| A. A. Bondy – When The Devil's Loose Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| It's definitely "sadness of a slave." I thought that was rather obvious, but apparently I was wrong. | |
| Blitzen Trapper – Wild Mountain Nation Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Not surprised no one knows this song, but it's a shame that no one does. This song is incredible. | |
| Oasis – Live Forever Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Definitely one of the best songs of all time. Oasis may be arrogant but they're not stupid. The lyrics are great and it's obvious this is a song of respect and devotion, not just another love song. It's a song about best friends, lovers, family, not a girlfriend. |
| Feist – 1234 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song has been in my head for about 4 or 5 months now, so not all of us are mindless drones that blindly follow everything Apple gives us. Do I like that Apple used the song? I'm not sure. But I AM happy that it means her song is now a top ten hit right now. It's a great song with a good heart. She's clearly not a singer with a vast range, but it doesn't make her worthless. The lyrics are stellar and definitely describe that ennui and melancholy that starts to become entrenched in your 20's and 30's. |
| Rob Crow – Up Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I'm not really surprised that no one commented on Rob Crow because no one knows who he is, but this guy's a genius. He's also the lead singer of Pinback, which is a great job. And this song specifically is beautiful. Great job, Rob, it's a tragedy more people don't know who you are. |
| Alexi Murdoch – All My Days Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song absolutely blew me away when I picked up the album that he did. I had heard of him randomly and just picked it up on a fluke - for some reason, I just thought it LOOKED like a good album. I never, ever questioned that knack for good taste. This album is amazing and this is one of my favorite songs of all time. The skill and talent behind this is incredible. There's something about this that has a Christian tint to me, but I might just be projecting. I think it may be him addressing God but it could also be him addressing a lover. It's very ambiguous to me. |
| Mark Ronson – Stop Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Sorry, but you're all morons if you didn't realize that Mark was a producer and DJ who never intended to make new music, but simply to revamp previously released records. He does a damn good job, too. This is a Smiths song titled "Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before" and the end takes part of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On." No Kim Wilde here. Check out the video for the amazing "Oh My God" for a cameo from Daniel M. |
| The New Pornographers – My Rights Versus Yours Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is a great song and fuses the harmony and melody well. I was just getting into the NP's when this song came my way and it definitely cemented my respect for them. However, the line should be "But kid it's all wasted on me." Which, oddly enough, is my favorite line in the song. |
| Kelly Clarkson – Sober Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is incredible. I hope it can save My December's sales. So does Kelly. |
| Kaiser Chiefs – Oh My God Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Mark Ronson and Lily Allen do an even better job than the original, which is no easy feat at all. What an incredible song. Some of the best lyrics put out in the past few years. |
| The Postal Service – The District Sleeps Alone Tonight Lyrics | 18 years ago |
And don't even try to think that "And the only thing keeping me dry is where I am" has nothing to do with drinking. Again, alcohol and the ubiquitous use of or abstainment from its various incarnations is incredibly significant to DC life. |
| The Postal Service – The District Sleeps Alone Tonight Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I always thought that DC was either Washington or Death Cab. But I think the overall theme and mood of the song fits the city better than the abandonment of the band. And as for "There's definitely an alcohol theme somewhere present," that makes a lot of sense in a city where happy hours and bars are the epicenter of the social scene for people 18-30+. I've lived here for over a year, and alcohol and bars are literally everything to the young crowd here. Gaudy apartments are everywhere, too - Camden Roosevelt, Mass Court, Post Massachusetts Avenue, etc. |
| Imogen Heap – Speeding Cars Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's not about cheating, it's about the various things that happen to you and keeping life in perspective. You idiots need to not be so literal sometimes. And simtech - she's actually saying "It's alright with me." |
| Patrick Park – Something Pretty Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think the "hundred miles in tobacco skin" is simply a metaphor to how weathered he feels and how far he's traveled in his life, whether it be literal or figurative. It's also a great title for an album - I made a mix of songs meant to be a life soundtrack and titled it "A Hundred Miles in Tobacco Skin." As for the OC - I can't remember the exact episode, but as for the scene...It was near the end of Season one, when Summer is working the kissing booth in the lounge/coffee area, and Cohen stands on top of the table and confronts her in front of everyone to either accept him as her boyfriend or lose him forever. Cheesy, but the song made the moment. |
