um, okay, i have to disagree with pretty much all of you in saying that this song has absolutely nothing to do with a movie. you have to think of it in the sense of the entire album (which is actully meant to be listened to in reverse- i mean starting at this time imperfect and ending with miseria cantare). throughout the album, the narrator comes to a resolution, and so the album needs to be looked at as a story. this is a love song. celluloid means to be shapeless or to be easily shaped, and having the song called "this celluloid dream" suggests that the narrator feels trapped this helpless situation, much like a dream. the first verse describes how he is deeply in love with someone ("calling tears from deep inside, oh you're so exquisite"), and how the feeling is not reciprocated ("all midnight eyes read 'vacancy'"). he wishes he could stay with her, but its just a visit (if it is a dream, it is not permanent). the situation is "twisted", and its "twisting" him, so to speak. the second verse elaborates on the first verse, and how this loved one is indifferent ("i begged 'may i cut in?' but they never stopped playing 'their' song"). they are happy together ("of a joyous song they sing"), while he is left, alone ("on a freezing note, i resonate"), "i resonate" meaning he understands why. i find the pre-chorus to be self-explanatory, just reitterating the theme of the song. in the chorus, he describes how infatuated he is with her, and how he wants it to end ("onto the melting boy and melt away") but he can't let go. the third verse i had a little trouble with. i believe it has to do with the fact that this is just a dream, or that it was just a dream that he and his lover would be together. he wants the dream to never end ("praying this will never end"). "static" means stationary, and "pallor" means to have an unnatural lack of skin color, so i think that means that he wants it to be real, but is brought back into a shocking reaity ("in static pallor i realized i never began"). that leaves the bridge. simple enough. "all the colors, upon leaving, all will turn to grey" means that, once this dream has ended, all that will be left is a cold reality, referring back to the third verse. to me, it all fits in with the story the album tells, and i makes a lot of sense to me, but afi writes their songs so broad so that it has a seperate meaning to each individual, so tell me what you think. |

| i don't really see the point in everyones fighting... anyway, here's what i think of the song (seeing as thats the purpose of the site): i think it is about a guy in a very serious relationship, and it comes to a point where he is obsessive over this girl. he is paranoid and thinks she is cheating on him, so he does everything he can to find out. this eventaully drives her away ("there was no one to kiss"). at this point, he realizes his paranoia and that he has driven her away ("but at the right place at the right time, i'll be dead wrong and you'll be just fine"), and so he waits for her to come back ("it will have been worth it to stand in line"). but thats just me... | |
