That's exactly how I interpret it.

I'm 98% sure that he says "tin-types", as in the format of photographs during the mid-1800s. To me the song sounds like it is about a love that endures throughout history, or maybe a reincarnation of love?

Oh, and the Our Father is NOT a Catholic prayer alone. It's in the New Testament, so it is a Christian prayer. Us Catholics don't have it all to ourselves. :-)

Here's what I think it means:
Since it was written for Johnny Cash and Cash did have a faith struggle throughout his life, I think this is definitely a song written to portray Christian themes.
Generally, this song is about expressing that the singer is a mess and can't make it without God. He doesn't have a relationship with Him, perhaps, but he'll wait (although, for the record, it's not necessary).
"In Your tears, In Your blood"--Referencing the passion of Christ and His sacrifice so that we may experience a relationship with God.
"In your Fire and in Your flood"--I immediately thought of the story of Elijah, when he goes up and the Lord says he will pass by him. Natural calamities occur, but God is really in the still small voice that Elijah later hears. The fire could also reference the fiery furnace of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego or the fiery column that led the Hebrews to Canaan every night during the Exodus. And "Your flood" could just mean the flood, saying that even in this seemingly horrible event, the singer still knew that God was in control.
"I hear You laugh, I hear You sing"--This relates to the previous lines and says that in all of those things, the singer feels the presence of the Lord.
What a great song. :-)
