Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain Lyrics 12 years ago
This song reminds me of my relationship with my mother whom I love dearly but am never able to say so.
Almost all the lines to his mother are in response to her warnings as he was growing up from a child to a man - I look at the lines of being but a blink of an eye in her belly...that's nine months - hardly a blink but in the scope of his life now, it was but a speck in time. And I look at the line of telling her not to worry, "she's got a garden we're planing together". His mother has always been looking out for him and he's lost his way plenty of times, "I lost it, all of the fear of the Lord I was given "

The lyrics above are wrong - VERY WRONG. They mislead anyone reading and trying to interpret it. The primary error is this:

First chorus is correct:
Sons are like birds, flying upward over the mountain
Second chorus is wrong. It is:
Sons could be birds, taken broken up to the mountain
Third chorus is wrong. It is:
Sons are like birds, flying always over the mountain

With those chorus corrections, it's a progression from boyhood to manhood and back again. Flying always over the mountain is what he reveals at the end to indicate that, hey, it's a natural thing for sons to do this, don't worry. Remember the night that the dog had her pups...I don't read too much into the absolute literal reference to it other than that she cried til morning. I assume...the dog died, the pups survived. So, in retrospect, may each sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten.

I listen to this song and I know my mother has always, like many mothers, nagged the heck out me to do what's right. And I've always thought I've known better. I've been wrong, I've been right. But it's taken me to have my own two children to understand why she cared so much. I'll end with this then,
Mom, I love you.

Stars – Barricade Lyrics 18 years ago
Definitely football related. Barricades being the structure that separates the fans from the pitch. Drunken fans would sometimes storm the climb the barricades only to be met by police - hence the pigs with tear gas. Meeting her on a Saturday which is when football is played in the UK. Sunday is for the NFL.

Iron & Wine – Jesus the Mexican Boy Lyrics 19 years ago
oops, hit add too soon:
As I was saying, the last two lines remind me of the parable of the return of the prodigal son.

Iron & Wine – Jesus the Mexican Boy Lyrics 19 years ago
I was just listening to the song again - and I keep drawing a parallel to Christ's teachings (not so much Christ himself). Anyway, the following lines:
"Born in a truck on the fourth of July,
Gave me a card with a lady naked on the back
...
Fireworks blooming above in the sky,

I never knew I was given the best one from the deck." I just realised that Jesus, born on July 4th, is celebrating his birthday with "fireworks blooning above in the sky", and rather than receive gifts, he gives away the best card of the deck...assuming his possessions are limited (i.e. no shoes).
