To me this song is about someone who is so passionate about living up to their own ideals that they don't even care if it's even the kind of life that would make them the happiest. This person does know that there are other possibilities, other paths to take, and that they could make him/her actually happier than her current one. All the time within this person rages a battle of two voices - the one speaking for their current path and the one who is horrified by it. But self-respect means more to the person than happiness, and they know they couldn't respect themselves would they stray away from their path. So (s)he will live a somewhat sad life, alone - as that seems to be a part of her ideals - to be independent and some sort of a loner. (S)he knows (s)he can't escape from the path (s)he has driven him/herself to take, but in a way (s)he kind of enjoys his/her fate. |

To me this is a song similar in theme to Breathe no more, which to me was about discovering you'd been living in a lie - having not known themselves, or more like lying to themselves they're their ideal person. However this song is more positive than Breathe no more - where BNM was about not refusing to accept the truth though it's very clear, Away from me seems to be about the will to truly know yourself now, escape the lie you had created and live the rest of your life as who you really are. |

To me this song is about how for an amount of time you saw yourself more like who you wanted to be rather than who you really were. ("I've been looking in the mirror for so long That I've come to believe my souls on the other side.") Now that you've found out your true self, you're sad, you keep denying it, somehow you preferred living in ignorance, lying to yourself - you were happier back then. But the truth is so clear to you now that you can't turn back anymore. ("Take a breath and I try to draw from my spirits well. Yet again you refuse to drink like a stubborn child.") I love it how much of Evanescence's songs can be interpret in so many different ways. |