| James Morrison – Wonderful World Lyrics | 18 years ago |
SaveTonight - The video is basically a rather straight-forward, minorly cliche message on how appearances can be deceiving. What appears to be a gorgeous country club full of rich, perfect women is actually an asylum. The women who seem perfect have deep-seeded issues or illnesses, what have you, and one of them refused to take her pills anymore. That said, the song is incredible. I hope he can gain some success State-side in the newest British invasion. Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, Fratellis, and now James Morrison all deserve more credit than they're given in the States. Much better than the rest of the shit that's out right now. |
| Kelly Clarkson – Never Again Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Definitely a disappointment coming off of the incredible album Breakaway, but this is defintely growing on me and I'm looking forward to her next album. Ultimate guilty pleasure, as always. Kelly kills. |
| Better Than Ezra – Desperately Wanting Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I'm proud to be able to call diggit and JustcallmeJ brothers. I'm a Kappa Sigma as well, and I think it's fairly obvious this song is about our fraternity. However, as has been said repeatedly before, you wouldn't know the specific references without actually being initiated. And the song isn't meant to be one dimensional - while the inspiration is painfully obvious, your interpretation is most definitely up to you. Finally - the "both of us" that jaymac had problems with could obviously refer to pledge brothers. Some of my closest relationships are brothers from my pledge class, and I plan for it to stay that way. I'm proud to be a brother of Kappa Sigma and always will be. AEKDB to all of the other brothers defending our great name. |
| Pete Yorn – Crystal Village Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Definitely one of Pete's best songs. He KILLS when he sings it live, as well. What an experience. This song is another one of the classics where the upbeat music betrays the depressing lyrics. I think he's subtle with his pain, and if you didn't pay attention, you wouldn't even pick up on it. Also, nerdy note - As a tradition, whenever I head out to Crystal City on the Metro (or ride by it), I put this song on. |
| Dionne Farris – I Know Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Her singing is so effortless and joyful. This song may be 10 years old, and almost dated, but it still sounds just as amazing as it did. The soul is still in it, and I love her careless vocals. She's over it, and she doesn't care who knows. |
| Patrick Park – Something Pretty Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Agreed that the song is clearly folk and not country, though understand how the less savvy could get confused. Clearly if there's a banjo involved, the song MUST be country! The same logic, then, would apply to Sufjan Stevens and a lot of his work. Stupidity aside, the song is incredible, and easily puts Park on the map through it's OC connections. The song's all about how a man finally realizes his own loneliness and depression has everything to do with his behavior. He can't blame the world anymore when he's the one that shuts them out. Basically, it's my life in a nutshell. |
| Damien Rice – Rootless Tree Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Definitely agree about the part "Fuck you, fuck you, I love you" being the line that changes the entire meaning of the song. If you go to his personal website, the REAL lyrics are posted there. I played this on a road trip and didn't realize how pissed I was at a former employer until I was screaming the lyrics while blasting the song, driving 90 down 295. This song is incredibly cathartic and beautifully written. What a shame that the entire discussion has devolved into his use of the F word. |
| Amos Lee – Colors Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Is it just me or this song wholly evocative of the South? Such a visual song in every way, you can actually see her crying in her summertime dress, sitting on the floor in the back of the house. I don't think it's necessarily a break up. I think he's talking about how her personality has dimmed recently because she's depressed, and he misses the woman he fell in love with. Without her being herself, or even being around, the world is literally less bright. What an incredible lyrical achievement. |
| White Town – Your Woman Lyrics | 18 years ago |
THANK YOU PHATY. I'm getting so sick of people not understanding this song, when I thought several of the meanings were rather obvious. He's not gay. Period. Also, that song is fuckin' sick. I've been obsessed since when it came out and I was only 12. Now I'm almost 23 and I'm still listening to it. |
| Pete Yorn – EZ Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Every time you were expecting to reach out and forgive this I was hardened by the look upon your face That line kills me. This song has been my favorite Pete song for years, and definitely one of the best he's ever written or sang (speaking from a lyrical and vocal perspective). I was literally enraged when they used it on Laguna Beach, especially since it was the same episode they used World Spins Madly On from the Weepies. Two of my favorite songs, absolutely destroyed by one of the shittiest shows on television. |
