| Damien Rice – Cold Water Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Wow, I was surprised seeing so many comments on a song with just a few lyrics. You all explained such different interpretations, it's really a great song, that causes that. I even liked the Titanic idea. For me as a foreigner (so my english is not the best) I've always understood the lyrics as a song for a girl. Of course that is, because in Damien Rice context, nearly every song can be read this way. So I thought and still think, that "you" in this song is a girl and not god. When he invokes god it is just another cry for help and he propably could have said "Man, can you hear me?". Cold water is around me, I'm feeling so alone and only holding your hand saves me from drowning. To love one's daughter (you) allows me to hold your hand, to not let you go, to hinder you in your way. (I know it makes less sense if it's "no one's daughter".) But he also says "allow me that", not "allows me that". So the daughter can't be the subject of this sentence and the call "allow me that" is a sentence for itself, directed to the daughter and not directed to the Lord, or could this be? However, an amazing song, so heartfilling. |

| Damien Rice – Me, My Yoke and I Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Uh, I can't agree, that this is the best song on the 9 album. If not by Damien, I wouldn*t give this so much regard. I don't like it much, because I don't like the sound. Now as I can see, its about animalistic sex, I can follow the reason for that aggressive sound, but I'm still not warm with it. You helped me a lot with the meaning, but I have still one question. What is the line "me, my yoke and I gonna make us choke"? What is a yoke? |

| Damien Rice – Dogs Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Of course, it's about jealousy, but not total. I like the interpretation that two guys fall in love with the same girl in the morning, fight for her (or just wait for her decision) during day and only one gets "it" from her in the evening. I would think, that the dog (the losing one) only gets in contact with her by being a friend of the other one. But it is predetermined that our dog will lose, because he has no chance against a wolf. How else can the wolf give and the dogs get from him? She is so idealistic to him, dressed in white like an angel, moving not less than the world. He is achy fell in love, but he will survive it for sure. For me it means, that he is quite to young, but time will help. ;) What the song is telling me is, that it's better to fall in love than not, even if unfourtunately. You're still alive when you love, your world is in move. You only lost one day, not your life. So i don't see it as pessimistic as Rastopo and I don't think, Damien is unable to get the lady, he wants. I don't think, that all songs of 9 refer to one girl. And girls, every good boy carrys those feelings inside of him, but we aren't artists at all like Damien Rice and that's why we love, how he can express those feelings. |

| Damien Rice – Animals Were Gone Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Wow, another beautiful song. I agree it's about a girl who left the house for a long time, but forever? Maybe she has to make a jouney or wants to live some months in a foreign country or somewhat. But maybe she needs a break from him or left him in general, but they don't know yet for sure what it is. All he feels is, that he misses her. His thoughts are with her. And it is the genious in the details, that Damien doesn't say, "when I close my eyes", but "when I cover my eyes, all I see is you". Because who covers his eyes is the one, who is left "in places of despair". It is, however, a sad song. Because you can ask yourself, how often do the animals come back, when they are gone? And if they come back, do they still stay the same? Not so often I think. The song wants to give hope, but maybe leaves him in despair. |

| Damien Rice – Coconut Skins Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Sure, you can read verse 3 and 4 as a permission (or manual or instruction) from Damien. You may hold her eggs, although your basket has a hole and you may wait for ages, because the busy people get old in the same time and they become the same coal one day. But you can*t (at least I can't) read verses 1 and 2 as a permission. They say - and I agree with letterstonoelle - don't tell her everything (also don't be too honest) and don't let others decide for you. But I also can follow Wootfests opinion that in the chorus it's said: hey man, I'm doing nothing, so what? God is by my side. Of course, people who would here this, would answer: "Go working, young man, and don't be blasphemous!" - And that's both funny. :) What the four verses maybe have together is, that a person tries to do something, but doesn't know, what's right, what's honest or what's to do at all. And then he says, for now you can warm your ass on an alien chimney. Time will tell. No man with courage ever waited his whole life. It comes the point when you crack the coconut and that won't be easy, anyway, but is always rewarded. |

| Damien Rice – Accidental Babies Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
In the beginning he says, that they "ignored each others happy plans". Then they use (or used, you can't know for sure, nerdy scarlett) cushions to cover the you know what. Why are they in "a place, where no one knows, what we have done"? And finally, is their flesh disregarded (or does their flesh disregard the lack of space? I don't really understand this part, because I'm german.)? To me these are all indications for an affair, but of course, thats not the main question of this song. I'm asking me, if she is really together (in a relationship) with her new boyfriend, because the singer asks, if she comes "together ever with him". Did she only fall in love with another guy and is still looking for her prince charming, seeing him in the other one? Sure, if she is not toether with him, she could not get an accidental baby, but it needs only "one of us" having an accidental baby to end this dream. So the singer maybe cannot understand, why she looks for a better one, although they were happy together. Well, it is, however, an absolutely great song. The way, Damien sings his lyrics, shows all the great feelings of this song. It has a good effect, that he doesn't whisper lines like "If so, be free" or "What about me", but he speaks them clearly and quiet and so sad, it's just beautiful. Who doesn't feel his own heart, when he hears "If so, be free / If not, leave him for me", can not be human. I really like that much. |
