I think that the spoon is for when people get really old and weak and can't feed themselves, and that's why that one person has it, and the book is because they're bored being with a dying person that doesn't even want them there (one he sent away). I think that he is "sorry and resigned" because his realizes his life was a waste and he could have had "a brilliant career" |

I think "i got nothing to do today but smile" is meant to convey his loneliness in a kind of sarcastic(?) way.
I've performed this song a few times and nobody knows it, not even some big Paul Simon/ Garfunkel fans. It's kind of a forgotten beauty, until Garden State that is. =] |

I think that in the line "I don't think that you are" think should be replaced by beleive.
This song always represents a time in my life when I was really in love with a guy but I always saw him acting the same way around other girls that he acted around me. I was "momentarily proud" I guess when I was with him but then everything just came crashing down, making me really sad. I won't go too into it for the sake of boring people, but that's what I always think of when I hear this song. |