| Pete Yorn – For Nancy ('Cos It Already Is) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I'm not gonna lie, I don't think you're right. I think this song's all about a friend who's jealous of another relationship, or sick to death of warning someone about their lover. So he finally gives up. Take him home...when your car crash comes, don't be misled. Don't whine about how much life sucks all of a sudden after I've been telling you he's no good for so long. And I've been listening to Pete since senior year of high school - five or six years now. I just saw him last week at the 9.30 club, and he was as amazing as always. |
| Damien Rice – Cannonball Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I've been listening to Damien Rice for over three years now, but I can still remember the exact moment I heard this song. I was making a mixed CD for a friend of mine, and was scrolling through a list of Damien songs I had downloaded a while back. For some reason, I hadn't really listened to Cannonball yet, and I started it on a whim, mostly just intrigued by the title. I was LITERALLY hooked within five or six notes. The guitar alone sucked me in, and the lyrics only served to punch me in the stomach. I have, no joke, listened to this song at least 6 or 700 times since then (spring 2005). Easily one of my favorite songs of ALL TIME, and it just goes to show how amazing Damien is that he just keeps winning accolades. |
| Sufjan Stevens – For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I wasn't judging you for inflicting your own meanings onto the song, and, as a result, judging those who refused to see your Christian undertones. I was mentioning that if you were actually literate, thinking people, you would notice that Sufjan had publicly stated that the song was not, in fact, Christian in its themes. Granted, you can extrapolate to make it about Jesus, but it wouldn't be the correct meaning of the song. Go ahead and judge me, it just makes you even worse Christians. We all know only God can truly sit in the Throne of Judgment. |
| Damien Rice – Lonelily Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think you guys have over-simplified the meaning of the song. I think what's really going on here is that he's so horrendously lonely and emotionally depraved that the sleeps with an ex who cheated on him simply to feel some sort of connection again. Hence these lyrics -- "I gave me away I could have knocked off the evening But I lonelily loomed her into my bone." He gave himself away because he betrayed himself by actually sleeping with her. End of story. |
| Patrick Park – Life is a Song Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is absolutely amazing. Park does some amazing work and isn't as celebrated as he should be. I was incredibly proud and happy to see him get the final song on the final episode of the OC last night. People take far, far too much for granted. Celebrate the concept of being alive, of good health, of friends that love you. |
| Sufjan Stevens – For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Can't you people even fucking read? IT'S NOT ABOUT JESUS. Yes, he has written songs earlier that had religious undertones. This isn't one of them. There's even an explanation provided by him at his own concert, and you just can't help but push Christianity in every vein. Let it go, for once -- this song is not. about. Jesus. |
| Sarah McLachlan – World On Fire Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song couldn't be more important in a time where Americans spend so much money on themselves and don't really seem to care about anything else happening in the world. We went apeshit over Katrina and still obsess over it, but there has never been a similar outpouring for people in other countries. The only event even comparable would be the Tsunami of 2005. Sarah's song is incredible, but is made so much more meaningful by her video. She wrote the song as a response to September 11th. I'm so glad she, as always, strayed away from the mainstream crap like Toby Keith, and addressed the real need to look after each other and to help those less fortunate. Such an incredible effort. I will always love her for this. |
| Imogen Heap – Hide and Seek Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I feel like it's pretty obvious that the song's about the aftermath of a hurtful break-up. From her various references to his (or her) lying to the more blatant indications that a house and relationship are being left behind, this is one of her more foreward songs. Guess that just goes to show how abstract her other songs are! |
| Travis – Love Will Come Through Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Absolutely amazing song. I was listening to this back in 2005, and I think it was more a message to an ex lover that is now a friend. Love is waiting on you -- we didn't work out, but something eventually will. |
| The Weepies – World Spins Madly On Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Also, it's "slept right through the dawn." And "let the day go by." |
| The Weepies – World Spins Madly On Lyrics | 19 years ago |
Isn't it possible that it's a lost love, best friend, or even close family member that died? I don't think there's just one explanation to the song, and that's why so many people can identify with it. This could be losing the love of your life because of a mistake. This could be waking up with a hangover and realizing that the best times of your life are gone because you didn't make the effort to realize how lucky you are. Or it could be your soulmate (however you see them) has died and your life has stopped moving as a result, even though "the world spins madly on." |
