Blind Guardian – Battalions Of Fear Lyrics 15 years ago
Blind Guardian started out as a thrash band, and this is a thrash song in the vein of Megadeth (thematically - I'd say lyrically but the guys' english wasn't quite perfect when they wrote this, obviously).

Blind Guardian – Majesty Lyrics 15 years ago
Actually, the "Don't fall in panic/just give me the thing that I need or I kill/Don't run away for what have I done" verse is more reminiscent of when Boromir tries to take the ring from Frodo.

Battlelore – Alatar - Forgotten Wizards II Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is (obviously) about Alatar, one of the original Istari who journeyed to Middle Earth. When Saruman (Curumo) returned west, Alatar didn't. It's unknown what happened to him.

Iron Maiden – Lord of Light Lyrics 16 years ago
"Lord of Light" is a collection of related short stories by Roger Zelazny, telling a larger story focusing on a messiah/god-figure called Mahasamatman.

Mahasamatman (or 'Sam') leads a campaign against the established gods of the world.

Blind Guardian – Somewhere Far Beyond Lyrics 16 years ago
Specifically, the first two books - "The Gunslinger" and "The Drawing of the Three". IIRC this album had come out shortly after The Drawing of the Three was published.

Sabbat – Blood For The Blood God Lyrics 16 years ago
This is obviously based on Warhammer Fantasy. "Blood for the Blood God" is the battlecry of the followers of Khorne. Blood for the Blood God. Skulls for the Skull Throne.

Demons and Wizards – Seize The Day Lyrics 16 years ago
At first I thought this song was about The Dark Tower also, but the more I read the comments and then the lyrics over the more I believe it's an LOTR song.

"Soon I will reach the western shore" is an obvious clue, but it can be applied to TDT also. Same goes for "The tower knows who you are". However, "Far behind in the distance lie the fires of doom" - the Crack of Doom where the Ring was forged and destroyed. Also, "The road goes on" is very reminiscent of Bilbo's song as well as "tomorrow I'll be gone" (i.e. gone with the elves). "Now there's one thing left to do" also points to LOTR - finishing Bilbos book or maybe heading west across the sea?

Also, "Keep the one that has passed on and leave the others behind" - the breaking of the Fellowship when Frodo left with Sam? Or perhaps taking Bilbo with him across the western sea? Or maybe it references Gandalf, who in a way did "pass on" after fighting with the Balrog.

Tricky.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 19 years ago
Robert Plant's own explanation of the lyrics was that it concerned "a woman getting everything she wanted without giving anything back". The lyrical inspiration came to Plant by his search for spiritual perfection and a key influence was the book Magic Arts in Celtic Britain by Lewis Spence, which Plant had recently read; it contained references to May Queens, pipers, and "bustling hedgerows."

Blind Guardian – Under The Ice Lyrics 19 years ago
Perhaps it's about the Inquisitions. "She's fairly safe inside the fire" (Burned at the stake)

"They'll torture her soul
And they'll torment her heart
But won't change her mind"

Blind Guardian – Another Holy War Lyrics 19 years ago
Actually, I'm fairly sure it's about Frank Herbert's Dune series.

Jesus proclaimed himself to be the son of God, and never claimed to be God himself.

However, Paul Atreides (Muad'Dib) becomes the Messiah of the Fremen, goes blind and yet still sees ("You won't believe the blind can see") and then proclaims himself God-Emperor.

He also leads "another holy war" (the first being supposedly the Butlerian Jihad).

Of course, the crucifixion parts do point to Christ - I think perhaps the song is a comparison of the Biblically-inspired Dune books and the actual story of Jesus.
