Josh Rouse – The White Trash Period of My Life Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm fairly sure the line is -
Still in tatters from the smell of you

He sounds anything but tireless from the lyrics of the song!

Elbow – Scattered Black And Whites Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with most of what has been said above. It's about revisiting childhood memories, provoked by a smell. The scattered black and whites are photographs. The only thing I interpretted slightly differently, is crosswords. I thought he was saying cross (as in angry) words through bathroom door. I thought of this in a context of arguing with your sister or brother over the bathroom. Certainly something i can associate with, every body getting up as late as possible for school and consequently there being a bottle neck at the bathroom door. although "cross words" may sound like a negative memory in what is a positive and calm song, but i don't see it like that. I remember jokingly arguing with my sis for the bathroom every morning, and it's only makes me smile.
Anyway that's my interpretation. I'm not saying it's right, it's just what i've always heard.

James Yorkston – Saint Patrick Lyrics 18 years ago
Like all of yorkstons songs, beautiful melody, beautifully played. Lyrically, i'm never sure i know definately what they're about, but he always instills feeling with his lyrics and paints pictures of situations fantastically well.

I guess this is about someone he can't be with, and it's weighing on his mind. By the end of the song i think he has resolved to go away and live carelessy for a awhile, presuamably to get her out of his.

Hardly the most profound interpretation, i know, but it was the best i could do, although i have listened to this song non-stop for the past two weeks.

James Yorkston – Woozy with Cider Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, sorry. one of the many typos. thaks for pointing it out.

Completely agree, it is a really touching song. I find it really calming that he can be relaxed about where his life has taken him and the uncertainty of where it will go.

I also think he paints images so beautifully, I can imagine everything he describes as if i'm there, which is just wonderful. He does that so well in all his songs, particularly on this album.

Also, does anyone have a better ear for the line "for a city whose size had scared me for years right now it’s a feeble evening ???? (row) not unsimilar to a beach eveings ending..." I'm not sure it's right.

ps. Thanks for posting on this, it's the first time anyone has posted on lyrics i put up, very exciting!

Fall Out Boy – This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race Lyrics 19 years ago
okay, someone else may have have said this already, i couldn't be bothered reading the 240 odd previsous comments.

Doesn't it sound alot like he's saying "this aint a scene it's a god damn arse face"?

to be honest the song deosn't really put me up nor down, i just thought i'd share that obsevation.

Oh, I'm not sure if this is a British or American site, if American, arse is the British word for ass.

Guillemots – If The World Ends Lyrics 19 years ago
6 comments? that's slightly better but lets try 7.
I'm the opposite, i love to analyse song lyrics, not line by line on the internet, but just by listening to them and getting an overall feeling. it's great when you find a song that you can't quite figure out but still does something to you, trying to figure out why it does it by listening to it over and over. In this case it could mean a few things and probably does to different people. When they wrote it they might have just put a few phrases together that rhymed and had a similar concept and the overall tells no particular story and therefore I'm completely over analying it, but i don't really care. I love the song and i like to think I get something from the lyrics.

Guillemots – If The World Ends Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song, I get something new from it everytime i listen, and it never fails to give me goose bumps.

I don't have time to analyse all the lines but the things that spring out to me.

Firstly, the song should be sad, he's either singing about someone potentially leaving or possibly even dieing, and on top of that he's making reference to the end of the wolrd, which is hardly a cheery topic! However, I find the song incredibly uplifting. It doesn't fill me with sadness, he's not singing that world is ending he's just saying that if it does he wants to be with her, that's a pretty amazing statement to make about someone. "If it's all over then I want to be with you" wow.

Okay, some other notes, he opens with "I'd just about managed to forget you when you appeared in a dream". Why is he trying to forget her? She's not with him at the time. So has she left him? is she considering leaving him? Has she died? The lyrics don't seem to focus on any kind of regret or anger, so it's difficult to reconcile in my head that it's about a break up. Then the line "Fate is telling you not to go" suggests she hasn't acatually gone, but then is he just so upset that he can't face the fact that she has either left him or is dead? I think this last possibility is enhance by psychbains observations of the closing spoken line, "But the world didn't end. Yet, somehow..." Is he saying the world hasn't ended yet somehow you're not here?

Their's also a childish element to the song, in that he's seeing her in his dreams and she's playing with buckets of sand, has he known her since he was child, is he singing specifically about a child rather than a lover? Or is he just remembering more innocent time.

Anyway, I've run out of time. These are just some of the things the song makes me think about. I'm not saying it's what the song is actually about. I'm sure it means other things to other people, and thats cool. I'd love to hear other opinions. I find it hard to believe that such a beautiful song only has 4 comments.

Belle & Sebastian – Belle and Sebastian Lyrics 19 years ago
Stuart claims that he worte this song shortly before he met Isobel, and he used it as a line when he met her for the first time, so according to him it's not directly about him and isobel, but then he denies most songs are about her, even the ones that obviously appear to be!

Maybe it's a common chat up line he uses, "oh i just wrote a song about xxx", this one turned into a relationshipn so he had to actually go and write the song, it certainly seems to be very evocative of the early stuart and isobel stories. Who knows, what i do know is, it's a great song.
