I don't know if I'm just bitter about the idea of marriage, but from the first time I heard this, my interpretation seemed so clear in my head, I'm surprised no one's addressed it head on. The narrator is the woman's ex-lover. That didn't work out; she "chose the yard to burn, but the ground remembers her." She ended her relationship with him, but he remembers her. And now she's unhappy with her marraige, unsatisfied with her idealistic domestic life. She thought this was the life she wanted for herself; her hands "rolling around the shaded ferns" earlier in life, with her ex-lover, set a pattern. Plants- the ferns and the bouganvillea- are symbols for her domesticity. It's what she wanted when she was young, with her ex. It's what she worked on when her children were around. But later in life, her jar of bouganvilea seeds are misplaced, meaning she's found it is not as fulfilling a life as she always thought it would be. Another obvious clue to her dissatisfaction is her lost wedding ring- some of you thought that meant she was a widow. I took that to mean her marriage has lost the romance, the spark, and even the commitment. Which is why she sits by the window and thinks of her ex-lover, ponders on how her life could have been with him. The last few lines refer to her current husband and her: "But she'll mend his tattered clothes And they'll kiss as if they know A baby sleeps in all our bones, so scared to be alone" They go on as normal, though there's nothing there. She's not conscious of the reason why she does this- but it's because a baby sleeps in all her bones, so scared to be alone. |

I heard this song for the first time this morning, and I'm suddenly obsessed with it. It's changing my life! haha. She's singing to a person feeling so lost, lonely, and disenchanted with the world because of the pain it's caused them. She's trying to make this person understand that they are one with the world, everything they feel or come in contact with through their soul or their senses- including the things they've lost. There's no sense in running from something that is a part of you, cause it's the same world that has brought you down as the one that's gonna pick you up. |

| Vienna Teng – Cannonball Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Damien Rice really does do a better job with this; the guitar and the rawness of his voice gets the point of the song across better. Vienna's is too polished and pristine to make it sound tender, or fragile. But its still beautiful. I'm a fan. | |

really? Wow, two hundred respect points to her. She's genius, this song is beautiful, and the lyrics are incredible. The last verse, with the instrument analogy, is so clever and touching. I love it. |

| Belle & Sebastian – We Rule the School Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I think by "You know the world was made for men" he meant that the world is made for tough, dominant, often artless people who focus on the practical side of life. Those are they who get the most power and attention in the world. They often don't care for or appreciate the tiny yet beautiful things in life- such as pirouettes on ice, or graffiti on a beech tree. Love this song. |

Holy fotch. Ben and Conor are two of my favorite song writers/singers of all time. To find them together was simply a miracle. haha. And the best part was that it was a surprise. I was just listening to Jenny, trying her out, and then I was all, "Woah, that's my Ben right there!" |

| Stars – Calendar Girl Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
It's about a girl who is suddenly realizing how limited her living days are, (maybe she does have a disease, like some of you said), and there are so many things she wants to do but time's running out. The friend on the porch is someone from her life with her old perspective, but the friend doesn't mean as much to her anymore. She also realizes life is too short to wait for people to do what you want. |

"On a side note, does anyone else hear how angry Greta sounds when she sings this?? That confuses me, and is one of the few reasons I half-agree with GuiltyxGirl." She's infuriated about the unfairness of the situation. |

The chorus could fit with plenty of situations, but I think if you take the song as a whole, it fits best with the literal meaning: family. He's talking to at least two people, brother and sister. Since it's more than one, we know it's not a lover. I think it's about family. =) |

Ridgeback basically said what I was thinking, but phrased it much better than I could have. I agree completely. =) Beautiful song, one of my favorites of all time. The fact that it only has six comments is shocking, but I'm definitely okay with that. I hate it when too many people like my music. haha. |

| The music in this song definitely has a Billy Joel-vibe. Did anyone else get that? | |
| The Weepies – World Spins Madly On Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Now that we're all in the mood to share the details of our depressing love lives, I'd like to say that I'm quite upset second trimester ended today, because I no longer have classes with the guy I like. But the world spins madly on, right? This song is incredible. Each note in the melody is fitted so perfectly with the mood that each word brings. I love it. This song is |

| Tristan Prettyman – The Kiss Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I love this song. Her voice is so breezy, it's beautiful. Anyway, this song is about wanting to be in a relationship for the thrill and for the sake of being in a relationship, which is different than how she is now. But she's not in love with anything more than having someone to kiss and to miss. |

| The Hush Sound – Out Through The Curtain Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I agree, this song is about regret. More specifically, I think it's about not taking advantage of the opportunities that come, and later feeling awful about it. "Salt tasting tears They roll off of my lips One for each day I'm inside this house It's a trap One I can't quite escape so pretend it's the place that I love" I love that line; I can relate to it so well. To me, it means he is unhappy about certain circumstances in his life, but he's too scared or lazy or sad to do anything about it. So he pretends that where he is is where he wants to be. |
