James Taylor – You Can Close Your Eyes Lyrics 14 years ago
Although I have no idea what JT was thinking about when he wrote this song, to me it is a lullaby from a parent to a child. The parent is putting the child to sleep and telling him/her it's ok to close her eyes, as many children are afraid of the dark or being alone. At the same time, it is the parent creating a memory for the child, and assuring her that even after the parent has passed on - many years from now - that it is ok for the child to close her eyes and sleep, and be comforted by the memory of the parent's love. Luckily, there are sure to be many days between now and then that the parent and child can enjoy together.

Of course I am biased because my mom use to sing it to me when she put me to sleep, and I can't hear it without thinking of her!

Ben Folds – Not The Same Lyrics 19 years ago
The kid tripped on acid, climbed a tree and had a life changing experience - he calls it jesus because thats a pretty good cover story, right? (Parents dont get upset when their kid tells them they are going to learn about jesus.) When all his friends wanna go on the same amazing trip he tells them to take acid and climb up something high. The people dropping like flies are all the kids that try to climb something and fall off - and thats why the kid dies on the water slide because he climbed too high and fell off....

Embrace (UK) – That's All Changed Forever Lyrics 19 years ago
I love how so many song on this album incorporate the title (the good will out) - its definitely the theme throughout. No matter what goes wrong, breakups, letdown, something good will come out of it. This song, Retread, the good will out all mention it. Its masterful how the same idea can be illustrated with so many different songs.

Embrace (UK) – Higher Sights Lyrics 19 years ago
Mountains like me and you don't hear the rules
About what we can or we can't do

...thats the best line. Its about two very strong stubborn people who have huge dreams and believe that anything is possible - theyll always set their sights high.
Also, he knows that their personalities clash and their relationship is often wrong, but they inspire each other to reach farther and do great things.

I love that they use the band name in the song. You can almost see them sitting around and laughing about how they planned to do it.

Superdrag – What If You Don't Fly Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a great song because its a topic you never hear people singing about. Its philosophical in that it asks questions about the existance of God, and the authenticity of the Bible. The girl is in the mindset that sex is evil and that she should ignore her urges. Hes asking her how shell feel at the end of her life after shes been denying herself pleasure for so long, and then it turns out theres no such thing as heaven and shes just wasted all her time on earth.
He knows that she wants to sleep with him and wants to enjoy herself: "cuz when I blew all the elation wasn't mine" is talking about them messing around (it aint a sin if it dont go in) and he could tell she was enjoying herself as much as he was.

Superdrag – Nothing Good Is Real Lyrics 19 years ago
This is only one of the greatest songs ever. This guy wants a date a girl but he knows hes not mature enough to handle it and hes at a bad place in his life so hes encouraging her to stay away. He says hes obsessive, overly possessive, hes selfish, he smokes too much, he ruins relationships by suddenly turning very cold and not giving the other person any reason or any closure. BUT then after hes convinced her to stay away, he changes his mind and tries to convince her that he would love her if shed give him a chance. The reason he thinks nothing good is real is because hes screwed up in the head.
This song is such an honest take on how bad at relationships so many people can be.

The Promise Ring – Scenes from France Lyrics 19 years ago
Im not sure if this song is suppose to make sense. I think the singer is traveling (in France?) and he keeps waking up in his strange hotel bed, and then falling back into sleep and having dreams. Theres the dream that hes a magicians assistant and hes in the box where the assistant gets cut in half and then put back together. Theres the dream that hes gone back in time and hes dueling someone, etc

Its one of the first PR songs i heard; i love the emotion in his voice

The Promise Ring – Living Around Lyrics 19 years ago
continued....."living around" is a smart phrase to use in this song. It sounds like "laying around" but he wants to emphasize that basically all he is doing is what is necessary to live (ie breathing, sleeping, maybe eating) and nothing more because whats the point?

The Promise Ring – Living Around Lyrics 19 years ago
Ive often wondered if the bomb is a good thing or a bad thing.
On one hand, dropping a bomb on an already bad day would only make things that much worse. On the other hand, dropping a bomb on a bad day would be, in a sense, destroying the bad and thus making everything better. hmm..

I feel like this song is after a breakup. Hes had to move out of her place and find a new place to live; he still has a lot of her things and he obsesses over them because its all he has left of her. Once she left his life, it was the "end of the world" and now hes just "living around"

The Promise Ring – Things Just Getting Good Lyrics 19 years ago
This song references Frank Sinatra's September Song:

Oh, it's a long, long while from May to December
But the days grow short when you reach September
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
One hasn't got time for the waiting game
Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November
And these few precious days I'll spend with you
These precious days I'll spend with you

which talks about how important it is to find one special person to spend the best parts of your life with.

