I'll take a whole new approach to this song's meaning/s because I think something vital has been over-looked. China's gender imbalance is one of the greatest threats to their national stability since probably the protest at Tiennanmen square. Not a lot of people actual know about this whole gendercide thing, yet it happens a great deal. It may be the cause of reformation in China... but the key note is that it has been hidden from the discerned. |

I read somewhere that this song alludes to Franz Kafka's "The Castle". In this story the closer the protagonist comes to the castle the further it appears to be. Thematically this suggests that it is easy become segued the closer you get to your destination... whatever that may be. A good maxim would be: Don't slack because the job ain't done! |

Wow! Boy am I glad I went straight to page 5 after only skimming over the body of every comment so far. This song is about Chinese and Indian gendercides. Its predominant in Asian cultures to prefer a son over a daughter "She should have died when she was born", and they do! 30 million daughters are missing in China alone! It isdevastating, not only is it sadistic and cruel but it creates a slew of demographic and sociological problems for the next 60 years. These girls are either selectively aborted or killed at birth. Since the availability of sonograms around 1980 the birth ratio has risen to 120 boys for every 100 girls. This is still going on too, the lsat census of China reported something around 112:100, but they plan on having it corrected by 2010. The problem is that it is still fairly poor there and families need sons to fill gender roles of supporting the family in retirement. Women marry and move away, sons are forever accredited with taking care of the parents. The one child policy is the sole culprit for this sociological disaster, everybody wants insurance for their retirement and girls are a liability. Furthermore, girls and women have always been regarded as inferior, a son makes the family "proud"! |

Although the lyrics are quite unsupportive, in judging a book by it's cover I'd say this song corresponds to The Republic of China's gender imbalance. This theme has recurred throughout several musical lyrics over the last couple decades, a good example would be Nirvana's "Been a Son". Its a real pressing issue in society... especially there, where some 30 million females have either been selectively aborted or gendercidally slaughtered. It may be a stretch of an interpretation, but it would make sense. |

Actually... (words of the day) doesn't come to being util the age of 11, until then kids can be tought that anything is O.K.. I did say I wouldn't comment again, but this is my rebuttal. Listen to that which enlightens you musically, not lyrically. Do whatever you want, but lyrics only enhance the music, not vice-versa. Kids will do whatever, but most of the time it has to do with doing that which they feel parents and the like don't want them to do... or listen to.
Until next time, take care of yourself...and each other |

Do you want me to tear you to pieces? How do you know what every male fantasy is? No guys I know would go near that diseased troglodyte with a ten-foot can of anti-septic. What else have you comment on, I'd love to find out! How dare you criticize my arguement based on spelling and errors of the like. Never do that, because it will make you look like an idiot for not assessing the arguement, as opposed to the syntax which is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Christina deserves to die! Her songs blow, so does she. Although at least she knows that redundant, cliche, unoriginal inputs sell to dumb ass impressionable girls of low intelligence and awful sense of music. Anyone that listens to this bitch sing should get aids for being so retarded! |

THIS SONG! AHHHHHHHHH, its the epitome of everything I object to. Where do I start? Is this even worth my time? Cliche Christina, bringing the same old trivial opinions to the table. Her as a person, regardless of the meaning this song suggests, whatever that may be? She's an uneducated egotist, flouting about with appealing images and controvertial concepts. Not to mention completely contradictory! She offers opinions of equal rights, yet exploits herself awkwardly. She tells young girls to be their own person, yet selfishly directs them towrds the hearding call of the sheppard. This song means there is something wrong with our society! |

I think Sublime was/is overrated. This song in particular condones senseless violent acts. Their target audience seems to be children, children are impressionable and this song seems to appeal to a certain age of kids who don't know any better. These children look-up to this guy and their actions CAN be based on his lyrics, which condone violent behavior based on visceral opinions. These types of songs (and I promise this will be the only one I comment on) perpetuate violent acts based on primal urges. His feelings are indiscrete and savage, his death is ironic to say the least. How his talent could be misguided is a question that is easily answered. He wanted to sell albums, so he appealed to kids, gained their symapthy and made a few dollars. What bothers me the most is his flamboyant, unrestricted, unconscientious agreeability to violence that will most likely manifest itself in a complete reinactment of this scenario. Some child somewhere is now more likely going to commit a violent act because a catchy song told him to, whether its because he's attracted to the wrong "heinas", or because he just needed some reinforcement from a secondary figure to go out and do something he was already going to do. |

The line "with the writings of Kafka in hand" most likely refers to Franz Kafka's most famous piece "The Metamorphosis" in which Gregor (the protagonist) undrgoes a horrible transformation-into a bug. I think the reference is depicting the metamorphosis of a relationship, inwhich an unwanted change is happening. |
