejection/gettng hurt etc) so this person has made them love/open up etc, which is usually a very negative thing for the person but the feeling of love/compassion etc they are experiencing is so beautiful that 'you've made me perfect'. SO basically, you've made me open up/love/do something i avoid doing but it's beautiful and you've made me perfect. |

I live by this line: 'When you're bound by your own conviction, a discipline can be your addiction.' |

| AFI – Three Reasons Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I don't think this is necessarily about straight edge....more about treating those around you with respect and having a sense of responsibility towards people around you, which are quite straight edge values but you don't need to be edge to beleive in things like that. It's about honesty and responsibility and not being a coward. 'Another state? At any rate, I can't relate. There's no two ways, you're a disgrace.' Amazing and self-explanatory! |
|
| AFI – Exsanguination Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Plus, the same applies to 'into a world that's overcrowded'. At first it appears that Davey is lamenting at the world being full of too many people (overvrowded being quite a negative connotation, as though he thinks most people are not special etc) but by the end overcrowded could emphasise how individual and special he is, especially now that he's grown. All seems random from me, but i definitly didn't think of it on vampire terms... |
|
| AFI – Exsanguination Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I interpreted this song totally differently to the whole vampire theme...... If you go though it verse by verse the chorus takes on a different meaning each time, which I find especially clever. 'I have arrived so unashamed but my reflection no longer seems the same. It seems much dimmer now... it seems so dim.' After this verse the chorus is quite despairing, 'you will find me, won't recognise me, i won't recognise myself' - Davey mentions 'his reflection no longer looks the same' - he simply he can't recognise what he's become - in a negative way. 'I've arrived so unashamed, but all my senses no longer seem the same. I can sense everything. My sight's so clear. ' Here h has clearly grown as a person and learnt new things, perhaps from his previous doubts (see first verse), hence 'my senses no longer seem the same'. Now go to the chorus. 'You will find me....etc' takes on a more positive meaning. 'I fought for life, the whole time you were holding me down. You watched me dying. Holding me down, you brought my rebirth. ' This time the chorus takes on a totally positive meaning, the ways of others, and how they have tried to force their views/way of life upon him have brought his rebirth. 'won't recognise me, i won't recognise myslef' because he has grown and moved forward so is like a new person. |