In this song, the singer starts off talking about the future - the end of his life - and how he will have to handle everything coming to an end. But for now hes following the weather - similar to the seasons that sinatra talks about - which means chapters in ones life.
The most important part of the song though that i think is easily overlooked is how he wants to start a life long loving relationship with a girl. "were a working title for a really long book" is his way of saying their romance will be epic and long lasting and amazing enough to write a novel about.
"when i noticed you watching, well, my hands just shook" is my favorite line. Its him being nervous around her because he has a crush on her. Hes having a hard time getting his courage up to talk to her, but he knows "if it came too easy it wouldnt be worth all the time that it took." That is a similar theme to the Sinatra song which talks about girls that sinatra dates for fun but doesnt really care about:

But if you could examine the goods they bring
They have little to offer but the songs they sing
And the plentiful waste of time of day

His true love, as well as the true love in this song, is a girl whos worth putting time into getting to know her.

The Promise Ring – Get On The Floor Lyrics 19 years ago
Im thinking this song is about drugs. Hes talking about how he feels paranoid, and freaks out, and how both of them are wrecked; he also mentions how being a singer isnt the best life to lead. Maybe he wouldnt be caught up in all the destructive stuff if wasnt a musician, but for now he "feels alright".

Jimmy Eat World – Table For Glasses Lyrics 19 years ago
One of the greatest songs ever, no doubt. Ok this is what I picture....

The guy lives in an apartment building and is unrequitedly in love with a girl who lives nearby. He goes out to his porch and stairs every evening to "sweep" them (he tells himelf they are dirty even though he sweeps them every night) so that he can get a better look at her and watch her (maybe through her window, maybe sitting out on her porch.) Eventually they strike up a conversation and she sits on his porch for a while talking. When she says shes gonna go home he asks her to stay. "where do you intend to go in your dirty dress" is also him reinforcing that he pretends that his porch is dirty and her sitting on it has gotten her dress dirty. She agrees to spend the night and its like whirlwind for him because hes been in love with her for so long.

In the morning, hes trying to figure out if what he thinks happened really happened. "Lead my skeptic sight" - he sees a figure laying in the bed beside him but he still doesnt believe its her. "To the table and the light" is also referenced in the title "table for glasses" because hes fumbling to turn on the light and put on his glasses (which are on his bedside table) so that he can be completely sure that its her.

"Not asking of me anything, saying nothing about what it means" is just his laying there and drinking in the moment, not worrying about where they will go from here or talking about how they feel about each other. He just once again leads his skeptic sight to her and watches her sleeping. Aww...

Metric – Torture Me Lyrics 19 years ago
Def. agree with Trinora. Its a guy she had an amazingly close relationship with that came to an end. She needed time alone to get over it, but it seems like once she got to a place where she could feel optimistic about life again, the guy comes back in the picture and tortures her by reminding her of all she lost and all she wants.

I think the:
Get the rope
Tie me to the bed post
Cause I can't find within myself
The happy host

part is her saying she cant be happy alone (shes not a happy host for herself) and shes asking someone, maybe herself, maybe the guy, to tie her up so she cant keep running back to him and let him torture her....Its like being tied to a bed is easy compared to the hell she goes through with him.

The second verse:
Bring me need, bring me fire
One backless strapless copper-red gown
Kitty kitty cut twine
Bring turpentine
I can't stand by
High street flat of land
I've got to bite the hand

Shes still "tied to the bed" in a sense - shes been doing her best to keep away from him til she cant stand it anymore. So shes asking him to bring her need (relationship) and fire (passion), an shes coaxing him to untie her (kitty kitty, cut twine). Bring turpentine is her asking him to bring something to doctor her wounds with, where the rope cut in to her because she was trying to get untied. "Ive got to bite the hand" is her admitting thats shes only hurting herself, but she feels compelled to do it. She cant stop asking him to torture her.

Metric – Soft Rock Star Lyrics 19 years ago
This song definitely is talking about respect for women in the music industry specifically, and other industries broadly.
"Climb the wall to make the sun rise in time But the night had already begun" is talking about our predecessors putting in lots of work to make things change, but the way music has evolved its like we are back in the dark ages where women are only seen as sex objects (think every single rap video, or britney spears)
"Now here I am, I am the one." "So hang high soft star" - now its her turn to try and do something. She wants to be above the influence, and be able to be honest in her lyrics without being completely trashy (which i think metric does extremely well!) The swine are people (esp. men) who would only listen to her music if shes nearly naked, or people who dont take lyrics and talent seriously.

"Where is my guide" - shes having a hard time figuring out to how work things out and be successful because everyone whos come before her has given into peer pressure.

