| Alanis Morissette – Mary Jane Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Ok I think I should expand on this a little. Mary Jane has connotations of MANY things; yes its a drug reference, yes it could be a reference to A.A. Milne and it could also be a refernce to Mary Jane from Spiderman: the average next-door girl with a number of problems but who puts on a face for everyone else. It can mean ALL of these things especially as the lyrics of this song are so diverse and cover so many topics. Alanis may have had an eating disorder which inspired her to write this, but she's such a talented artist that she can take numerous inspirations and acculmulate them into such a breathtaking song. This is definatly my favourite song of hers and is numer one to be played at my funeral because at some point in their life, can't everyone relate to this? | |

I think that this song is a refernce to Alanis hating the way she should behave in a relationship and being his substitute for everything else that he's craving "I dont want to be a substitute for the smoke youve been inhaling" I also think she refers to the way that she doesn't like men being flase with her in a relationship, all she wants is honesty and love "I dont want to be your idol See this pedestal is high and Im afraid of heights" |
