Queens of the Stone Age – Tangled up in Plaid Lyrics 15 years ago
It's about their former bassist, Nick Oliveri. His exit from the band was based on personal reasons, and Josh was very broken up about having to kick him out as they'd been playing together since before Kyuss formed. The title is a reference to Nick's punk rock musical leanings.

Sorry I don't have a link, but I remember reading an interview with Josh where he said he was in a really dark place while they were writing/recording this album because of the falling out with Nick. He said that the mood of most of the songs reflected this. It doesn't seem surprising that one of the songs on the album addresses Nick's parting directly.

Frank Zappa – It Just Might Be A One-Shot Deal Lyrics 16 years ago
It sounds like it might be about a too-heavy acid trip, but Zappa didn't do drugs, and this doesn't sound especially mocking. I'd be interested to know what he had in mind when he wrote these lyrics.

Toadies – Dollskin Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, there are some messed up interpretations of this song, although I can't blame people given the theme of so many other Toadies tunes.

My first impression was that this was about ghosts in some way (as mentioned by DrRock), but it seems kind of literal. Regardless of all that, I find it to be their most beautiful song.

Ween – Mr. Richard Smoker Lyrics 18 years ago
Super catchy, racist song about a black gay dude (not asian, as dick shivers suggested).

Runs through black stereotypes such as smoking menthols, eating dark meat (they very clearly say DARK meat, not DOG meat. they land pretty hard on the R in the word), drinking cognac (hennessey seems to be the favorite of most black rappers).

The gay references are pretty blaring and don't need much explaining. I love this band, but sometimes their lyrics are bafflingly offensive and immature.

Frank Zappa – He's So Gay Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a fun song celebrating unabashedly flamboyant homosexuality. Written to honor Zappa's multi-talented keyboardist/saxophonist/vocalist, Bobby Martin, who was in the band throughout the 80s and was included in the fantastic lineup of musicians during the final 1988 tour.

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
Hallelujah = Orgasm. This song is simply about sex. All references, biblical or otherwise, are simply metaphors and allusions to sex. Don't try to read into it any differently.

Knowing that, it's an incredibly well written song as the tone, pacing, and melody matches perfectly with the subject matter. While many believe JB's version to be the greatest, I find he quite butchered Leonard Cohen's masterpiece. His vocal wanking acrobatics (not to mention his castration of the original lyrics) don't match in the slightest with the intended mood of the piece, and instead turn it into a cheap teenage campfire song.

Jeff Buckley – Lilac Wine Lyrics 19 years ago
The song was originally composed by James A. Shelton, and from what I can gather (although I may be wrong) was originally performed by Eartha Kitt, however the Nina Simone version of this song is far and away the greatest. Buckley, like with all of his covers, does a passable but underwhelming job. In Buckley's own words:

"I've only heard Nina Simone's...And that's the only one that matters. There's one by Eartha Kitt. There's one by Elkie Brooks, which I've never, ever heard. There's another one. They've done it, but Nina does it best. That's the end all of it. That's the be all end all version. She's the king."

He's not just being modest. If you haven't heard the Nina Simone version, I suggest you have a listen as it's incredibly moving. I find Buckley's version to be listlessly void of substance. Simone's rendition is far more rich and down to earth.
