I can totally relate to the feeling Auerbach depicts in these lyrics. The emptiness existing after the person you love is no longer a part of your life. "Anything goes" perhaps means living out a reckless life following the break up. Though she lives aware of "this sin in her brain", or her irrational choice to leave, she wants nothing to do with him.
Knowing how she feels, he still struggles to get over her and move on. |

Great forward thinking song. Sounds as if Mr. James is speaking to someone who longs or needs change, but for reasons (perhaps insecurity, frightened or just lethargic) isn't quick to jump at opportunities. "You need it, that's for sure. You receive, but always want more." This line depicts a person who takes what they can get, while avoiding any effort.
The lyrics on this album are easily deciphered, yet they hold such powerful meaning. Most of Circuital seems to promote the idea of moving forward in life, not waiting or passing up one's potential and making the most out of everything. |

Agree with halesdd, pretty easy to interpret. This entire album seems to be a reflection of the life Jim James has lived to this point and his perspective on life considering his experiences. Definitely an open and honest reflection of himself and the world around him. As much as he reflects on the past in the lyrics of these ten songs, there's a hopeful longing for a future built on positive construction. |

A soothing delicate tune... This song seems to portray a relationship where the two struggle to remain consistent in their emotions, resulting in communication issues. In the first verse, James seems to be revealing the girl's habit of being content as long as her partner is. He insists that her emotional responses be genuine, rather than "emoting" and "playing the fool."
It's a prime example of one losing themselves in another and how this affects the two as individuals trapped in weighing the highs and lows of the relationship. |

yeah i agree, why no more posts... this song is great, and i agree with highndriving's first interpretation. the girl seems to be leading the guy on and he isnt quite sure what it is they have together. I can totally relate right now, this summer i got involved with someone and as the days wind down before she goes back to VA for college, we dont know what to make of this. i def feel this song is about sex, and how he may have been used, while led to believe it was something more all along. the word in the chorus is usury, and he feels shes gained more than him, if anything he lost out. vtwo is right, the money is a metaphor. she has gotten all that she wants from him, while he is left hoping for more than the physical aspect of the relationship. The line "a little light today, but tomorrow, oh tomorrow..." equals brilliance. she are satisfied, but hes coming to terms with the idea that they have no future. |

A complete social outcry... his obvious disgust in how people every single day are manipulated and taught how to think and are influenced by things such as advertising, upper class, wealth, the media, politics, ya da ya da, it is making the issue of individualism more than a single idea. It is formed by the things that surround us, the influence that is, and Matt Embree points out how easy it is to ignore/disregard this and rather how hard it is to form your own opinions, thoughts and concerns.
He wraps it up brilliantly with the line "Don't be fooled thats just the way that they planned it" The world needs more people who think like this guy, or at least have the voice and mind to lay it all out there... just my thoughts |

i think the word influence sums up this song pretty well. How each and every one of us are affected by our surroundings and other people. He seems to be saying that he has so much to say, but oh it looks as if its already been said. Funny thing is, nobody has taken notice to whats been said, so is it worth repeating? I like this song, it shows that he can actually sing and do it well. I think the meaning of the song fits the title of the album very well too... |

yeah the first comment said it pretty well, thats what i think they were going for, the portrayal of sex and fashion in todays society, and also peoples inablilty to express themselves. rather they rely on what others can see to impress them and not basing anything off of emotion or feeling. They wrap it up by saying its everywhere, the problem is obvious, though we all chooses to ignore it.. "it surrounds, surrounds. We all like to dance around it." Brilliant work from my favorite band, have seen em live twice, but it still isn't enough. If you get the chance to see them, don't pass it up, you will not be disappointed. |

no more comments on this song? it took my awhile to actually check out what anyone had posted on this song, kinda expected more... i really enjoy it, though a downer, its so well put together...as far as meaning, i get the feeling this guy has been trying to get away from somebody because its an unhealthy relationship. However, he cant help but wonder what that person is doing, even to the point of wanting to know where they are and what they're doing (he'll start the car, but he won't start, until you're gone upstairs) wants to make sure thats where they'll be. also the rephrasing of independence day, waiting for that day when he can just put it all behind him... |

Personally, i got a Wuthering Heights feel to this song, would anybody agree? For those of you who've read the book, it would make sense because Catherine and Heathcliff cannot be together at one point, and she's marries another character (Edgar.) But Heathcliff knows he will love her more than anybody and that they should be together.
Also, the part about the ghost.
After Catherine dies, Heathcliff is haunted by her ghost, referring to the line "you are the ever-living ghost." Heathcliff begins to hallucinate (or see her for those of you who believe in ghosts) and it destroys him.
Last theme would be the line "somebody should have warned you." Heathcliff always hide his emotions, making him seem like a dark character. HE was never able to express himself openly, but rather relied on Nelly, the housekeeper, sometimes to explain his feelings.
Maybe not the true meaning of the song, but just my interpretation. Good song... |

i believe this song overall is about depression and not enjoying the life you lead. And he feels it has forced him into a life full of drugs and alcohol. "But whatever ive been getting myself into, maybe has been slicing inches from my waist." Coke use is known to couase substantial weight loss. There an alcohol referrence "its my fist vs the bottle" He will either express his emotions in anger or violence or drink the problems away. Depression, drug and alcohol, and inconsistent moods... thats what i think... |

i have to agree with paraless, this is the best song on the new album, or at least one of them. The guitar work along with the lyrics/vocals are awesome. As far as the meaning, he obviously had a relationship with somebody he cared very much about. However, because of his condition, he would often place certain objectives, such as getting fucked up and such over her, which showed ne respect for her. She left him, and though he wnats her back and wants try again, he understands it was his fault. I can relate... |

hhhmmm, so nobody's posted on this song yet? Prolly the best song off the new cd in my opinion, sounds as if he has been so used to the life hes lived and where hes grown up that even though change is what he seems to need he just cant leave what hes accustomed to.
"i cant get them evicted because ive grown addicted, to laughing through my floors, if they move out i cant live here anymore..." - says it all
And though winter seems unbearable, he says he'll sleep through it and avoid leaving, even though its killing him...

i feel this song is far too good to be compared to another artists work... sure it may have been influenced by morrissey, and sure jesse idolizes him, but this is still the work of brand new. and damn good work... unfortunately which did not make it on the new release. I would be thrilled for an ep containing these song redone (cept for maybe track 9) also, yeah and mamas were the only two which made it on the new cd as sowing season and luca, so hey, why not just just introduce some new ones for this ep.. haha... anyway, tracks 3, 4, 5, and 7 are golden as well |
