Could almost be a theme song for Alcoholics Anonymous or any other 12 Step Program. "I know a sickness so ancient and cross No crucifix could ever fix enough" -Obviously about addiction. "In the basement of a church, these people, they talk There is a line That must be walked" -Most AA meetings are held in churches or other large gathering places, especially in big cities. Ryan is known to attend meetings in NYC. "But if the honey makes you sick" -Drugs/Alcohol is the "honey" that makes you sick either physically or mentally In all the song sounds like a conversation between Ryan and his sponsor. Brilliant. |

| From what I remember this song was meant to be the last song on Heartbreaker which would have closed out the "chapter" on his relationship with Ms. Lombardi (who worked for his record label at the time - Bloodshot Records - based in Chicago). "New York New York" picked up on a new relationship which ended with "Goodnight Hollywood Blvd." - a reference to his time in LA dating a certain actress known for dating musicians. | |

| I believe this song is about something that's talked about very rarely...Physical abuse by a wife, g/f, significant other on a man. It seems like it's trying to say that this is the attitude that society takes towards this subject...that a relationship in which the woman is the abuser is "ok" because we never hear about it for whatever reason. Just my two cents. And I look forward to seeing Tweedy play tonight. | |
