Wow, Hey mmms2009, thank you. It's been a few years now and well, our relationship ended but it really was for the better. I know this is not that place to just shoot the breeze but I just wanted to say thanks for the prayers. I found someone now who, as my mother puts it "touches my heart" and yes she really does. Unfortunately, once again this song is another one of those road to recovery songs. This time it has a meaning in terms of Self recovery. Which I guess Gary Allan's song "Learning to Live with Me" would be fitting. |

Really, are you that ignorant? Do you really think musicians put all their effort into writing songs about drug addiction? So Dave Gahan had a drug problem I guess that means all his songs are written about drugs? Get a freaking life people, seriously. I think the song makes pretty clear what Depeche Mode is trying to say. And I'm pretty sure it isn't about drugs. "Vows are spoken to be broken". Okay kids, so lets get the facts straight. This is after all songmeanings.com. So I went to inxs.com/switch and found the meaning behind this song which, yes, was written by Andrew Farriss. Andrew states that the song wasn't directly written for Michael or for anyone in general. It "deals quite generically with the sense of loss." If you want to read the rest go to the website and have a look for yourself. I am actually quite glad that the song wasn't written intentionally for Michael as now we can all have our own meaning to this song. |

I realise this song is in reference to Angela Herzberg (Gary's Wife) who sadly commited suicide in 2004. Requiescat in pace. To me this song has a different meaning. My girlfriend and I have made a very difficult choice in our life. I will not disclose exactly what that is but it has been a very difficult choice to make and it will affect us the rest of our lives. It may even destroy our relationship. Anyhow, this is my road to recovery song and believe me, I really do feel like, I just got back from Hell. |

Wow, maybe it's too late to comment on Reality's post. Maybe the kid checked out already. No matter, this site is about song meanings not some teeny bopper who thinks drugs are cool. Well, this is one song that just states the obvious. It indeed sounds like Maynard's singing about heroin addiction. I try to keep an open mind when reading and understanding Tool lyrics because I don't think Maynard's songs are all about drug addiction. Being that he isn't an addict or avid user. Of course that doesn't mean he can't write about it. To me, a lot of his songs have to do with relationships whether it's just the beginning of one, being in the middle of one or ending one. But that's just the Tool side of it. I'm pretty new to A Perfect Cirlce so I'm still trying to sort out what APC's is all about. |

| Why does it ALWAYS have to do with religion? Do you really think Maynard is that caught up in being anit-religious that every song he writes is about religion? First of all, in my opinion, Most of Lateralus seems to be written about someone Maynard had a falling out with, (i.e. break up) maybe a WOMAN (don't freak out) and secondly it is stated that 10,000 days contains several songs written about Maynard's mother. To me, this song yeah, is about someone who did something terribly wrong to someone else or killed someone, sought help (i.e. therapy, jail time, found Jeezy Creezy, etc.) and basically tried to leave it in the past. Those who were close or had some sort of relavance to the victim all want to know how this person intends on making amends to those he/she hurt. I guess it really depends on how you look at it. If you're that caught up in being anti-religous then it may make sense to you in that way (it seems a lot of you are) but if you stop digging so deep for the actual meaning of the song you might see it in a different way. Okay, so tell me if my situation has any relation to this song. At this point a girl I was seeing is quite mad at me for something that I did wrong. No, I did not cheat on her but basically just made her out to be the bad guy. Thus she has not talked to me in almost a week. I'm pretty upset by the whole situation. I know I screwed up and only wish to explain myself and apologize for what happened. She's not spoken to me in almost a week, I hope to one day speak to her again yet, I also get the feeling that she will not allow that to happen. My feelings are to stick it out and hope that I will be able to reconcile my wrong doings but at the same time I also feel that she'll not allow me that so I should just "walk away". Tell me that my situation has no relation to this song. My point is that Maynard and I had a very similar situation. Great song to listen to in my situation. |

Reconciliation sums up the entire album (to me). It may just be the situation I'm in but it almost sounds like something went bad between Maynard and someone really close to him and instead of just giving up and walking away, he's going to wait it out. He feels if he waits something good may still come out of it but he's also tired of holding on and wants to move on. I almost feel as though I'm living the experience. Again, I'm in a similar situation, of course I was also born 17 April too (same day as Maynard). It's an astrology thing. You wouldn't understand. |

I think what he's saying is basically saying anything to me but say something. Talk to me don't leave me in silence. "Cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion". To me it's like the whole album in about reconciliation between Maynard and someone really close to him who for whatever reason left him. He wants to fix whatever it was that went wrong. |

This song by no means has anything to do with religion. I don't how anyone sees that in the lyrics. Clearly Maynard is talking about a relationship thats falling apart due to lack of communication and unless they "grow and strengthen our communication" the relationship will come to an end. It's quite simple. Stop over anylizing the lyrics and see them for what they are. |

I could be wrong but I was told by a friend (he could be wrong) that most of Lateralus has to do with one of Maynard's girlfriends. I can see where that might come into play with the song Lateralus and even with Parabol/a. I agree that the song has something to do with sex and not just meaningless, casual sex. More like meaningful sex with someone he cares a lot about. "So familiar and overwhelmingly warm This one, this form (this body) I hold now" "We barely remember what came before this precious moment" Like nothing before "this precious moment" matters except for what's happening right now. "This body makes me feel eternal" Like that feeling you get when your in love with someone. You feel like you can do or be anything. I don't think numbers played any factor in Parabol or Parabola. |

As I see it "watch the temple topple over" is in reference to the relationship built between two people and then being toppled over by pointing the finger, blaming the other. On that note, it's a good song to listen to when your are so pissed off that you can't see straight. |
