I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds.But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. |

To me this song reminds me to stop doing pointless non productive things. Like how I might go real far in something, but it's all pointless in the end. And the only way to get away from it would be to take a big fall which prevents me from doing it at all. The parts about how time is a valuable thing and it just slips away really speaks to me. I don't really listen to the "relationship" lyrics :) |

Meaning in Reservoir Dogs I think that in the film Reservoir Dogs, Quentin wanted the song to mean that Mr.Pink was the only professional there. Mr.Pink had a bad feeling about the job (Well I don't know why I came here tonight). Hes got clowns to the left of him and jokers to the right and he's the only professional. Nobody else is acting like a professional. Mr.White's judgement is swayed by his personal relationship with Joe and Mr.Orange. Mr.White immediately rules out Joe as the rat because they "go a long way back". Then he rules out Mr.Orange out too because they bonded together prior to the job and because Mr.Orange took a bullet. He also tells Mr.Orange his name, beats up Mr.Pink and nearly picks a fight with Mr.Blonde. Mr.Blonde isn't a professional because he killed the people in the bank and needlessly tortures the cop. He also taunts Mr.White. Joe isn't a professional because he's too hot headed and doesn't back down to Mr.White and try and talk things over. Nice Guy Eddy isn't a professional because he makes the situation worse by pointing the gun at Mr.White. It might have been better if he stood between them and tried to calm things down. He also does not initially believe that there was a setup. Mr.Pink on the other hand is the first to realize that there was a setup. He doesn't trust anyone. He encourages Mr.White to suspect everyone, even himself. He takes the diamonds and stashes them. He doesn't let his personal feelings get in the way of his job. He works on logic and doesn't tip waitresses because society tells him to. He's the only one who stays out of the gunfight at the end and the only one not "acting like a n****r". I conclude that Mr.Pink is the one who's stuck in the middle of a bunch of clowns and jokers. |

To me this song is about the boys breaking up for a while there. They are indeed incomplete without each other. However there are disturbing homosexual undertones. I say this because it looks like they are singing to each other int he video. Nice come back song. Lifting homosexual rumours. |
