| I don't exactly think this song is about a faltering relationship...I think it's about the general hardships of life and how fate just has a strange way of fucking people over (like love). He describes a ship almost to land and then it sinks, basically implying that anything can happen. The verse that Jesse sings "but the wrong words will strand you, come off course while you sleep, sweep your boat out to sea or dash to bits off the reef" implies that you can control what you do or say, but if what you do is wrong, it can really end up hurting yourself or others. I love this song so much. It's so strong. It's really emotional for me because this story is too much like one that happened with two of my friends; everything is the same except their accident wasn't caused by a drunk driver. This is one of Brand New's greatest songs. I believe the whole '1234567' deal is every number represents how many years the girl lived so jesse felt he could sing that line 7 times to emphasize how little the number is and how many short years she lived. | I really belive this song is about 'praticing what you preach' and standing up for what you belive in, even tough you may be a walking contradiction. I think Jesse is saying indirectly that believers of God and people who preach the bible tend to be hyprocrites, because they try and advocate the difference between what's right and what's wrong when they don't really know the difference themselves. I think Jesse is also trying to imply that people who believe in God are doing so becasue they think it's the right thing to do, not because they actaully want to or try to be a good person. In hell yes he says that he doesnt believe in one becuase 'he' is never there for him, and i think this song describes the same thing in a different way. He's describing the stuggles in his life as getting beat up and with that, there is nothing for him to confide into or anything to be there for him besides friends. "It's for the better in the bitter end I guess you'd know the best" that line is basically what sold it to me, like people are always saying "life works out in the end, god works in mysterious ways..blah blah blah" and hes just talking about how hes waiting for that better end to come. |

I really think this song is about headstrong teenage years. Epically when it's like 'Cut your finger on the edge 'cause it's sharper than they told you' implying that you don't listen to what people say when they try to warn you.. and 'Take a leap from out the window cause it's way too far to go through the door ' just implies someone rebellious..maybe. then there's the whole "concrete and water, shes looking for her daughter at midnight in torrential downpour" that sounds like a mother whose really worried to look at her at a late hour in the pouring rain thinking shes up to 'no good'. It's obviously about rape and torment and obsession but I think, that the guy doing the rape is interpreting the muffled cries and vocal struggles as "i love you" because he doesn't want to think that the girl he loves, doesnt love her back. So he's in denial. But Matt Skiba skateboards and skateboarders usually don't like cops becuase cops tell them to stop whereever theyre skateboarding. I love this song. This was the first Cursive song I have ever heard. In my opinion on this song, I think it's about a little girl who is getting emotional support from..maybe a brother or a father, or her mother? The girl kinda seems to young for a boyfirend to help her out but anyways.. I think this girl is having problems with her self confidence, hence the whole "we love you just the way you are..." thing. And this part "I don't want to be seen as a pretty thing, cause it's the pretty things that are alwys breaking." I think the person who is helping her deal with her emotiions is saying this, to give her some advice that she might understand. When they said "Oh pretty youre so naive, but it comes off so cute..we dont want to fix you" Ovbisouny shes naive because she doesnt know much about herslef in order to gain confidence, and they dont want to fix her becasue she'll learn from it later in life. It took me a little bit to figure out what "the nighten gale locked in a chage, wont you sing for me? wont you sing for me uh huh" meant but I think I get it. This girl is dealing with her fraction of depression, and the person who is helping her is telling her to ( in 'nightengale' terms) sing for him/her. Or telling her to do something that she loves to get over her doubts. Then during the end of the song, the girl says that she wants to be 'fixed' or 'helped', but then the person helping her is saying "just sleep on this and you may fell better in the morning..i am strong because I have gotten you though all of this, and you are weak becasue you are so young.. and then he/she is like "wait u are stong and i am weak" and then realizes taht he/she feels bad for not handeling the situation better...i think!
