Jefferson Airplane – Twilight Double Leader Lyrics 5 years ago
but then . . .

In Surrealistic Pillow's liner-notes
discussion of the process of writing
"3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds",
Marty Balin is quoted as having included
interesting word combinations
found in commercial publications such as newspapers.

and "Double Leaders" are used in game-fishing-
it's a style of rigging (ie knotting) lures

so, a "Double Leader" is also both
a euphonious and
a previously extant term

Jefferson Airplane – Twilight Double Leader Lyrics 5 years ago
Double Leader...?
Airplane was into 'Jeffersonian' ideals: Liberty, revolution. Varieties of political and esoteric suggestions eventually turned up in many Paul Kantner songs.

"Twilight" refers to a time without the light of Sun or Moon- when our vision is uniquely gentle, and the Earth itself seems luminous.

Contrasting this,
'Double Leader' likely refers to a Jungian or Confucian ideal of esoteric marriage, the monarchy of King and Queen- ie, a balance of elements!

No wonder this song is so powerful.

"Get down now,& Roll around me, be my queen" suggests possibilities of dynamic play within the royal marriage (or more specifically 'rolling': American blues slang for intercourse)

some of the remaining lyrics offer a counterpoint familiar to Airplane fans:
First we hear a reference to ancient colors or events- then a reference to change, a vast sense of time eroding previous empires. Hints of a similar politically-oriented contrasts appear in many of Airplane's earlier songs, particularly "When the Earth Moves Again"

There's nothing "better" than GONG. It's music.

Gong – Oily Way Lyrics 16 years ago
Prog? this isnt "Prog"! "Prog" is sleepy wanky Bill Bruford albums. This is psychedelia, maximized. It's a powerful cartoon of the mind, without the time_&_investment of scoring good drugs. Plus this trip lasts 40 years.
Mostly tho I can respect a comment that dont address the question. Me, I'm literal:

So what is the "Oily Way"?
Tis a pun.
A pun on 1st, "The ONLY Way", the "spiritual dogma" which was chief selling point Xtianity made for many paranoiacs over 2000 years, and led to countless wars/deaths...
AND a pun on "The Oyly Well" a natural "healing" site in Britain [http://www.antipope.org/feorag/wells/oyly-well.html]
AND similarly, it's a referenece to an extract of Cannabis known as "Hash Oil";
Lastly but not least significantly there is the 100-year-old humorous theatre tradition known as the "D'Oyly" theatre.

And it's one of the psychedelic band "Gong'"s brilliant, nursery rhyme-like jazz rock anthems, the closest thing they ever got to a "hit single".
It's A TRIP!
love, leo

Yes – Astral Traveller Lyrics 18 years ago
looking over yes' early set lists [now online],
this song was once a yes power hitter.
after they dropped "looking around" [their first set-opener]
they opened with 'astral traveller" for months -
apparanty it was played in the usa before YES ALBUM was finished
after which they dropped it.
I've seen at least 3 versions of the 'astral traveller" lyrics, including
one from a '70's-era official lead-sheet song book which begins :

"And in the ruins around the noose ..."

greatness!

Yes – Love Will Find a Way Lyrics 19 years ago
i think this song is about a GUY who thinks that love is gonna like show him some "way"-
instead of just like, accepting what IS and what IS is not just all of our anticipations and trips, you know.
I think the guy in this song should like let go of this whole thing and find another woman to project onto this whole need to have thing a certain WAY.

Yes – Turn of the Century Lyrics 19 years ago
"Turn of the Century", 1978:
Jon A. has spoken of becoming a friend of the painter
(sometimes sculptor...) Marc Chagall in Paris in 1970-something, around the time when Anderson became known as an amateur painter.

Anderson has also told another story which is not strictly historical:
When the Chagalls moved from Russia to Europe and Marc became the incredibly famous painter (this would be around1920), Chagall's perhaps less adaptive wife was absolutely unsuited and not prepared.
Deprived of Marc's masculine strengths due to the world's demands on his incredible talent, and feeling so lost in a new environment, "she died" as the song says.
Anderson might have said "she killed herself", but that's so dramatic.
(anyway Bella died in 1954, a very long time to spend dying).
Anyway Chagall himself died in 1985 and since then
Anderson has hinted this tale is an element
in this particular song...
and the parallels are abundant, but the story itself, &
what a story - is not strictly true.
The song though.... is one of their more direct lyrics -and the guitar pyrotechnics make it holy and sublime.

Yes – Big Generator Lyrics 19 years ago
the previous YES project,
the DVD "9012 LIVE" [ca. 1985/6?]
ends with the line
"...like the music of BIG GENERATORS."
this concert-movie-vid was
directed by a then unknown Paul Verhoeven,
who used a 'sampling' technique' of intercutting
other older, B/W film into starkly modern YES
footage.
Funny but Verhoeven went on to also direct
the blockbuster film of Comander R.Heinlein's
"starship troopers"....

Yes – A Venture Lyrics 19 years ago
along with some ideas on 'sharing' and 'story'
i feel stong messages about companionship -
jolly times (alone is no ...) with the magic of a drink,
but even a current of
quieter times exploring communication with other species
".... with a handclap or a whisper".
