Just to reiterate what numerous others have said, it is most definitely "Slint way." As someone already explained the reference but people still seem to think that their version (see: wrong) of the lyrics is still the correct one, i must interject. I saw Pinback at the Touch and Go 25 Anniversary show in Chicago and before they played this song, Zach mentioned that this song's ending was dedicated to his favorite band on the label who weren't playing that weekend. He never said "Slint," but I think I can safely say he wasn't talking about any bands named "Slant" or "Slender." The show was unbelievable by the way... |

This is my favorite song of all time. I've never listened to a song more times in a row and never gotten the least bit sick of it. If it weren't so depressing, i'd dance with my bride to it for our first song at the reception. It's quintessential S.M., the most beautiful, heart-leaping music w/ melody, mixed with the most tear-envoking, depressing tale of woe this side of Poe. I'll always wish for that morbid-ass bride... |

I love Magnetic Fields/anything S.M. does, but i truly hate this song. Sorry, but it makes me wanna wretch. Reminds me of "Lesbian Seagull" from Beavis and Butthead. Sorry, but I was a fourteen-year-old boy when that show was on...fartknocker. |

| The Fall – The Classical Lyrics

My favorite comes from an interview I read w/ Pavement saying how they covered this live and S.M. apparently ended the song stating, "He hates us...he hates us." Very funny. It is also funny how much shit Pavement receives for being Fall sound alikes and how much more popular they are than The Fall. I love them both, just saying. (There are two Pavement comments out of four for this song).
Brilliant tune...I agree that this band is criminally over(under?)looked in the grand scheme of indie/post-punk fandom of all ages. Mark E. Smith deserves a medal for his dedication and excellence in a field with never was' and never will be's. I can't believe how many so-called punk/indie/post-punk fans i talk to that have no idea who The Fall are. They are the scene, they are no scene, they have no scene.
'Conduit for Sale' indeed. |

Let me preface my irate ranting by saying...I'm drunk.
I really like this site, but i sometimes cringe at what people post. Chopstix, i appreciate your thoughts that this song alludes to "The Oddysey," but please, learn how to spell 'Odysseus' before blowing my mind. Not to mention, *loose quote* "this song is about opium not heroin...blah...blah...blah...," jesus, please rail me with semantics, heroin is derived from opium, same thing...lay off!!! Yea, i'm underestimating the quality of this ode to smack. Also, sidenote, "Loose" is an ode to Iggy Pop's love of dance.
People, get a grip, use a dictionary and use your brain. If a known smackhead is writing a song with terms like "spoon," "smack," "brown," "heroin" (Paging Mr. Reed??), "needle," or any other obvious terms, it's about heroin. Don't kid yourself, musicians aren't always brilliant artists, they're drug addicts.
I look forward to your spelling corrections and angry rants.
Cheers!! |

| Casiotone for the Painfully Alone – I Love Creedence Lyrics

I've enjoyed the male/female debate on here, but I myself was first drawn in by the song through his clever play on words. While the Creedence Clearwater Wright/Revival part is obvious, Elodie's name is also a play on a song by CCR,
"Lodi (Low-Die)" or L-O-D-I. Those two lines really made me listen to this song (about 100 times) and the rest of the album. It's like Magnetic Fields meets Beat Happening (the girl's singing/lo-fi) with the Tom Waits-y song for good measure (number 11). Good stuff. |
