| In Flames – Man Made God Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I dunno lads... of coarse we only have three words to interpret on, but listen to the music from the point of view of a man, who has realised his own powers. his power to create, to destroy. his power to decide whats right, whats wrong, the power to understand, to help, and all the responsibilities of these powers, which every man has. The individual is the closest thing on earth to a god. this ordinary person has realised this, and so is aware of his powers. he is now a man made into a god. that's the vibe i get from the music. a sense of self worth, empowerment, with all the compassion of a human. and after the first riff, the fast paced part, sounds like the struggles every man must go through in life, it then breaks out into another empowering riff, and the second time an accoustic piece which in me inspires the above mentioned feelings of self worth. I'm repeating myself now. but i love this song. Also, perhaps you could interpret it in the "morphing into Primal" way. That this man has ACTUALLY BECOME GOD! it's unlikely, and it's not how i chose to interpret it, but it would make sense. The power expressed in the music are his new god like abilities, and the music also carries the compassion of a human, which this man hasn't shaken off. GODMAN! (that was a conclusion i came to when i was drunk. I titled myself Godman and later made the association) |

Over the summer things had gone very shoddy within a group of friends of mine. rumours set out with intent to damage peoples reputation or other lies made up for what seems now to have been nothing more than a way to pass time. These spread from twisting words to extremely harsh lies of which i'm not going to burden you with. it was totally and purely ignorant. People spreading lies and worse still the poeple buying into them. There was no real evidence of any such lies holding any truth. people seemingly chose to believe them just for the sake of having someone to dislike. i my other comments are usually deeper and more profound than this but i think it's worth mentioning. when i was with one of my friends, someone who was well tapped with what was going on, as we were talking about it, he just said (bear in mind he has never heard this song) "It's fucking sick! I hate it! Their fucking Leaches" and it clicked with me that this song fitted the situation perfectly. I'm not implying that in flames wrote this song about the group mentallity of teenagers in relatively small villages in Ireland, I just wanted to show my amazement at how versatile some of their lyrics are. |

| by the way, Sahaal, if the flame is a good thing then why does he seem to demand that it "burn out"? | |

Nimbus i liked alot of what you were saying up until you got to the second verse. two things i think you should all take note of. 1. Any time anyone (including nimbus) interpretted a past relationship with a person, it would make just as much sense for that to be an addiction, as bsmith102 suggested. because it's vague enough it can be interpretted as either. 2. this, like almost every other song on the album has an underlying theme of escape. in this case, escaping from the past. What i think is the greatest part of this poem, lyrically are the first two lines of the third verse "Another dawn collapses Do i need to be reminded?" now anyone who has tried to overcome an addiction or close personal relationship or tried to change something big about themselves can see these lines making perfect sense if they just reflect. The promise that you won't look to your sweet shadow could hold up for a day, maybe, but there's always the mourning when you wake up the morning after you broke the promise to yourself and you know that it's already fallen apart for you. the romantic idea of the "Dawn of a New Day" that you convinved yourself of has been lost. and you wish you weren't reminded. you wish you don't remember. but the following lines are representative of the knowledge of what needs to be done to reach your "safe home". |

| In Flames – Goliaths Disarm Their Davids Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Well in the bible Goliath was a big evil giant, and david was a small man with a slingshot. David, with help from god won the great fight between the two. Very inspirational really. The small overcoming the great. I beg to differ with everyones interpretation so far. the music of this song is too glorious and uplifting for the goliaths, who are doing the disarming to be the bad guy. and as for the lyrics: In Flames, in this modern metaphysical piece invert the attention. I think that it is unquestionable that this song tackles religion. firstly, it's implied by the title. Goliaths disarm their davids. Secondly, the very first line seems to critisize the work religion does in a society thirdly, the protagonist of this poem is collecting the words of Fallen Goliathsin his quest to Disarm "this psychotic chaos". WHY? Well, the beauty of David vs. Goliath is howsomeone so small can challenge something so big. But in reflection, what is bigger? The Desciple of God, or the opposer of religion? In this piece, Goliath is romanticised. or the goliaths. the giants, who the protagonist gathers his information, or code, from. the giant is suitable as an image. this song romanticises the strong individuals in their struggle against the weaker masses, who are under davids "bible arm", his catapult, that "spins it's downward spiral." "The Code" is the information, gathered from the atheists struck down by the masses ("the graves of giants") and the protagonist is searching for informatin sufficient enough to take away the persuasive power the religious authorities have that leads to the problems brought up in the first verse. Another thing which convinces me that the singer is on goliaths side is the last line of that verse. "Strong objects track my body, My body down" david killed goliath with a catapult. goliath (i think) was unarmed.so if the posotive character(s) of the poem are the Davids, then this poem is writen from the point of view of The negative character(s), Goliath, which is completely inconsistant with the rest of the song. by the way, i hope that i've made everyone who thought that the goliaths were the bad guys in this song feel really stupid now, or else that their able to back their points up with sufficient refrence to the song. i had to through that in their. i just couldn't help highlight that i'm disarming the other interpretations. |

The arrogance bores me. those who claim (rightly) that the lyrics were taken straight from the book continue to be ignored. so to those who know the correct lyrics, i address my own interpretation. There are hardships in anders life. "the black hole" this is forever his. he regognises it, but it doesn't mean he's bellow it. The song Dial-595-escape and this song are, i believe, directly interlinked. the surroundings are preasuring him but unlike in D595E, he doesn't hide. he starts by challenging it within himself "Should i feel shame for the questions that i have?" it's also worth noting that in both songs, the motivation he desires, needs, is the fear. unlike D595E, he wants to be pushed out. he wants it to be difficult. so the end reward will be more meaningful. And this time he has a guiding light. someone or something that could be the things he need. Instead of hiding from the problems he states that he will suffer to aquire the way out. Willingly. "I'd crawl through knives" He wishes to still emotions in the one he needs. to animate him or her. "let the colour persuade the hate that you fear" once again he asks for it to be difficult when he says "leave me in doubt" why? because he "need(s) some motivation" So far he's expressed a desire to be pushed out. He's requested negative feelings so he can be motivated. These are the knives. a willingness to suffer great pain for someone who can provide the things he needs. after being pushed out, alone to question what he doubts, he can find a way to get the things he needs. to reach heaven. i don't see this as christian symbolism. he uses heaven to express the glory of the success of inner peace and clarity he fights for. The scene is set up for him. with the motivation and the need it is all in his hands. he uses pathetic fallasy in the sky. "so bright, it's burning" everything is ready for him to decide weather it all goes right or wrong. It's in his hands. His existance in the physical sense is bound down and subdued (nailed to the floor, an image like the crucifixion, maybe to make a comparison with jesus) as his emotions drift (in the jesus comparison, the spirit rising to decide the faith of christianity) to touch the new world he is designing for himself. to summarise what i think of this song, the never easy path to self resurection, control and happiness. |