"I tried lookin' up to you girls. Please correct me, but didn't you let the work slide?" - talking again to the girls who sold out. They didnt do a very good job setting the stage for more female musicians.
"Capitalize on a novelty, cheap pink spotlight" - could be anything that some female "musicians" use to get attention that doesnt have anything to do with talent or the message of the music.

"Choose the highest bidder was my answer
When they told me I was up for sale" - basically her manager or whoever tells her that sex sells, and part of her wants to just give in and say "ok, whatever makes the most money is what ill do"
The bullies (music industry people who think they can buy and sell girls based on their sex appeal) "Have always tried to buy the better girls.... But failed this time" - it may have been that way in the past but they failed to buy her b/c shes standing up for herself/her music.

I can also see the chorus being interpreted as her giving in to the industry because theyve mailed a check to her (she has been bought), but that wouldnt seem to match with other metric themes, or the verses. who knows?

Stars – Write What You Know Lyrics 19 years ago
This song definitely grows on you.
I think its kindof making fun of the typical song, and when certain phrase are sung over and over its almost like they are saying "insert any chorus/verse of any other song here."
At the beginning the writer is thinking "write something everyone can relate (what you know), make it sexy (include some sort of sexual/love reference which everyone loves), and the audience will DEFINITELY love it" no matter what the actual meaning or words are.
The pony show is any concert where bands are on display- we all know most singers/writers are on drugs. Its entertainment for the masses.
I like the end because shes saying "the ending is so sexy" in almost a mock sexy voice. Its like any song that they play at a club where everyone is out on the dance floor humping each other and whatnot.

Stars – My Radio Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song has to do with environmental issues. Stars can be pretty political sometimes, especially if you see them in concert before a big election (even though they based in canada.)

I think the Radio is both the actual radio - the music the group makes and the message they are trying to get accross, and also radio like radiation. There seem to be lots of references to things like nuclear energy, radiation, pollution, etc.

"Mornings lost in a chronic haze Breath is fast and the trains are slow" - I see a hazy morning in the city, where the air pollution has blotted out most of the skyline, and the singer is having trouble breathing.

"Words get lost in the atmosphere" - like the people who talk about global warming, their words fall on deaf ears and its just another thing floating up into the atmosphere.

Other references: Bathed in pale reactor light, Count my blessings and my thumbs (makes me think of how radiation can cause mutations and have other odd effects, hes hoping he isnt affected), Far away from the chemoware .....

The Sixteen on a summer roof part is him thinking back to his younger days, sitting on a roof with a girl when the air was fresh, and overall life was more enjoyable and beautiful. He didnt have the cares and worries he has now. The only reason climate change (All winter up her woods = sexual innuendo) would come to his mind was because he was thinking of how he wanted to have sex with the girl who was playing hard to get.

"And when I go my radio Will make a melody that lingers" I think is the jist of the song. He hopes his music makes an impact.

Stars – Don't Be Afraid to Sing Lyrics 19 years ago
Its interesting because on one hand he wants a relationship with her, but on the other hand hes afraid so he tells himself "we all end together." The twist to that, however, is that we end up together when we are dead, and our bodies are all decomposed and taken into the earth.
Its like anytime you are afraid to take a big step, you sit back and tell yourself it will all work out on its own. Sure, it might work out, but then you wont be able to appreciate it, so what was the point of it working out? ya know?

Stars – Celebration Guns Lyrics 19 years ago
Its definitely talking about guantanamo bay where prisoners from Iraq, Afganistan, etc are held by the US.

"So tomorrow there will be another number For the one who had a name" is an obvious prison reference, and highlights that people held there are not thought of as human beings, but are simply numbered.

"Desert wind" points to where the war is going on. The chorus asks what the last thing the prisoner remembers is before they are taken away. Is it the sound of their defeat? US troops celebration and laughter? Or maybe its the prioner reminiscing about the times that they were victorious, and longs to be back in the fight.

"How will you know your enemy, By their colour or your fear" is talking about racial profiling, and how the media makes us wary of certain races in order to give the enemy a face.

"One by one We can cage them in your freedom" makes me think of people getting stopped at airports, and taken to the back rooms and questioned, etc so that the rest of us can feel "free."

I dont know if the reference to 666 has anything to do with the antichrist/end times mentioned in the bible - maybe because thats what the religious right fears and is fighting against, or maybe Amy thinks we are bringing ourselves to a sort of end times because of our lack of respect for human rights.

"Ink stains my fingers, My hands grow darker everyday" seems to me like a reference to blood - because it is dark and liquid like ink. Our hands are all stained because we let our government do things unchecked. We read it in the paper and dont think anything about it.

"Goodnight, sleep light, stranger" is talking to the prisoners again - sleep light because they always have to be alert/on their guard in prison. Shes wishing a stranger goodnight because she feels for his situation
