i think you could take it two ways. first way, about a relationship, maybe the protangonists broke it off because they thought they were too young (or one of them did, and if they ask, he'll go back, and then realizes the other is a coward if the reason they broke it off was because they were young). so it might be that its a song about trust or something. The other way I can interpret it is that its about progress and marching towards whereever society is headed. If we keep walking, we'll stay up. If we start paying attention to the details of what is going on, we'll go slowly slowly down. However, if realizes we could go back. He isn't buying into that march forward into "progress" could be what we need. If someone asks, we could could back ( and reexamines values and what's good and bad or something). The whole age thing is talking about how everyone talks about the youth being the promise of tomorrow, but never giving them any real responsibility in society. He's saying people are cowards if they think youth only want to go "forward." If asked, they'd go back and change the world. maybe?? |

I love this song. But for me, it sounds like he is apologizing and he's making excuses because he is sorry things have changed for reasons he doesn't know (or remember, it seems like he got old and hasn't been clued in on all that has changed). The beat would suggest he is torn up about it and the only way to express is through explaining why he's acting like an ass, or that things aren't 'as they used to' and that is why life isn't up to par, or at least where they once were. He sounds tired, like he woke up, and realized he used to be different and more energized. I don't think he wants to break up or anything, rather he's apologizing for not being what he used to be. |

Funny, I didn't notice this song when I first listened to the album, but I dated a guy who was always commenting about "his list" and how I met almost all the things on it, yaddayadda. He also said he bookmarked me way before I was clued into his existence on the planet, as if he had a list of girls he was interested in. So that's what the "my list" reference means to me...but in actually I think it's about loss or staving it off. It's about a guy who cares a lot, but isn't able to get that message across ...it's always on his list, she's always on his list of things to get to , there are things to say to her, but he never gets to it. And she got/gets fed up and doesn't track with him. But she should have known/she know that he's always thinking about her and always wanting to express things...but couldn't/can't. And she wasn't/isn't able to get that message and doubts. And now, probably due to their poor system of communication, he's encouraging her not to give up on him. There still seems like a lot of hope in the song that'll get to where they want to be. It's not like their relationship is over. I like that line " when you rock and roll with me, there's no where I'd rather be." That's a sign it's all about love?? |

woops, i mean "at least theologically" And even if we don't like the whole 'it's about Jesus" sentiment, just think of other people who sacrifice to love people ...Mother Theresa, Ghandi, other people who do incredible things that aren't directed towards themselves like the person who volunteers at a soup kitchen or the nurse who baths the forgotten invalid. The acts of "radical" love defined as radical because they drive one to want to swim across lake michigan just to be in the presence of the person who showed them that kind of love, is a great subject of a song. Going up on a tree or giving away the joy of a family to touch someone so deeply is a theme of Christian thought, but it can be extended to outside a solely christian narrative and applied universially. As in, there exists a love so powerful in this world that changes people. at least, that's how i read into sufjan's song. |
