Well my impression of the song (and I could be very wrong here) is that it's about modernisation of society and how this modernisation compromises ethics. Governments are doing whatever it takes to build their nations, even at the expense of the welfare of citizens of other nations or even at the expense of their own citizens. As long as it works and seems pragmatic it doesn't matter how much danger it does or might do since the end product will be what they aimed to achieve. "don't matter which way we're facing so long as we're rolling forwards you'd better look out below relentlessly and without tiring we're gonna keep rolling forwards here we go" I think that pretty much sums up the song. Compromising ethics as long as it works for you. Again, I could be very wrong though. |

| I definitely agree with godscoward that this song is about frustration, hopelessness and apathy and needing a change in order to move on from a certain shituation. It's my favourite track on Sharing Space. | |

| The line that says "you got some porn and raise and videos too, " should really be "you got some polaroids and videos too" | |

| I believe what I've said is kinda in line with xen0nex's comments too. | |

| The lines "He was reaching out to touch me" and "I was reaching out to touch him" makes me think of Michaelangelo's painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. This song makes me think of God creating Adam, sending him to live on earth and then Adam finds that his paradise isn't so perfect after all, of course after sin was committed. Just my take on it though. I'm just getting familiar with this song and it's my initial interpretation. I kinda expect it to change soon though. | |

| What does the name "Dougal" have to do with this song? | |

I do agree with pharo that it's probably some words of advice that Judith Marie gave Maynard and to take it a bit further I think she was just warning him about hardships he'll face in life and people treating him like shit. Hence "Life will have its way with your pride, son" and "Thunder blowing up your horizon". Changes come. Keep your dignity. Take the high road. Take it like a man. I think in those four lines she reminds him not to sink to the level of others. |

Maybe what he means by "number five" and "number two" is $5 and $2. The lines before these say "If I get my hands on a dollar bill Gonna buy a bottle and drink my fill." From this I get that he's probably in some far off land with no way to get home at the moment and maybe by "If I get my hands on a number five Gonna skin that little girl alive" he could mean that if he gets his hand on $5 he's gonna buy a prostitute and with the $2 he could afford to make another trip home. I'm not sure about this at all, I'm just saying it's a possibility and I could be totally wrong about this. |

I agree totally with Eternalv0ice. Music can be interpreted any way you want it to be. I remember watching a live performance of this beautiful song on YouTube and Maynard said this song is about anal sex. I don't know if he was joking or not but to me this song has a totally different meaning. I can relate to this song because I've found myself in a state of depression for quite a while and it seemed as though bad moments in my life just kept repeating over and over, to the point where I just know what will happen next. Also the "Seems like I'm slipping into a dream within a dream" for me signifiies numbness of being in a situation. When you dream you don't feel pain hence you are numb and the dream can just be about finding the situation beyond your control and because it just keeps happening over and over again you just learn to become numb and accept it. Also on the issue of Karl, it's odd that you should insult Karl and call him gay, while being Tool fans. If you're so blatantly homophobic how do you listen to songs such as 4 Degrees, Prison Sex and Stinkfist? Yeah, sure these songs have deeper meanings than their names suggest but how can you be homophobic and love a band that chooses to us produce such suggestive lyrics? |
