Wilco – One By One Lyrics 15 years ago
Love this song. It makes me feel a weird mix of sadness and happiness. Its by Woody Guthrie but he never performed it.

Wilco – Via Chicago Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song, but the live version is just so incredible. I'm not sure about the lyrics, but especially the in the live version the emotion is amazing. I love how it builds up into almost cacophony, but then returns to the simple melody. I love that tension and release.

I think this is a beautiful, sad song. I love it.

Andrew Bird – Armchairs Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the idea of a "crooked bow" being a violin bow. I never thought of it that way. But then again I am not a violinist. But it makes a lot of sense for Andrew Bird to be singing about. The first time I heard the song I thought he was saying a "crooked bone" which I think is an interesting image even though its not the correct lyric.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Communist Daughter Lyrics 17 years ago
The first part makes me think of an old photograph. Like the old black and white ones that they hand tinted (I think that's what its called when they add in the colors by painting with dye).

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song. Narrow stairs over all is a great album. I like it almost as much as Transatlanticism.

I honestly really like the intro because it slowly builds up. Its not just the same thing played over and over. I don't find it boring. If you're not patient enough for the intro, I guess you can just listen to the radio edit -shrug-

I also like the fact that this song at first sounds like an innocent boy wants girl song, but as you start to examine it more you realize that it's pretty creepy. It kind of goes with the story of the song and how love can turn into something dark.

Lundylow: You refer to The Island: The Landlord's Daughter by the Decemberists, yes? :'D

This song comes on the radio SO much and I HATE it.

Cake – Short Skirt/Long Jacket Lyrics 17 years ago
In a way, I think it's somewhat of a parody of all those songs that talk about the girl they want. I get that feeling from the fact that the lyrics are kind of silly such as "fingernails that shine like justice". So it's about an impossibly awesome girl with all of the great qualities, regardless of conflicting attributes.

Radiohead – The Tourist Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song. I love how it's really slow and mellow and the lyrics are saying "slow down". I also love how... final it seems. I went to a first screening of a film by some film students and they used this song near the end of their movie, so I will always associate it will things ending.

It sounds like Bradley is vomiting garbage or something in this song

I LOVE this cover. It's a Killers song, but sounds distinctly Tally Hall. Which I think is the point of a cover.

I love his songs with spanish in them. He's very obviously not a native speaker. He pronounces everything so.... white. Haha.

I think it's about dreams, and who you really are in your subconscious, with the double entendre of masturbation :)

The Fratellis – Whistle for the Choir Lyrics 18 years ago
Yes, I agree with MishaLove that everyone has pretty much covered the meaning.

However, I think the part where he says 'So if you're lonely, why'd you say you're not lonely?' is referring to the girl saying that she's not single, even though she is. She would have told him that to avoid directly denying him, and he's wondering why.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez – Deus Ex Machina Lyrics 18 years ago
Okay here is a very ROUGH translation of the song. I'm not a native speaker and have limited vocabulary, but since no one has translated it yet, here it goes:
Queen, queen of my life
Fill, my kingdom of happiness
has bright in her sight
(something about beauty)

the hours are long (something along these lines, this is not exact)
when you are not at my side
(no idea)
the love that has professed

reaching to understand
that you are the queen of my life
and on your head i place
the crown (?)

the hours are short
if I have you well around
and the flower shrivels(?)
when it hears your sigh

you look like a (?) (I think this line should read "tu miras como un filo)
that pierces very profoundly
you controll so my world
adjoins(?) the queen of my life

so yeah, just reading through those lyrics there are a lot of mistakes, and there are no accent marks. Also another note is that the lyrics have a lot of "ita"s in it, which is like a suffix of endearment in Spanish.

But yeah, that's my undoubtly horribly incorrect translation, but you kind of get the gist.

Islands – Rough Gem Lyrics 18 years ago
Er, no. That is completely wrong. The song is very obviously about diamonds. Diamonds are a girl's best friend. Not coke. If it was about cocaine, why would there be references about miners in Africa. The part about the miners is referring to how the Europeans create the cities and mines in Africa and employ Africans who work very hard with little pay. Whenever there's a new deposit found, it's the Europeans who benefit, not the workers.

And on the topic of songs not meaning anything, I think it is acceptable. Sometimes a poem/lyrics will be about sounds and rhythm as opposed to meanings. But this particular song is obviously meaningful.

The Mars Volta – Vicarious Atonement Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the album has a lot to do with religion, but not necessarily that it is bad. I think it means that with religion should come spirituality, not blind faith.

But anyway. Vicarious atonement means atonement through another person. In the medieval ages rich people payed monks to do their praying for them so that they wouldn't have to bother doing it themselves but would still reach "salvation". I think this song is critizing religions hate towards other religions (especially how a lot of Christians hate other religions). The river Ganges is a river in India, one that is very very sacred to Hindu people. A lot of people have their ashes put into the Ganges after they die. I think there are some other ceremonies or something that has to to with Hinduism. Anyway, "in the River Ganges God damns my name" is my favorite line. I think it's saying that like, some people would believe that God condemns the people of other religions.

But yeah. Love this song. It's so emotional and almost passive agressive-sounding to me.

The Mars Volta – Viscera Eyes Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think that the album is saying that religion is crap. I think it is focusing more on how people are so obsessed with their religion that they cannot accept that other people believe other things. I think it could also be criticizing people who blindly follow, saying that religious figures and symbols mean nothing if you believe without reason. I also think it could be about how people fight over beliefs and cannot see the problems that they should really be dealing with.
